Cloud in Brazil
● Let’s see some informations about cloud in Brazil
– Number of publications on cloud
– Number of conferences
– Principals conferences
Cloud in Brazil
● In the last 4 years in Brazil there was
– More than 480 papers presented in different
conferences about cloud (not included papers in
journals)
– These papers where in more than 130 conferences
Principal Conferences
● Some of the principal conferences on Cloud where Brazil
researchers had publications (total 21):
– SoCC - ACM Symposium on Cloud Computing
– CCGrid - IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster,
Cloud and Grid Computing
– CloudCom - IEEE International Conference on Cloud
Computing Technology and Science
– IEEEECLOUD - IEEE International Conference on Cloud
Computing
– UCC - IEEE/ACM International Conference on Utility and
Cloud Computing

Cluster vs Cloud
ïŹ
Traditional hardware Cluster
 Hardware cost
 Hardware maintenance
 People for maintenance
ïŹ
Cloud Computing
 Without acquisition and maintenance cost
 Minimum staff
 Pay per use
6
Challenges in applications migration
to cloud
ïŹ
Portability:
ïŹ
Lack of application and code documentation, slow down migration.
ïŹ
Scientific applications have a very specific problem domains.
ïŹ
Migration requires a high level knowlegde of application .
ïŹ
Applications developed without version control or comments creates a
bottleneck in migration (legacy code)
ïŹ
Costs
ïŹ
Porting application code to PaaS.
ïŹ
Number of processing instances
ïŹ
Acceptable time to solution
7
Challenges in applications migration
to cloud
ïŹ
Resources
 Network
ïŹ
Scaling, instance migration, resilience.
 Storage
ïŹ
Local and distributed file systems.
 Processing
ïŹ
Number of instances vs number of processors.
 Applications
ïŹ
CPU-bound, IO-bound, Network-bound.

SIG – Special Interest Group
● Considering the evolution on the research and use of cloud
in Brazil, it is time to create a SIG
● Considering that cloud is a tool, a resource, used by many
different areas, the SIG needs to attend all of them
● Let’s go to SIG-CLOUD
THANKS
