Historical literacy is the ability to critically read, write, and think about history using evidence from a variety of sources to construct interpretations of the past. Developing strong historical literacy skills is important because it allows students to learn how to identify historical claims and think independently about history, which can help improve self-esteem, health, job prospects, and ability to achieve life goals. People can improve their historical literacy by learning reading and writing strategies that encourage asking questions about historical evidence to develop a mature understanding of the historical inquiry process.
