The nuage R&D project to create a strongly secured, resilient, distributed cloud based on opensource standard end in summer 2014. Two components have been released by the partners of the consortium. September 2014, Celeste present the StarDC, a mini datacenter ready to use in 4 month for 150 K€. April 2015, Non Stop Systems, the consortium leader, present CloudStar, a private cloud controller full open source (Debian-Openstack-Ceph-Zabbix...) ready to use in 5 weeks for 30 K€. Those two components bring full automation and remote administration to allow the deployment of distributed clouds toward large areas. French local public administration and SME's start experimentation of the first nuage components.

Come to learn how OpenIO can be on the basis of others OW2 solutions, delivering the storage with restful APIs. Our solution is performance oriented solution. Thanks to the Conscience technology, the solution is aware of all nodes on the platform, and selects the best ones to route requests in real time. You will never have to rebalance data when they add capacity on their platform. New nodes can just be used immediately and automatically, without any loss of performance. Another important point is the Grid for Apps technology. OCCI (Open Cloud Computing Interface ) [1] is an open protocol for management tasks in the cloud environment focused on integration, portability and interoperability with a high degree of extensibility. It is designed to bridge differences between various cloud platforms (or cloud middleware) and provide common ground for users and developers alike.
The rOCCI framework [2], originally developed by GWDG [3], was written to simplify the implementation of the OCCI 1.1 protocol in Ruby and later provided the base for a working client and server implementation targeting OpenNebula as its primary back-end cloud platform. This is some input for a panel discussion about "Challenges of Cloud Computing-based Systems" I attend at the 9th International Conference on Cloud Computing, GRIDs, and Virtualization (CLOUD COMPUTING 2018) in Barcelona, Spain in February 2018.
Cloud-native applications (CNA) are build more and more often according to microservice and independent system architecture (ISA) approaches. ISA involves two architecture layers: the macro and the micro architecture layer. Software engineering outcomes on the micro layer are often distributed in a standardized form as self-contained deployment units (so called container images). There exist plenty of programming languages to implement these units: JAVA, C, C++, JavaScript, Python, R, PHP, Ruby, ... (this list is almost endless) But on the macro layer, one might mention TOSCA and little more. TOSCA is an OASIS deployment and orchestration standard language to describe a topology of cloud based web services, their components, relationships, and the processes that manage them. This works for static deployments. However, CNA are elastic, self-adaptive - almost the exact opposite of what can be defined efficiently using TOSCA. For these kind of scenarios one might mention Kubernetes or Docker Swarm as container orchestrators which are intentionally build to operate elastic services formed of containers. But these operating platforms do not provide expressive and pragmatic programming languages covering the macro layer of cloud-native applications.
So it seems there is a gap and the question arises, whether we need further (and what kind of) macro layer languages for CNA?

The first was to replace our vmware based hosting environment with an open, hardware-vendor neutral, hypervisor environment. The second project’s goal was to enable our dev-teams more. This is the story of the second project. What we built and how it works using opennebula and ceph and our existing tooling.
At the time of writing of this abstract, our opennebula environment is used by 4 dev-teams (almost 30 developers) and an infra team, hosting 700 virtual servers and counting. We are executing 300 deploys (as part of the development cycle) per week and counting …

The OCRE project aims to provide the first end-to-end instance of organised, large-scale market pull for EO services in Europe. These services will be provided for free to EU researchers through the European Open Science Cloud. To ensure that the services meet the actual needs of the research community we invite both the demand and the supply side, to share their views and engage in a productive dialogue. Our aim is to capture the needs of EU researchers and inform the EO service providers so that they make available services that effectively address them. We will also explain how the OCRE process will work, how the different stakeholders should be involved and how to make the most of the foreseen benefits.

Fog Computing – Enhancing the Maximum Energy Consumption of Data Servers.dbpublications
Fog Computing and IoT systems make use of end-user premises devices as local servers. Here, we are identifying the scenarios for which running applications from NDCs are more energy-efficient than running the same applications from MDC. With the complete survey and analysis of various energy consumption factors such as different flow-variants and time-variants with respect to the Network Equipment we found two energy consumption use cases and respective results. Parameters such as current Load, Pmax, Cmax, Incremental Energy etc evolved with respect to system structure and various data related parameters leading to the conclusion that the NDC utilizes relatively reduced factor of energy comparative to the MDC. The study reveals that NDC as a part of Fog makeweights the MDCs to accompany respective applications, especially in the scenarios where IoT based applications are used where end users are the source data providers and can maximize the server utilization.

