Ferdinand Magellan led the first circumnavigation expedition in 1519 aiming to reach the Spice Islands via a western route. The expedition encountered several islands and began establishing contact with native groups. They encountered the Datu Lapu-Lapu on Mactan Island who defeated Magellan's forces in a battle, killing Magellan. Despite this setback, the expedition continued establishing early colonial influence, with Rajah Humabon of Cebu and his subjects becoming among the first native Filipinos to convert to Christianity. The expedition helped pave the way for future Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines.
