The ancient Indian system of education had three main features:
1. Education was considered very important and was accessible to all sections of society. Teachers had a high status in society.
2. The goal of education was self-realization and liberation of the soul. It also aimed to prepare students for their vocations.
3. The curriculum and teaching methods varied according to the student's caste but generally involved memorization, recitation, questioning, and discussion under the guidance of a teacher, often in residential schools located in forests away from cities.
