3. -a sport played by two teams of
five players on a rectangular
court
- one of the world's most
popular and widely viewed
sports
-a team can score a field goal by
shooting i the ball through the
basket during regular play
BASKETBALL
4. HISTORY
December 1891
Canadian American Dr. James Naismith,
a physical education professor and
instructor at the International Young
Men’s Christian Association
Training School (YMCA) (today,
Springfield College) in Springfield,
Massachusetts, USA), was trying
to keep his gym class active on a
rainy day
5. Basketball was originally played with a soccer
ball
The first balls made specifically for basketball
were brown, and it was only in the late 1950s
i that Tony Hinkle, searching for a ball that
would be more visible to players and
spectators alike, introduced the orange ball
that is now in common use
Dribbling was not part of the original game
except for the "bounce pass" to teammates
6. Passing the ball was the primary means of
ball movement
Dribbling was eventually introduced but
limited by the asymmetric shape of early balls
Influenced by the children's game named
Duck on a Rock
The first official game was played in the YMCA
gymnasium in Albany, New York on January
20, 1892 with nine players
By 1897-1898 teams of five became standard.
11. THE BASKETBALL BALL
Spalding
As stated earlier, Spalding was the first company to produce a
basketball for official use. It has been producing NBA’s official
game ball since 1983.
Molten
Molten is a Japanese goods manufacturer and it is the official
provider of game balls for all FIBA world championships, FIBA
Asia events, and many domestic leagues. It has also provided
balls for Europe-wide competitions from 2006 to 2007.
Wilson
Wilson is the official ball supplier of all the National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA) postseason tournaments. It also
supplies balls for all FIBA operated 3×3 competitions as of 2003.
12. Rawlings
Rawlings has been manufacturing basketballs since 1902. It is
known for producing a ball with ten panels along with the
traditional 8-panel ball. The TEN basketball is Amateur
Athletic Union’s official ball. It is the largest 3-on-3
basketball tournament in the United States.
Nike
From 2007, Nike had a contract to produce basketballs for the
Euroleague Basketball Company. But in 2012, it was turned to
Spalding. In the Philippines, the Nike 4005 Tournament Balls
is being used in NCAA and UAAP.
THE BASKETBALL BALL
14. RIMBERIO CO
The first basketball hoop was created by James
Naismith. He created the basketball hoop in 1891 at
the YMCA training school. He worked at the YMCA
at the time where he invented the original model of
it. He created it with a broken peach basket that
was placed 10 feet in the air. The basketball hoop
has evolved by the adding of the net to get the ball
out easier, and more sturdier materials were added.
Dr. Naismith was put into the Basketball Hall of
Fame in 1959 for his creations and it was named
after him for being the creator.
15. RIMBERIO CO
This is the first basketball hoop made out of a
peach basket. As the ball there is a soccer ball.
16.
17. RIMBERIO CO
A regulation basketball court in international
games is 91.9 feet long and 49.2 feet wide. In
the NBA the court is 94 feet by 50 feet. Most
courts havewood flooring, usually
constructed from maple planks running in
the same direction as the longer court
dimension. The name and logo of the home
team is usually painted on or around the
center circle.
19. The basket is a steel rim 18 inches
diameter with an attached net i affixed
to a backboard that measures 6 feet by
3.5 feet and one basket is at each end of
the court.
The white outlined box on the
backboard is 18 inches high and 2 feet
wide.
20. At almost all levels of competition, the top of
the rim is exactly 10 feet above the court
and 4 feet inside the baseline.
While variation is possible in the dimensions
of the court and backboard, it is considered
important for the basket to be of the correct
height - a rim that is off by just a few inches
can have an adverse effect on shooting
21. Basketball jerseys are used to separate and
identify different teams and players on the
basketball court.
Basketball shoes have special features that
provide both support and cushioning to reduce
shocks and vibrations that can cause shin pain.
Knee pads will prevent conclusions or bruises to
the patella.
22. Elbow pads are protective pads worn on the
elbows to prevent or reduce elbow injuries during
a fall or collision.
Mouthguards are a buffer often used to avoid
serious injury.
