Bullying In The Middle And High School
Bullying American society is made up of many different backgrounds and beliefs. Fortunately,
freedom of speech allows us the opportunity to openly discuss our opinions. This can also create
debate over social issues, or conflicts that affect numerous amounts of people within the society.
Some issues in this society include bullying and having security systems in schools. Bullying has
been a problem for teens in middle and high school. Many teens deal with harassment, stalking,
bullies, and abuse. This causes the victims to harm themselves and these actions should not be done
for a temporary problem. Teens already have a lot on their plate so schools should do more about
bullying. Many kids have committed bullycide, suicide caused by being bullied, and there should be
more laws to prevent this. Amanda Todd a 15 year old from Canada ... Show more content on

Another 15 year old from Oregon killed himself because no one accepted him for being gay. His
suicide raised national profile on youth bullying and gay victimization. He was intensely bullied
online and in person, his father said " He was hurting so bad... Yeah there were other issues but
ultimately it was all due to the bullying, for not being accepted for being gay" (Reporter). His name

Moving To Maine: A Short Story
It began with a small town and a small house. Until about 12 years of age I lived an average kids
childhood in Alfred, Maine. Everyone was kind, I had birthday parties, friends were always over, I
loved sports, especially basketball. Most of all, I was comfortable. At the time, I never realized
what, or how lucky I was. The first move was expected, it was planned for a year almost, but it was
still rough, I was going to be a South Carolinian. Hours of packing, most of it was done before we
moved. You could say we pre planned. My sister was off to college and me to high school. My
brother was young so nothing really bothered him. Goodbye, that was the hard part, all the friends
and family, but most of all the house, my life it was all going ... Show more content on

I wanted to do better, until I get the most unexpected news ever. It was happening again, but this
time wasn't just another house down the road, it was back to Maine. Even though I grew up here I
honestly didn't want to come back. I felt I was doing great but really I was comfortable. I
complained but in the end I had to face it. This unexpected move took two weeks for us to leave and
get to Maine. We stayed with my aunt for about six months, then moved right back to the same old
house in Alfred. I'm glad to be back, but I wonder what it would be like if I stayed but what matters
it what happened and what it did. I thought through those three years that my life was ruined and my
future was ruined, but in a way, it's helped. I hate to admit it, but it showed, because I now have
more confidence and passion than ever. Moving has been a part of my life, but really it's just work, I
like to think of it as a test, that I passed. After moving those five times I understood that, in life it's
most important to work hard, every kid hears that but I experienced it, and I'm thankful for it.
Without that I would've still made it through those three years, three high schools, and five houses,
but it was a matter of making the best of it; or making it

The Differences between the North and South on the Eve of...
The Differences between the North and South on the Eve of the Civil War On the eve of the Civil
war, both the North and the South had differences, both minor and large. The main difference was
Slavery where both sides had a completely dissimilar view point on how the treat black people an
example of this is the Missouri compromise in 1820. There were also differences in the rate of
industrialisation and Education. The largest difference between the North and the South was the
number of free black people. The North had hardly any slaves; however the South had around 4
million slaves. The North always looked at the South with antipathy and kept trying to abolish
slavery, but the South ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although this may seem good for the South, it still meant that shipping the cotton was impossible
from the south, and therefore they had to look towards the North. The industrialized North had the
facilities and the harbors to ship the cotton but this meant that the South had to pay the North to do
so. The cotton exhausted the soil very quickly and therefore the centre of production had to move
westwards towards the Mississippi and Alabama, this expansion was encouraged by the UK.
Another difference between the North and the South was that the North had realized how important
education was, and therefore was giving free education even to the poor. However the South had
only one school for orphans and didn't give much attention to education. Their ideas on how the
government system should be run also differed. The South wanted individual states to have more
power than the Federal government, but the North thought that the Federal government should be
given most of the power to come to decisions for the separate states. The Mexican war in 1846 made
the hostility between the North and the South even greater. Mr. Polk (President of USA at the time)
convinced congress that USA should go to war with Mexico as they were not handing California and
New Mexico to the USA. The war did take place, and 2 years later the USA had won and