Edge Computing is becoming increasingly popular nowadays thanks to the growing availability of cloud, bare-metal and 5G providers offering flexible and affordable access to edge resources around the globe. The idea is based on moving core computational processes and storage to distant locations that are closer to the entities they interact with, like end-users and IoT devices. The benefits come from improving network latency and user experience, reducing security risks, and minimizing data transfers to central cloud locations. Thanks to the €2.1M awarded in 2019 by the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Program, OpenNebula has developed the first open source Edge Computing platform in Europe. This talk analyses the benefits and challenges associated with Edge Computing, introduces the “True Hybrid Cloud” concept, and explores how this new EU-funded Edge Computing platform contributes to consolidate Europe’s digital sovereignty by integrating other relevant European open source technologies and by providing future access to the GAIA-X federated infrastructure.

Towards a sustainable solution to open source sustainability, OW2online20, Ju...OW2
A few years ago, Heartbleed epitomized a massive open source sustainability problem for critical parts of the internet infrastructure. The bug, which affected the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library, notably compromised the confidentiality of 4.5 million US patient records and cost the industry an estimated $500M. It was soon revealed that the root cause of the issue was that OpenSSL was precariously understaffed. Open source sustainability became a major theme overnight. Stories of maintainer burn-out made the headlines. And tentative solutions started to emerge, most of them donation-based. In this talk we’ll explore a number of existing strategies to fund open source and make it more sustainable, from patronage to dedicated ad networks. And we’ll defend the idea that the best path to open source sustainability is to help companies understand the tangible business value they can get from contributing to open source.

Open source contribution policies are long, boring, overlooked documents, that generally suck. They're designed to protect the company at all costs. But in the process, end up hurting engineering productivity, and morale. Sometimes they even unknowingly put corporate IP at risk.
But that's not inevitable.
It's possible to write open source contribution policies that make engineers lives easier, boost morale and productivity, reduce attrition, and attract new talent. And it's possible to do so while reducing the company's IP risk, not increasing it.
In this talk, we'll look at the general structure of contribution policies, examples in the wild, and tactics to make them suck less.

Covid-19 pandemic has hit everywhere and forced many people to work from home. If you were lucky enough to be in one of these modern companies that have adopted digital transformation years ago, would that be a problem? Many people have thought it wasn't, but it has really been. And what about the rest of the software developers involved in companies not ready for remote work at all?
It's been said that nothing has boosted more companies' digital transformation than covid-19. But, are their managers ready for such change? Managing software development at scale is not an easy task, and this pandemic has disrupted the way projects are being developed in many companies.
During this talk, I would like to share lessons learned from open source development at scale that might help companies to adapt to these changes. But more specifically, lessons about how software development analytics help managers to understand collaborative remote work.

Presentation by Hui Song, Senior Scientist, SINTEF. We would like to share our research journey towards enabling DevOps for IoT applications, and how Open Source makes the journey feasible and fun.
DevOps is widely adopted for developing cloud applications, which supports developers in continuously placing software changes directly to production. As companies are including IoT and Edge devices into their IT infrastructures, supporting DevOps for IoT is a must. However, IoT challenges some fundamental assumptions behind DevOps, such as the homogeneous infrastructure and centralized governance, and therefore, breaking-through research is needed. Funded by H2020, 30 people from 12 partners crossing academia and industry gathered to solve these fundamental challenges, which results in full-stack open source tools for automatic deployment, learning-based operation and security monitoring of IoT applications, and risk management of the development process. The tools are evaluated on industrial use cases in intelligent transportation, smart building, and eHealth.
The mass open source tools and communities around IoT development provides the sound foundation for this design research and the opportunities for the further exploitation of the results. In particular, we are proud of spinning off a start-up to commercialize the risk management services in the open source + SaaS model.

We propose a walkthrough of current utilization of Open Source Software in capacity planning for the Orange network infrastructure.
The objective of our project is to have a platform that helps engineers to carefully plan the resources available to them as well as to correlate different incidents within remote parts of the infrastructure.
In order to achieve this we started using Cacti with the Spine collector which worked great, but Orange France is a very large company with many entities, each with its own governance, and so we began to see some limitations.
There was a need to centralize some information from different parts in Orange France as well as to integrate the equipment capacity and load values into BigData Orange.
In order to achieve this we developed the “Puits de donneés” platform completely based on Open Source Software.
The visualization and statistical analysis part is handled by Grafana while the ETL runs on Apache Software Foundation products like NiFi, Zookeeper and Ambari with a storage solution from MariaDB for which we did extensive performance tuning and customization due to the large amounts of data.

These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