23. OFFICIALS
an official is a person who has the
responsibility to enforce the rules
and maintain the order of the
game
24. a. Referee
1. Crew chief - the lead official
usually performs the jump ball
2. Umpires - a.k.a. Referees same
responsibilities with the lead official
only that they are only assistants
25. b. Scorer
The one who will record the points,
violations and fouls gained Ly each team
Uses score sheet for documentary
purposes and scoreboard
for letting the teams know
about their status in the
game
28. a. Positioning
-Although the rules do not specify any
positions whatsoever, they have evolved as
part of basketball
-During the first five decades of basketball's
evolution, one guard, two forwards, and two
centers or two guards, two forwards, and one
center were used
BASIC SKILLS
29. Power forward: plays offensively often with their back to
the basket; on defense, plays under the basket (in a zone
defense) or against the opposing power forward (in man to-
man defense).
Center: uses height and size to
score (on offense), to protect the
basket closely (on defense), or to
rebound.
BASIC SKILLS
30. b. Shooting
-the act of attempting to score points by throwing the ball
through the basket, methods varying with players and
situations
- a player faces the basket with both feet facing the
basket
-A player will rest the ball on the fingertips of the
dominant hand (the shooting arm) slightly above the
head, with the other hand supporting the side of the ball
BASIC SKILLS
31. -the ball is usually shot by jumping (though not
always) and extending the shooting arm
-the shooting arm, fully extended with the wrist
fully bent, is held stationary for a moment following
the release of the ball, known as a follow-through
- players may shoot directly into the basket or may
use the backboard to redirect the ball into the
basket
BASIC SKILLS
33. 1. Jumpshot
-a shot in basketball
made by jumping into
the air and releasing the
ball with one or both
hands at the peak of the
jump
BASIC SKILLS
34. 2. Lay-up
-A layup is a shot
near the basket, usually
off the backboard. For a
layup, you run towards
one side of the basket,
jump, and lay the ball
off the backboard into
the hoop.
BASIC SKILLS
35. 3. Slamdunk
-a scoring shot in
which a player jumps
up and forces the ball
down through the
basket.
BASIC SKILLS
36. c. Rebounding
-the objective of rebounding is to successfully gain
possession of the basketball after a missed field goal
or free throw, as it rebounds from the hoop or
backboard
-this plays a major role in the game, as most
possessions end when a team misses a shot.
BASIC SKILLS
38. 1. Offensive Rebounds
-in which the ball is
recovered by the offensive
side and does not change
possession
BASIC SKILLS
39. 2. Defensive Rebounds
- in which the
defending team gains
possession of the
loose ball
BASIC SKILLS
40. d. Passing
-a method of moving the ball
between players
- most passes are accompanied by a step
forward to increase power and are followed
through with the hands to ensure accuracy
BASIC SKILLS
42. 1. Chest Pass
-the ball is
passed directly
from the passer's
chest to the
receiver's chest.
BASIC SKILLS
43. 2. Bounce Pass
-the passer bounces
the ball crisply about
two-thirds of the way
from his own chest to the
receiver
-the ball strikes the
court and bounces up
toward the receiver.
BASIC SKILLS
44. 3. Overhead Pass
-An overhead pass in
basketball is when the
player throws the ball
with both hands starting
from behind the head
and releasing the ball
out front.
BASIC SKILLS
45. 4. Outlet Pass
-a pass made in
basketball by the player
taking a defensive
rebound to a teammate
to start a fast break.
BASIC SKILLS
46. 5. No-look Pass
-The no look pass, also
occasionally referred to as
the blind pass, features
offensive action in which a
player in possession of the
basketball throws it to a
teammate without looking
directly at that same
teammate.
BASIC SKILLS
47. 6. Behind-the-back Pass
-A behind-the-back
pass is when you wrap
the ball around your
back to throw the ball.
BASIC SKILLS
48. e. Dribbling
- the act of bouncing the ball continuously
with one hand, and is a requirement for a
player to take steps with the ball
- a player pushes the ball down towards the
ground with the fingertips rather than patting
it; this ensures greater control.