Goodbye Earl
The Dixie Chicks released the song "Goodbye Earl" in 2000 on their album Fly. The song is
structured to follow what is known in music as a "story song," meaning it is narrated in the third
person. The story involves two best friends named Mary Anne and Wanda. The audience hears how
they parted ways after high school and Wanda married a man named Earl who was violent and
abused her. Mary Anne returns to Wanda when she gets hospitalized and they form a plan to kill Earl
by poisoning him with black–eyed peas. After he is killed, Mary Anne and Wanda move on with
their lives and open a roadside stand while Earl's death is never investigated. This song downplays
domestic violence through turning the lyrics and music video into satire. The lyrics are catchy and
upbeat and the main vocalist, Natalie Maines, has the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows a shift from a song about hard times to a song of celebration. The escape from hard
times begins with decision to kill Earl, but real happiness is found in the friendship and partnership
that is formed between Wanda and Mary Anne though bonding over killing Earl. After describing
the murder scene, the song goes back to the original, slower tempo with only Natalie Maines on the
vocals and is narrated in third person again. Earl's absence from society is made to seem like a good
thing through the verse, " it turns out Earl was a missing person who nobody missed at all." Mary
Anne and Wanda go on to open a roadside stand, have a happy, carefree life and "they don't lose any
sleep at night." Through this, they have found a way to live within the accepted patriarchal way of
life, but outside of the patriarchal control that caused problems for Wanda in the first place. They
have also progressed from a bad situation involving domestic violence to one of utopia with no

Northern And Southern States: A Comparative Analysis
Do you ever wonder what the United States used to look like? How different was it from today? It
seems that nowadays that the factors between states differs based on things such as location or what
kinds of people live there. Before the Civil War, the economy, climate, geography, culture, etc was
based off of whether a state was free in the North or enslaved in the South. People never really think
about what the states used to be like and how it has grown to what we know today. The Northern
and Southern states differed in many ways such as climate and geography, economy, and culture.
The climate and geography in the North was unlike the conditions in the South. The Northern states

The Northern states are made up of many cities, so the culture is determined by the life in that
region. Most Northerners were religious, believed in Christianity, and thought that God was against
slavery. Although there were many schools as well as churches, girls usually never went to
secondary school and only a few boys went. As for the South, the people of that area shared similar
beliefs. The culture of the South was determined by their own families, plantation life, and by the
owners of the upper class plantations. Since farmers spent a lot of time taking care of their own
crops, many of them had no education. While many adults were not able to go to school, many
children were able to get an education. There were so many differences between the cultures of the
North and South, but both regions had a bit of separation between the wealthy and the poor. Most of
the upper classes in the North were well educated since they were able to go to college. The rich
Southerners owned a lot of land where lower classes worked for them. They believed that they were
made to rule over the lower classes which was unlike the beliefs of the

The Passamaquoddy Indians Essay
The Passamaquoddy Indians
For several hundred years people have sought answers to the Indian problems, who are the Indians,
and what rights do they have? These questions may seem simple, but the answers themselves
present a difficult number of further questions and answers. State and Federal governments have
tried to provide some order with a number of laws and policies, sometimes resulting in state and
federal conflicts. The Federal Government's attempt to deal with Indian tribes can be easily
understood by following the history of Federal Indian Policy. Indians all over the United States
fought policies which threatened to destroy their familial bonds and traditions. The Passamaquoddy

The 1774 treaty was signed between the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Passamaquoddy
Tribe. The treaty stipulated that the tribe would surrender all claims to land in Massachusetts in
exchange for 23,000 acres at Indian Township and ten acres at Pleasant Point. Indian Township is
located just above Princeton, Maine, and Pleasant Point is located between Eastport and Perry,
Maine. This treaty was signed after the enactment of the Trade and Intercourse Acts, which held that
no treaties could be made with the Indians, except with federal approval. There was no federal
approval with this treaty (Brooks 3).
The State of Maine's courts in 1842 described Indians as charity cases and imbeciles, subject to
paternal control by the state. After years of being forcibly removed or displaced by white settlers,
the Passamaquoddy were reduced to living a meager existence form hunting, fishing, trapping, and
craft making (Brooks 3).
The General Allotment Act of 1887 was passed with the concept that if Indians were given
individual plots of land, they would farm that land and assimilate into the white culture. Allotted
parcels of land were given to families, and the excess lands were sold off. This resulted in a
disastrous loss of Indian Land, from 138 million acres in 1887 to 48 million in 1834, 20 million of
which was desert (Brooks 4). In 1924, Congress passed a law giving U.S.

