Donald Baer developed applied behavior analysis for people with intellectual disabilities, which improved lives and supported deinstitutionalization. Samuel Gridley Howe founded the first school for people with intellectual disabilities in 1848, though institutions grew despite his warnings against them. James Hinshelwood was the first to recognize and study dyslexia as a medical condition requiring specialized instruction.