BASIC SKILLS
49. f. Blocking
- performed when, after a shot is
attempted, a defender succeeds in altering
the shot by touching the ball
BASIC SKILLS
50. Full Timeout
– When an official wishes to signal for a full
timeout it is indicated by two arms spread
to the sides forming a “T” shape.
Jump Ball
– When both players have control over the
ball at the same time, it is indicated by
both thumbs pointing upwards with arms
extended.
Referee Hand Signals
51. Blocking
– If a defensive player commits a blocking foul
the official will have both hands, in fists,
touching his hips, and his elbows in tight
against his body.
Pushing
– To signal a pushing foul, the official will have
both hands extended straight in front of him,
with his palms facing outward.
Referee Hand Signals
52. Traveling
– When a player has committed a traveling
violation, the official will signal it by placing both
of his hands in front of him and moving them in
a circle.
Double Dribble
– The official will signal a double dribble
violation has been committed by putting both of
his hands in front of him, with palms down, and
alternating them up and down, as if dribbling a
basketball.
Referee Hand Signals
53. Kicking the Ball
– When a player kicks the ball, the referee will
have one foot raised in front.
Three Point Basket Scored
– The official will extend both arms directly
upwards with fingers pointed to signify that a
player has scored a Three Point Basket.
Two Point Basket Scored
– When a two point basket is scored, the
official will extend one arm parallel to the floor
and point with two fingers.
Referee Hand Signals
54. Basket Counts
– To indicate a basket counts, when a foul has also
occurred, the referee will drop his hand from shoulder
height directly down.
Basket Does Not Count
– To “wave off” a basket, or indicate it does not count
because a foul has occurred, the referee will start with
both hands at the shoulders, elbows out, and extend
hands out directly towards the side.
Lane Violation
– If a player is shooting a free throw and a lane violation
occurs, the referee will signal it by raising one of his arms
out to his side and holding it there until the free throw is
completed.
Referee Hand Signals
56. Acknowledge all good plays whether by
your team or the other team. Treat all
players as you would like to be treated.
Do not interfere with, bully or take
advantage of another player. Cooperate
with your coach, team mates and
opponents, without them there would be
no competition.
57. COURT ETIQUETTE
Basketball courts for residents and their
guests only
Use courts at your own risk
Limit play to 1 hour if others are waiting
Proper attire and shoes must be worm
at all times
58. COURT ETIQUETTE
No eating, drinking or smoking
No skateboards, roller blades or bikes
allowed
No pets allowed
Children under the age 17 must be
accompanied by a parent or guardian
59. Remember the Golden Rule
-Always treat your teammates, coaches, opponents and
officials the way you would like to be treated. That means
respect, dignity, and sportsmanship at all times.
Be a Good Sport
-Play fair. Be a leader. Set the example. Rise above poor
behavior. Have fun.
Practice the Fundamentals
-Master the basketball basics. Practice each of the
fundamentals –dribbling, shooting, passing, rebounding and
defense.
PLAYER’S CODE OF CONDUCT
60. Listen to your Coach
-Coaches volunteer their own time to work with your team.
Don’t waste that time. If you’re on the team, your job is to listen
attentively to the coach.
Be Patient with Your Teammates
-Every player has strengths and weaknesses. Be patient with
your teammates as they improve their games. Basketball is a team
sport. Success can only come when the entire team plays well
together.
Learn the Rules
-Read the rule book. You can’t claim to “know the game” if you
don’t know the rules.
PLAYER’S CODE OF CONDUCT
61. Play Hard
Hustle never goes out of style. Coaches love players who try a little
harder on defense, jump a little higher for rebounds, and dive a
little more for those loose balls.
Include Your Parents
Your parents want to see you succeed. Let them into your
basketball world, but remind them there are ups and downs and
your goal is to have fun.
Have Fun
It’s a simple concept. Win or lose, try to enjoy every moment on the
court.
PLAYER’S CODE OF CONDUCT
62. NATURE OF THE GAME
A field goal scores two points for the shooting i team
if a player is touching or closer to the basket than
the three-point line, and three points (known
commonly as a 3 pointer or three) if the player is
behind the three-point line
The team with the most points at the end of the
gáme wins, but additional time (overtime) may be
issued when the game ends with a draw