Definition of Foster Care Foster care is a temporary situation in which adults care for a child or
children when their birth parents are unable to. Foster care is not for "delinquents" or problem
children, it is where children who cannot be taken care of by their birth parents, go to be taken care
of. Sometimes the family that has fostered a child goes on to later adopt them, but that is not always
the case. There are families to just chose to foster children and open up their home as a space for the

Splendid Little War
In 1898 the United States declared war on Spain after the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana

acquisition of territories within South America. The war soon came to be known as "The Splendid

the while not having many sacrifices in return. During this time period, the United States also went

Persuasive Essay On Community Service
The options for community service are endless. After narrowing down my options, I applied to
volunteer at the Crystal Lake Public Library this past summer. Having to go in for an interview was
a new experience for me, considering how I have never applied for a job. I believe that the exposure
to the interview process did two things for me: first, it put me out of my comfort zone, and second, it
taught me invaluable lessons about applying for future jobs and programs. This is because I am the
kind of person who can get nervous easily, and I struggle to hide it sometimes. An interview is a
type of situation that I would feel nervous in; however, I was able to overcome my fear and apply to
the library anyways. Therefore, I learned what I should expect to be asked, and I understand how I
should properly respond. Once I was accepted to the library's volunteer network, I was able to
choose which department I would work for in order to serve the community.
By volunteering at the library, I improved the Youth Services department, particularly by
participating in the Adopt–a–Shelf program. One part of my job was to rearrange the books in the
correct order when they got disorganized. This made it easier for parents and children to find the
books, movies, and CDs they were looking for. Another task that I enjoyed was replacing the books
to their proper location from the clean–up cart. It is important for books to be on the shelves where
they belong because otherwise it appears that books are not available. My favorite part of
volunteering for the library, however, was getting to help kids pick out the books they were looking
for. I remember many of the people I helped, but one of my fondest moments occurred on one of my
first days. I was working in the junior fiction department, and there was a young girl there. She
wanted to find a new series of books to read for the summer reading program. It was special to show
her the novels that I read when I was her age, especially when she chose to start the Mother–
Daughter Book Club books: my favorite series in middle school. It was moments like that that made
me proud to be a part of the Crystal Lake Public Library and their volunteer team. As a result of my

Harriet Beecher Stoowe Research Paper
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Harriet Beecher Stowe had a tremendous effect on the nineteenth century culture and politics. Her
thoughts were not popular because they were original, but because they struck the nerves of an
abundance of people living in this century. Stowe speaking out about her thoughts, was brave for a
woman of this time because women were not allowed to express their opinions on their beliefs and
ideas. She expresses much integrity and courage on writing what she believed was right for all
people of this century. Harriet Beecher Stowe has left her mark on society and continues to do so
through her works.
Harriet Beecher Stowe was born June 14, 1811 in Litchfield, Connecticut. She is the daughter of

However, the cost for the maintenance on the house was high which forced the Stowe's to move into
a smaller house in Hartford. After the civil war, Calvin and Harriet bought a home in Mandarin,
Florida due to Connecticut's harsh winters and the high prices of fuel. In Florida, Harriet's brother,
Charles Beecher, opened a school for emancipated individuals and urged Calvin to join him. Calvin
agreed and the Stowe's would travel back and forth from Connecticut to Florida when it became
winter time. Calvin's later health problems prevented the Stowe's from traveling, soon after stopping
the traveling, Calvin Stowe died on August 22, 1886. Harriet continued to write until her death on
July 1, 1896. ("HARRIET BEECHER STOWE (1811–1896)")
Harriet Beecher Stowe's most influential novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, struck the world. It was
published in book form in March 1852. In the first year of U.S. Publications, it sold a total of about
300,000 copies. The real reason for the publication of this book was to make the northern people
realize the terrible things slaves go through with cruel masters. Stowe wanted people to see how
wrong slavery was and the unfairness to African Americans. ("Stowe's Life and Uncle Tom's
Cabin") Abraham Lincoln greeted Stowe at the start of the American Civil War as the "little lady

Should Schools Get Rid Of Dress Codes
Lately, being dress coded has led to kids being sent home or, kids having to change into their PE
clothes. Has anyone else ever noticed how dress codes are more targeted towards girls or, limit their
freedom of expression? Or, how teachers and staff label girls as distractions? The dress code implies
that boys can't stop themselves from looking at girls' bodies, so, it's the girls' fault when boys can't
pay attention in math. It's the girls who are taken out of class to change their clothes. Getting rid of
dress codes would give kids more freedom of expression, getting rid of dress codes would make the
girls feel free, instead, of making them feel like distractions, and getting rid of dress codes would
make the girls feel more comfortable. All schools should get rid of dress codes. ... Show more

Most people really don't follow the dress code and usually they get away with it. Some dress codes
are stringent and ridiculous. Like this one "a Massachusetts' charter school made headlines for

