Multimedia document processing using the Weblab platform: AXES project use ca...OW2
AXES (http://axes-project.eu) was a project co-funded by the European Union’s Seventh Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration. The goal of AXES was to develop tools that provide various types of users with new engaging ways to interact with audiovisual libraries, helping them to discover, browse, search and enrich video archives.
The OW2 WebLab (http://weblab-project.org) integration platform for multimedia processing has been used to aggregate the services developed by 9 partners in order to build the three demonstrators targeting various user groups: the media professionals, the journalists and researchers as well as the home users.
As a result of the AXES project, OW2 "Open AXES", is born. It provides a complete solution that gathers innovative audiovisual content analysis technologies (shot and keyframes detection, image classification, speech transcription, large scale indexing, similarity search, etc.) as well as an ergonomic interface to retrieve and navigate in video archives.
OpenIO is an open source Object Storage software with strong technological assets. You will discover who we are and what we do. Come to learn how OpenIO can be on the basis of others OW2 solutions, delivering the storage with restful APIs. Our solution is performance oriented solution. Thanks to the Conscience technology, the solution is aware of all nodes on the platform, and selects the best ones to route requests in real time. You will never have to rebalance data when they add capacity on their platform. New nodes can just be used immediately and automatically, without any loss of performance. Another important point is the Grid for Apps technology. With OpenIO, you will be able to use the free CPU/Ram of the storage hardware to run services like data transcoding, antivirus analysis, or anything else, to get most of your platform.
On the 20th of January 2016, Bob Jones, CERN and PICSE & HNSciCloud Coordinator, presented HNSciCloud, the recently launched (Jan 2016) European Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) project co-funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 Programme.
CERN and Huawei, one of the companies that is working with T-Systems to develop a prototype for HNSciCloud, in the context of CERN openlab, will jointly work on improvements to OpenStack for running large scale scientific workloads.
This collaboration was announced at the CERN openlab open day on 21st September 2017.
Over 90% of CERN’s compute resources are delivered using OpenStack. OpenStack provides software for private and public clouds and CERN and Huawei are among the major contributors to the open source project (Huawei is a platinum member of the OpenStack foundation).
With the needs of LHC computing in future years, efficient and flexible delivery of compute resources will be key. That's why CERN and Huawei have joined forces to jointly work on improvements to OpenStack for running large scale scientific workloads.
The developments will be done within the OpenStack community following the standard open source processes.
Focus areas will be:
Flexible resource management
Quotas
Bare metal allocation
Compute cells
Changes, resulting from this activity, will then be included into the CERN private cloud and Huawei’s private and public cloud offerings.
Project COLA is an Innovation Action funded by the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2020 Programme. The COLA project started in January 2017 and will last 30 months. OpenNebulaConf2017EU: Welcome Talk State and Future of OpenNebula by Ignacio ...OpenNebula Project
We’re moving into a world of open cloud — where each organization can find the right cloud for its unique needs. A single cloud management platform can not be all things to all people, there will be a cloud space with several offerings focused on different environments and/or industries. The OpenNebula commitment to the open cloud flows directly out of its mission — to become the simplest cloud enabling platform — and its purpose — to bring simplicity to the private and hybrid enterprise cloud. OpenNebula exists to help companies build simple, cost-effective, reliable, open enterprise clouds on existing IT infrastructure. The OpenNebula Conference will be a great opportunity to remind our vision, vision and commitment, to look back at how the project has grown in the last 8 years, and to give a peek at what to expect from the project in the near future.

Driving Network and Marketing Investments at O2 by Focusing on Improving the ...DataWorks Summit
The idea was to predict the customer experience, and their perception of the O2 network at both the user and area levels to drive the network and marketing investments. Here is why and how we got there.
In order to measure and predict customer network experience, O2 needed a streaming big data solution which would consume billions of events coming in from the network, in real-time, to measure the performance of the network as experienced by the customer. It was important to build a platform to gather all the relevant data; to co-relate that with the customer satisfaction index (CSI) surveys to understand the relationship of metrics to score. We applied machine learning methods to predict the CSI for all users on the network. Customer insights from the network helped us to build customer segmentations which are shaping various marketing and digital propositions at O2.
- The overall solution was based on a hybrid architecture, where Open Source technologies were brought together with Tableau visualization which enabled O2 to keep the maintenance cost down to a minimum.
- In order to have quick ROI, the solution was built as the prototype which continued to evolve and now currently handles 30 billion transactions a day, continuously streaming into the platform, and predicting customer experience for 35m+ users.
The O2 solution continued to expand every year to accommodate multi-fold growth in traffic, and to accommodate additional features. The decision to move from a community edition Hadoop to the Hortonworks-based platform enabled us to have a supported, faster, and more reliable service. The migration to Hortonworks was completed in October 2018 which has given us the reliable platform to expand the analytics use cases across the wider O2 businesses.
We live in times of lightning-quick change. Cloud is now the engine of digital transformation, and digitization is transforming both business models and personal lifestyles. Companies have to adapt fast to seize the opportunities and meet new challenges.
This presentation at CERN during the IT Technical Forum on 24 Nov 2017 highlighted the achievement of the Up2University Project (https://up2university.eu/, funded under the EC Call ICT-22-2016: Technologies for Learning and Skills), which aims at bridging the gap between secondary schools, higher education, and the research domain adopting learning technology and methodology to let high school students use the very same tools & services used by real researchers doing Big Science at CERN.
In order to provide concrete example of CERN core technologies running in containers, the Up2U cloud based education services have been ported to the HNSciCloud prototype systems provided by T-Systems and IBM.
TNC17, its 33rd edition, was held in the UNESCO City of Media Arts of Linz, Austria between 29 May - 2 June 2017.
The 30th of May, Edoardo Martinelli, CERN, gave a presentation (available below) entitled "Network experiences with Public Cloud Services" during the session "Connecting to cloud providers". This session was meant to present the current state of networking for cloud services, to lay out important challenges in the area, and to point to future work. The session was also intended to stimulate and facilitate discussion in the community.
Edoardo Martinelli presented with the aim of highlight the experience of a large institution (CERN) in procuring large-scale cloud resources on behalf of a scientific community, and the results from initial deployments of such services. The presentation has given details of networking challenges, how these have been overcome, and the performance obtained. Based on these experiences, recommendations for networks in support of cloud resources have been given. The presentation was included 2017 experience from the HNsciCloud project.
Docker container virtualization provides an efficient way to create isolated scientific environments, adjusted and optimized for a specific problem or a specific group of users. It allows to efficiently separate responsibilities - with IT focusing on infrastructure for image repositories, preparation of basic images, container deployment and scaling, and physicists focusing on application development in environment of their choice.
Depending on demand, compute resources can be dynamically provisioned and a containerised scientific environment can be deployed in a matter of seconds on a user laptop, a batch farm, an HPC cluster or a cloud without need for a user to learn new environment, install additional libraries, resolve dependencies, recompile applications.
The present talk will describe DESY's experience with providing Docker service on our HPC cluster and report progress in using cloud to transparently and elastically extend containerised scientific environments - a work being done within the HELIX NEBULA Science Cloud project.
