Archaea:
• Archaea is a unicellular organism that lack nucleus and therefore called
Prokaryotes.
• Archaea can be spherical, rod, spiral, rectangular or irregular in shape.
• They are often called Extremophiles because they have the ability to
survive in extreme environmental conditions, such as thermal hot springs
and high saline, acidic areas.
• It may exists as a single-cell or in the form of filaments or clusters.
• Archaea reproduce asexually by binary or multiple fission,
fragmentation, or budding.
• Examples include: Halophiles (microorganisms that may inhabit
extremely salty environments), methanogens (microorganisms that
produce methane), and thermophiles (microorganisms that can thrive
extremely hot environments.
Bacteria:
• Bacteria are small unicellular organisms that found almost
everywhere on Earth from soil to human body.
• The human body is full of bacteria, and in fact is estimated to contain
more bacterial cells than human cells.
• The three basic shapes of bacteria are bacillus (rod-shaped), coccus
(spherical-shaped), and spirillum (spiral-shaped).
• Unlike archaea there cellwall is composed of peptidoglycan (PG), a
mesh of polysaccharide strands that provide structure to the cellwall.
• Bacteria reproduce by binary fission. In this process the bacterium,
which is a single cell, divides into two identical daughter cells.
Eukaryotic cell:
• Eu=true; karyon=nucleus
• Eukaryotic cells are cells containing nucleus and membrane-bound
organelles and are the basis for both unicellular and multicellular
organisms.
• Organisms that have eukaryotic cells include protozoa, fungi, plants
and animals.
• These cells divide by a process called mitosis.