Persuasive Essay- Ipads in Kindergarten
Auburn Schools: Moving in the Right Direction
In 2011, ten years after Maine began issuing laptops to all seventh graders, the Auburn School
System launched an initiative to provide an iPad 2 for each of its students entering kindergarten. At
a cost of roughly $200,000– representing a 5% increase in the school budget (Opinions Divided...)
some taxpayers were less than pleased– calling it a complete waste of money. But in Auburn– and
schools around the country– trends are emerging and showing the iPad to be a powerful learning
tool and a necessary investment in our children's future. For over a decade, Maine has been at the
forefront of integrating technology into public schools and there is no reason to stop now. Despite

Although the study lasted just 9 weeks, the results were promising. When tested, students who
received their iPads in the first week of school scored higher in 9 out of 10 areas, compared with
children who did not. One area in particular really stood out: recognizing sounds and writing letters.
Kindergartners with iPads gained 13.72 points, compared to an 11.58–point gain for students who
did not have iPads. That difference is significant, said Mike Muir, the Multiple Pathways leader for
Auburn schools (Auburn Report: iPads).
When pupils use iPads, more learning does not seem like a far stretch. With 100's of learning apps
available for download, teachers are able to customize the iPad and tailor the lesson to the individual
child's needs. This way, advanced children can reach their highest potential without becoming bored
while the rest of the class catches up. On the other side, if one or two children are struggling, the rest
of the class can move on, while the child receives the help she needs. Sherwood Heights Elementary
School kindergarten teacher Susan Lemeshow called the iPads "one of the most powerful teaching
tools I've ever used. ... I can put her on one book, her on a different level book," she said of two girls

A True Authority Figure
One Tiger Passed On To the people of Boston or who those this concerns: bullying declares the
strength or effect to scare someone, cyberbullying involves tormenting, harassing, or threatening of
a young person using the internet or technology devices. Individuals who become bullied are two to
nine times more likely to consider committing suicide ("Cyber Bullying Facts"). My condolences go
to those impacted by the tragic loss. A situation like this couldn't have ended any worse, however it
should have resolved less painfully by authority figures. Throughout Phoebe Prince's story a true
authority figure appears to be missing entirely. Phoebe Prince, 15 years old, moved from County
Clare in Ireland to South Hadley looking to continue enjoying the teenage life. Only to come to find
out, students in a little town could cause a wake of pain. The bullying became strong and ruthless.
Some peers called her the "Irish slut" on social network sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). She
constantly struggled with people in school knocking items out her hands, things thrown at her, and
received threatening text messages. In the middle of January, Phoebe hit rock bottom. She became
tormented and terrorized in the school library and hallways. That same day, Phoebe walked home
from school and then suddenly, one of the instigators threw a Red Bull can as she drove by. Phoebe
came home and hung herself in the stairwell defeating her pain. It didn't stop there. Students

Elephant Symbolism In 'The Good Braider'
Cecelia Ahern, author of Love, Rosie once wrote, "Home isn't a place, it's a feeling". This relates to
the main character of The Good Braider by Terry Farish, because for Viola, home is more of a
feeling of stability rather than a place. The Good Braider is a harrowing and eye opening novel
depicting the story of Viola, a teenage girl whose life changes drastically when she flees her home in
favor of safety. Viola leaves life as she knows it in war–ravaged South Sudan with her mother and
brother on the path to a better life in Portland, Maine. In Juba, she endured rape, fear, and
apprehension. However, she survived these circumstances with the symbolic help of elephant bone
given to Viola by her mother. As time went on and she immigrated to America, the elephant came to
symbolize a connection between her life back home and her new life in Portland. Towards the end of
the novel, the elephant becomes a symbol of comfort in stressful situations. As you can see, over the
course of The Good Braider, the elephant symbol changes as Viola does; what was once a symbol of
strength at the beginning of Viola's journey transforms into a connection between Juba and Maine,
and finally becomes a form of comfort.
In the beginning of Viola's journey, she faces rape, fear and apprehension in her homeland. She
survives life with the help of a piece of elephant bone given to her by her mother, Yumis. When
Viola was initially given the elephant bone, she notes, "When it's dark and the power has gone off,
my mother presses something hard into my palm. I can't see it, but she says it's a bit of elephant
bone she found among the stones farther north on the Nile... 'No animal can kill the elephant'" (23)
This quote shows the original meaning of the elephant bone. It symbolizes strength in that no one
can kill the elephant, which comes into play throughout Viola's life. For instance, in part one of the
novel, Viola is raped by a soldier. She says, "I knew the butt of his perik would slam into my head.
But then the elephant appeared to me. Be still, she warned" (35). This detail exhibits how in one of
the most grim ordeals of her life, Viola was able to survive because of the symbolic presence of the
elephant. Because she visualized it,

