Romanticism was an international artistic and philosophical movement in Western cultures that redefined how people thought about themselves and the world. It emphasized nature, the goodness of humanity, the artist as an individual creator, nationalistic pride, and senses and emotions. Romanticism reacted against ideals of the upper class and embraced ideals of nature, heroic deeds, and the ordinary people portrayed in a realistic and socially conscious manner. Both Romanticism and Social Realism occurred during revolutionary times, with Romanticism corresponding to the American and French Revolutions, and Social Realism corresponding to the Industrial Revolution.
