The document provides recommendations for commissioning testing of medium voltage cables, including sheath testing, withstand testing, and partial discharge (PD) testing. It recommends test voltage levels and durations for different cable types, and evaluates PD measurement results to determine if cables pass or require replacement. The recommendations aim to fulfill safety requirements and quality control by detecting workmanship issues not found during initial testing.
VLF Testing of Cables Using IEEE 400.2. Presentation by John Densley that describes the in situ testing of distribution cables using very low frequency (VLF) voltages according to IEEE Standard 400.2. The Standard includes criteria to assess the condition of XLPE, EPR and paper insulated cable circuits. How the criteria were established and their limitations will be discussed, along with Partial Discharge (PD) testing using VLF.
John, the President of ArborLec Solutions Inc. has worked on electrical ageing mechanism and diagnostics techniques in electrical insulation for more than 35 years. He has a sound practical and theoretical knowledge of ageing and failure mechanisms of insulation systems in high voltage equipment such as medium and high voltage cables, transformers and switchgears.
Results of 10 years after installation tests with partial discharge detection...HighVoltageDUT
In 2004 Alliander decided to add partial discharge (PD) measurements in their after installation test policy. Over the last years, dozens of accessories and a few cable parts were taken out of the tested cables, based on PD activity, measured during after installation test. In many cases severe abnormalities were found, threatening the reliability of the cable system, but also cases were found where the reason for PD was not clear. It is also discovered that cable systems can contain PD’s in accessories but still survive the after installation test.

KEMET has been manufacturing conductive polymer based surface mount tantalum capacitors (KO-CAP[registered trademark]) since 1999. Capabilities have been successfully introduced into the market, such as low equivalent series resistance (ESR) series for decoupling, high voltage series for DC-DC converters and power management, and high-energy series for enterprise solid state drives (SSD) applications.
A recent application trend of conductive polymer based tantalum capacitors requires high performance in harsh environments. One example is the application in the automotive industry which requires AEC-Q200 qualification. Amongst all of the AEC-Q200 requirements, the most challenging one for polymer tantalum capacitors with traditional technology is the highly accelerated test under 85 [degree]C / 85% relative humidity (RH) with DC bias up to rated voltage for 1000 hours.
Other industries such as telecommunication are also starting to request 85 [degree]C / 85% RH qualification. A possible reason is an extrapolation based on data from other components that any device passing the 85 °C / 85% RH condition for 1000 hours could have field use life for 5 to 10 years under the real-life environmental conditions.
In this paper, the basic construction and manufacturing process of polymer Ta capacitors is first described. The challenges for polymer Ta capacitors under unbiased and biased high temperature and high humidity conditions will be discussed. This will be followed by possible technical solutions and the performance of our current Polymer Electrolytic T598 series of products.

ISO/IEC 14763-3 edition 2 was published in 2014. This standard supports the implementation and operation of customer premises cabling by specifying systems and methods for inspecting and testing optical fiber cabling. In 2015, a corrigendum was published. Currently, an amendment is under review to make further corrections. Also, a supplement to the amendment was added.
The corrigendum made changes to connecting hardware attenuation values and modified the equations for test limits. The amendment made corrections to end face inspection, test methods, and uncertainty. The supplement to the amendment fixed errors within the uncertainties. Details of the changes are described herein.
Experiences with MnO2 tantalum capacitors in the past may have caused some engineers to look at alternatives. However, a decade of a new Polymer tantalum solve many of the previous challenges, especially in Automotive applications.

New Approaches for Maintenance Grounding in Medium Voltage SwitchgearSchneider Electric
Copyright AIST Reprinted with Permission. Presented at the 2013 Iron and Steel Technology Conference and Exposition (AISTech 2013). Maintenance grounding is a traditional and proven method for protecting electrical workers during medium voltage switchgear maintenance. When properly applied, it eliminates dangerous differences in electric potential, and can redirect harmful current during events such as unforeseen induced voltage from motors and generators, accidental bus contact with adjacent live parts, or human error that causes equipment to be re-energized.