Folsom State Prison Mission Report
The United States has more than 2.3 million prisoners housed in approximately 1,800 state and
federal prisons (Ingraham, 2015). Each one of these has their own formal summary or mission
statement that lists the goals and values of that institution. These institutions offer several different
programs for prisoners, to include educational services and vocational training that is meant to help
them reintegrate back into society once their sentence is complete. I will look at four different adult
correctional systems in the United States and discuss their mission statements and the programs they
offer.

first maximum security prisons. It was originally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a small prison located in Warren, Maine, and has a population of only 916 inmates. Their
mission statement says "The primary mission of the Maine State Prison is to protect the public by
providing a safe, secure, and humane correctional environment for staff and the incarcerated
offender. We further the mission and promote rehabilitation by providing work opportunities and a
comprehensive treatment plan that encourages the offender to reenter society as a law–abiding,
productive citizen. Teamwork, professionalism, and integrity are the foundation of the guiding
principles and provide a path to our primary mission" (State of Maine: Department of Corrections,
n.d.). Through the Sunshine Lady foundation, the prison offers free education to the inmates. This
program was created by Doris Buffet after the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act
passed, which eliminated access for inmates to Pell Grants. All inmates are eligible for the program
if they are sentenced long enough to complete it and already possess either a high school diploma or
a GED. The inmates must write an application letter, gather references, and write an essay on a
subject the facility decides. The inmates must behave themselves if they want to continue the
program. Another goal of this program, besides the educational benefits, is that it encourages the
inmates to become mentors and tutors in the program, which helps them to develop more

Dear Olivia's Letter
Dear Olivia is a detailed reminisce of a girl who was bullied until she became reclusive and wanted
no contact with other people. She was sent many letters as well as e–mails to attempt to cheer her up
and get her back into the outside world. Later, with the help of her mother, she created a book with
said letters as well as her reactions to them. Some of the bullying that was described in the letters
seemed a bit unrealistic at times; the parent letter from Maggie was the most unrealistic considering
the circumstances. If something like throwing food happened often, then the supervisors should
have done something, or it should have been detailed that it is not allowed in the school rules. It
should not have escalated to the bullying stage,

Factors Contributing to the Start of the Civil War Essay
On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter, starting the American Civil War. The
Civil War would last for four years and result in massive American casualties. It would eventually
end with slavery abolished and the South under the military occupation of the North. The conflict
between the Southern and Northern states did not start suddenly, and did not only appear in the
1860s. Slavery was prevalent in the South and eventually made illegal in the North, which caused
Northerners to oppose slavery and Southerners to support it. As a result, there were conflicts over
the spread of slavery across the nation. They were first manifested in the Missouri Compromise, in
1820. Conflict over the spread of slavery ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Davis). By 1783, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts had abolished slavery, and the other
northern states soon followed. Slavery grew, however, in the South ("Events Leading to the Civil
War").
As American settlers moved west from the East Coast and new states were added to the Union, the
question of whether slavery would be allowed in these states arose. By general unspoken agreement,
in order to keep the Senate balanced between slave and free states, new states were admitted on
what Eric Corder calls in Prelude to Civil War "a 'one for you, one for me' basis" (4). That is, for
each new slave state that was admitted, a new free state would soon be added. Free Vermont was
admitted in 1791, slave Kentucky in 1792, slave Tennessee was added in 1796, free Ohio added in
1803, slave Louisiana added in 1812, free Indiana added in 1816, and so on ("Events Leading to the
Civil War"). This balance worked well until the area east of the Mississippi River had been filled
with states, and new states were to be added on the west side of the river.
Americans had argued for the abolition of slavery since before the Revolutionary War. Pennsylvania
Quakers spoke out against slavery in the colonial era. After the start of the Nineteenth Century,
support for abolition increased. Abolitionists usually merely spoke out against slavery, but they also
sometimes helped black slaves escape to freedom north of the

High School Hockey Research Paper
Many high school students participate in extracurricular activities like playing sports. Participation
in high school sports varies from sport to sport, by state to state, and differs for boys and girls. The
location quotient, which is state participants divided by total state enrollment which is then divided
by national participants divided by national enrollment, is a tool that can be used to find where the
highest concentrations of participation are located.
When looking at the map depicting the spatial distribution of boys high school hockey participation,
it can be seen that this sport had the least amount of participation in comparison to the other three
sports examined. Most of the participation associated with boys high school hockey is located in
Northeastern states aside from California and Colorado. The fact that the most participation is
happening in Northeastern states is most likely due to the climate in that area; winters may be longer
and colder allowing for people to utilize frozen lakes or ponds to ice skate and play hockey which
could popularize the sport for high school boys. Many of the states with high participation for boys
high school hockey border Canada which could also be a reason for the high participation due to the
popularity of the sport in Canada. Participation for boys high school lacrosse encompasses ... Show

Persuasive Research Paper About Cheerleading
"S–P–I–R–I–T, SPIRIT, LET'S HEAR IT!", this phrase may remind most people of cheerleaders
and high school football games, not a sport. There is more to cheerleading than chants and clapping.
Cheerleading has been around for over a hundred years and is steadily becoming more popular. The
sport has become so popular, cheer competitions are broadcasted on ESPN. Cheerleading has an
estimate of 600,000 participants. Cheerleading is broken down into two categories, sideline and
competitive. Sideline cheer is most commonly thought of. It focuses on keeping the fan's spirit high
at sporting events and preparing routines for halftimes or pep–rallies. Competitive cheer teams
practice year around, they later perform for judges and are ranked on their capabilities. Regardless
of the category referred to, cheerleading is a sport. Hours of practice and stretching are fitted into a
cheerleader's everyday schedule. Yet so many people question whether they are actual athletes
participating in an actual sport. The definition of a sport reads, "An activity involving physical
exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for
entertainment," (English Oxford Living Dictionaries). Competitive and sideline cheer meet all of
those requirements to be a sport. Many states have also begun to identify cheerleading as a sport. "In
the last few years, cheerleading has been classified as a sport in several states: Michigan, New York,

The Effect of Suicide at Maine West on Maine East
The girl that is walking down the hall past you, the one you said "reeked"? She has been going to
school with you since the first grade, and she's someone who has never done anything but be nice to
you, while all you do is degrade her. What you don't know, is that her mind is eating away at itself
because she is suffering from depression and anxiety. She does not need your words to make her feel
any worse; she is already at her breaking point. Suicidal tendencies are so common that about one in
five high school students actively considers suicide. Suicide is often at times the result of misery
that is commonly correlated with to an emotional, or mental illness in a person. It is thought that
there is an understanding as to why some decide take their own lives away, but there is no definite
explanation. Theories about mental illnesses range from field to field as to why they exist. One thing
that we do know to be truthful about suicidal tendencies are the contributing factors to the idea of
suicide. With that being said, Maine West and Maine South have a program that is designed to help
students understand this their mental state, and to help them if they are indeed weighing the idea of
suicide. If Maine East understood the positive effect that Elyssa 's Mission has at Maine West, and
Maine South, then the school may consider adopting the program into their own school.

  • 3. Moving To Maine: A Short Story It began with a small town and a small house. Until about 12 years of age I lived an average kids childhood in Alfred, Maine. Everyone was kind, I had birthday parties, friends were always over, I loved sports, especially basketball. Most of all, I was comfortable. At the time, I never realized what, or how lucky I was. The first move was expected, it was planned for a year almost, but it was still rough, I was going to be a South Carolinian. Hours of packing, most of it was done before we moved. You could say we pre planned. My sister was off to college and me to high school. My brother was young so nothing really bothered him. Goodbye, that was the hard part, all the friends and family, but most of all the house, my life it was all going ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I wanted to do better, until I get the most unexpected news ever. It was happening again, but this time wasn't just another house down the road, it was back to Maine. Even though I grew up here I honestly didn't want to come back. I felt I was doing great but really I was comfortable. I complained but in the end I had to face it. This unexpected move took two weeks for us to leave and get to Maine. We stayed with my aunt for about six months, then moved right back to the same old house in Alfred. I'm glad to be back, but I wonder what it would be like if I stayed but what matters it what happened and what it did. I thought through those three years that my life was ruined and my future was ruined, but in a way, it's helped. I hate to admit it, but it showed, because I now have more confidence and passion than ever. Moving has been a part of my life, but really it's just work, I like to think of it as a test, that I passed. After moving those five times I understood that, in life it's most important to work hard, every kid hears that but I experienced it, and I'm thankful for it. Without that I would've still made it through those three years, three high schools, and five houses, but it was a matter of making the best of it; or making it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Differences between the North and South on the Eve of the Civil War On the eve of the Civil war, both the North and the South had differences, both minor and large. The main difference was Slavery where both sides had a completely dissimilar view point on how the treat black people an example of this is the Missouri compromise in 1820. There were also differences in the rate of industrialisation and Education. The largest difference between the North and the South was the number of free black people. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although this may seem good for the South, it still meant that shipping the cotton was impossible from the south, and therefore they had to look towards the North. The industrialized North had the facilities and the harbors to ship the cotton but this meant that the South had to pay the North to do so. The cotton exhausted the soil very quickly and therefore the centre of production had to move westwards towards the Mississippi and Alabama, this expansion was encouraged by the UK. Another difference between the North and the South was that the North had realized how important education was, and therefore was giving free education even to the poor. However the South had only one school for orphans and didn't give much attention to education. Their ideas on how the government system should be run also differed. The South wanted individual states to have more power than the Federal government, but the North thought that the Federal government should be given most of the power to come to decisions for the separate states. The Mexican war in 1846 made the hostility between the North and the South even greater. Mr. Polk (President of USA at the time) convinced congress that USA should go to war with Mexico as they were not handing California and New Mexico to the USA. The Northern states are made up of many cities, so the culture is determined by the life in that region. Most Northerners were religious, believed in Christianity, and thought that God was against slavery. Although there were many schools as well as churches, girls usually never went to secondary school and only a few boys went. As for the South, the people of that area shared similar beliefs. The culture of the South was determined by their own families, plantation life, and by the owners of the upper class plantations. Since farmers spent a lot of time taking care of their own crops, many of them had no education. While many adults were not able to go to school, many children were able to get an education. There were so many differences between the cultures of the North and South, but both regions had a bit of separation between the wealthy and the poor. Most of the upper classes in the North were well educated since they were able to go to college. The rich Southerners owned a lot of land where lower classes worked for them. These questions may seem simple, but the answers themselves present a difficult number of further questions and answers. State and Federal governments have tried to provide some order with a number of laws and policies, sometimes resulting in state and federal conflicts. The treaty stipulated that the tribe would surrender all claims to land in Massachusetts in exchange for 23,000 acres at Indian Township and ten acres at Pleasant Point. Indian Township is located just above Princeton, Maine, and Pleasant Point is located between Eastport and Perry, Maine. This treaty was signed after the enactment of the Trade and Intercourse Acts, which held that no treaties could be made with the Indians, except with federal approval. There was no federal approval with this treaty (Brooks 3). The State of Maine's courts in 1842 described Indians as charity cases and imbeciles, subject to paternal control by the state. After years of being forcibly removed or displaced by white settlers, the Passamaquoddy were reduced to living a meager existence form hunting, fishing, trapping, and craft making (Brooks 3). The General Allotment Act of 1887 was passed with the concept that if Indians were given individual plots of land, they would farm that land and assimilate into the white culture. Allotted parcels of land were given to families, and the excess lands were sold off. This resulted in a disastrous loss of Indian Land, from 138 million acres in 1887 to 48 million in 1834, 20 million of which was desert (Brooks 4). In 1924, Congress passed a law giving U.S. ... • 21. Persuasive Essay On Community Service The options for community service are endless. After narrowing down my options, I applied to volunteer at the Crystal Lake Public Library this past summer. Having to go in for an interview was a new experience for me, considering how I have never applied for a job. I believe that the exposure to the interview process did two things for me: first, it put me out of my comfort zone, and second, it taught me invaluable lessons about applying for future jobs and programs. This is because I am the kind of person who can get nervous easily, and I struggle to hide it sometimes. An interview is a type of situation that I would feel nervous in; however, I was able to overcome my fear and apply to the library anyways. Therefore, I learned what I should expect to be asked, and I understand how I should properly respond. Once I was accepted to the library's volunteer network, I was able to choose which department I would work for in order to serve the community. By volunteering at the library, I improved the Youth Services department, particularly by participating in the Adopt–a–Shelf program. One part of my job was to rearrange the books in the correct order when they got disorganized. This made it easier for parents and children to find the books, movies, and CDs they were looking for. Another task that I enjoyed was replacing the books to their proper location from the clean–up cart. It is important for books to be on the shelves where they belong because otherwise it appears that books are not available. My favorite part of volunteering for the library, however, was getting to help kids pick out the books they were looking for. I remember many of the people I helped, but one of my fondest moments occurred on one of my first days. I was working in the junior fiction department, and there was a young girl there. She wanted to find a new series of books to read for the summer reading program. It was special to show her the novels that I read when I was her age, especially when she chose to start the Mother– Daughter Book Club books: my favorite series in middle school. • 26. Elephant Symbolism In 'The Good Braider' Cecelia Ahern, author of Love, Rosie once wrote, "Home isn't a place, it's a feeling". This relates to the main character of The Good Braider by Terry Farish, because for Viola, home is more of a feeling of stability rather than a place. The Good Braider is a harrowing and eye opening novel depicting the story of Viola, a teenage girl whose life changes drastically when she flees her home in favor of safety. Viola leaves life as she knows it in war–ravaged South Sudan with her mother and brother on the path to a better life in Portland, Maine. In Juba, she endured rape, fear, and apprehension. However, she survived these circumstances with the symbolic help of elephant bone given to Viola by her mother. As time went on and she immigrated to America, the elephant came to symbolize a connection between her life back home and her new life in Portland. Towards the end of the novel, the elephant becomes a symbol of comfort in stressful situations. As you can see, over the course of The Good Braider, the elephant symbol changes as Viola does; what was once a symbol of strength at the beginning of Viola's journey transforms into a connection between Juba and Maine, and finally becomes a form of comfort. In the beginning of Viola's journey, she faces rape, fear and apprehension in her homeland. She survives life with the help of a piece of elephant bone given to her by her mother, Yumis. When Viola was initially given the elephant bone, she notes, "When it's dark and the power has gone off, my mother presses something hard into my palm. I can't see it, but she says it's a bit of elephant bone she found among the stones farther north on the Nile... 'No animal can kill the elephant'" (23) This quote shows the original meaning of the elephant bone. It symbolizes strength in that no one can kill the elephant, which comes into play throughout Viola's life. For instance, in part one of the novel, Viola is raped by a soldier. She says, "I knew the butt of his perik would slam into my head. But then the elephant appeared to me. Be still, she warned" (35). Slavery grew, however, in the South ("Events Leading to the Civil War"). As American settlers moved west from the East Coast and new states were added to the Union, the question of whether slavery would be allowed in these states arose. By general unspoken agreement, in order to keep the Senate balanced between slave and free states, new states were admitted on what Eric Corder calls in Prelude to Civil War "a 'one for you, one for me' basis" (4). That is, for each new slave state that was admitted, a new free state would soon be added. Beginning on the first of January next year, this trip to the Dominican Republic will last thirteen days and will consist of long, hardworking, days of providing health care to more than 2,000 patients from fifteen rural villages. These many patient interactions occur in makeshift clinics, created in rural homes, schools and churches, which we will spend time building and breaking down each day of our trip. In regards to building and preparing each clinic site, each person on the trip will be responsible for various supplies and medications germane to their assigned health care team; each day, we will be responsible for bringing our supplies, which will be inventoried and organized each night, to our next clinic. During the program, we, as student nurses, will be lead by faculty members from the University of Southern Maine College ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When looking at the map depicting the spatial distribution of boys high school hockey participation, it can be seen that this sport had the least amount of participation in comparison to the other three sports examined. Most of the participation associated with boys high school hockey is located in Northeastern states aside from California and Colorado. The fact that the most participation is happening in Northeastern states is most likely due to the climate in that area; winters may be longer and colder allowing for people to utilize frozen lakes or ponds to ice skate and play hockey which could popularize the sport for high school boys. Many of the states with high participation for boys high school hockey border Canada which could also be a reason for the high participation due to the popularity of the sport in Canada. • 37. Persuasive Research Paper About Cheerleading "S–P–I–R–I–T, SPIRIT, LET'S HEAR IT!", this phrase may remind most people of cheerleaders and high school football games, not a sport. There is more to cheerleading than chants and clapping. Cheerleading has been around for over a hundred years and is steadily becoming more popular. The sport has become so popular, cheer competitions are broadcasted on ESPN. Cheerleading has an estimate of 600,000 participants. Cheerleading is broken down into two categories, sideline and competitive. Sideline cheer is most commonly thought of. It focuses on keeping the fan's spirit high at sporting events and preparing routines for halftimes or pep–rallies. Competitive cheer teams practice year around, they later perform for judges and are ranked on their capabilities. Regardless of the category referred to, cheerleading is a sport. Hours of practice and stretching are fitted into a cheerleader's everyday schedule. Yet so many people question whether they are actual athletes participating in an actual sport. The definition of a sport reads, "An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment," (English Oxford Living Dictionaries). Competitive and sideline cheer meet all of those requirements to be a sport. Many states have also begun to identify cheerleading as a sport. "In the last few years, cheerleading has been classified as a sport in several states: Michigan, New York, Maine, New Hampshire, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When we chat, she'll describe what it's like to hike up the stark, steep slopes of the Andes mountains, bargain her way through the labyrinthine, multi–storey markets in Lima, and dance in vibrant costume during the March carnivals. She'll teach me all about the different cultures and customs of her people, from street slang and idioms to folklore and silly New Year's superstitions.
