Health Education on prevention of hypertensionRadhika kulvi
Hypertension is a chronic condition of concern due to its role in the causation of coronary heart diseases. Hypertension is a worldwide epidemic and important risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke and renal diseases. Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels and is sufficient to maintain tissue perfusion during activity and rest. Hypertension is sustained elevation of BP. In adults, HTN exists when systolic blood pressure is equal to or greater than 140mmHg or diastolic BP is equal to or greater than 90mmHg. The

WHAT IS HEART
DISEASE?
Any condition that causes the HEART itself
to have ALTERED FUNCTION will fall under
this designation.
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE is often used
interchangeably with HEART DISEASE but it
is also inclusive of the ALTERED FUNCTION
of BLOOD VESSELS that enter and leave the
heart and extend out to the entire body.

HEART DISEASE IS REAL AND WILL HIT HARD!
SEDENTARY LIFE
LACK OF EXERCISE
SMOKING
BECOMING OBESE OR MORBIDLY OBESE
HIGH SUGAR, SALT, AND MEAT INTAKE
DAILY DAIRY INTAKE
LOW VEGETABLE INTAKE
ALCOHOL
ILLICIT DRUG USE VIA EXCESSIVE STRAIN & STIMULATION
PLACING ONESELF UNDER CONSTANT HIGH MENTAL STRESS
DEVELOPING DIABETES TYPE 2 (YES, IT IS A CHOICE)
DAILY USE OF ARTIFICIAL & HIGHLY PROCESSED FOODS
LACK OF SUN EXPOSURE- EXCESSIVE INDOOR DWELLING
CALCIUM SUPLEMENTS, ESPECIALLY CALCIUM CARBONATE WITHOUT
VITAMIN D

THE FOLLOWING LIST OF POOR
LIFESTYLE CHOICES IS TO HELP THE
AVERAGE PERSON UNDERSTAND
THAT . . .
11. 11
CAUSES: Loss of a loved one through separation or death; high stress situation
such as job loss, sudden bad news, surprise, certain prescribed drugs.
MECHANISM: Overstimulation of the heart by adrenal gland stress hormones that
are induced by any of the above type of stressors. Drugs that can cause the
syndrome: epinephrine, duloxetine (Cymbalta), venlafaxine (Effexor) thyroid meds.
They may overstimulate the heart muscle in their actions on the body.
SYMPTOMS: Chest pain/pressure and shortness of breath
DIAGNOSTICS: History and physical exam; EKG, echo, stress test and angiography
(cardiac catheterization); may be no findings at all on the exams.
TREATMENT: Same or similar to that given for heart attacks or angina .
PREVENTION: It may not be easy BUT the better condition your heart and body are
in, the less likely you are to experience this uncomfortable and frightening
condition.
There is an entity that is
recognized called
BROKEN HEART SYNDROME

HEART FACTS
HEART ACTIVITY BEGINS AROUND 4 WEEKS IN UTERO
IT IS THE SIZE OF 2 FISTS HELD TOGETHER ON AVERAGE
NEARLY 2 GALLONS OF BLOOD ARE PUMPED IN A MINUTE & 2,500 GALLONS A
DAY; BEATS OVER 3 BILLION TIMES IN A LIFETIME
IN STUDIES WITH OVER 30,000 PEOPLE FROM 52 COUNTRIES, THOSE WITH
BOTH TV AND A CAR HAD 27% HIGHER RATE OF HEART ATTACKS THAN
THOSE WITHOUT…IT IS THE INACTIVITY THAT IS THE REAL REASON
POLLUTION CAUSES HIGHLY REACTIVE FREE RADICALS THAT CAN DAMAGE
HEART
SEX (ENJOYED) CAN GIVE YOUR HEART A GOOD WORKOUT- CAUTION WITH
UNDERLYING HEART PROBLEMS AND WHEN ON MEDICATION, HOWEVER
WOMEN HAVE 500, 000 HEART ATTACKS ON AVERAGE PER YEAR (ABOUT 50
THOUSAND MORE THAN MEN)
HEART RATES IN WOMEN BEAT AN AVERAGE OF 8 TIMES/MINUTE > MEN
IN 1929 A GERMAN DOC NAMED FORSSMANN DID HIS OWN CARDIAC
CATHETERIZATION- THE FIRST TO START THE PROCESS!
ARISTOTLE, PLATO AND OTHERS ALL HAD THEIR OWN IDEAS ABOUT THE
HEART BUT ARISTOTLE WAS RIGHT- THE HEART PUMPED BLOOD, NOT AIR
FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT WAS IN 1967 BY A SOUTH AFRICAN PHYSICIAN,

LATEST
SCIENTIFIC
EVIDENCE…• EXERCISE WILL REDUCE RISK OF
HEART DISEASE (JOURNAL OF
AMERICAN COLLEGE OF
CARDIOLOGY)
• A CHILD OR ADOLESCENT
SHOULD HAVE 60 MINUTES OF
GOOD AEROBIC PHYSICAL
ACTIVITY DAILY;
• AN ADULT SHOULD HAVE 150
MINUTES EACH WEEK THAT
TRANSLATES TO 30 MINUTES IN 5
DAYS A WEEK OR JUST OVER 20
MINUTES DAILY: JOG, SWIM,
DANCE, ACTIVE SPORT
ACTIVITY…KEEP MOVING!!
21. 21
• LAUGHTER FOR 15 MINUTES
A DAY IS A VERY GOOD
EXERCISE FOR THE
ARTERIAL WALL LINING; DR.
MICHAEL MILLER OF UNIV OF
MARYLAND AND ACC, 2016
• DEPRESSION IS A MAJOR
ISSUE FOR MANY HEART
ATTACK VICTIMS (EUROPEAN
SOCIETY OF CARDIOLOGY,
2016)
• ANGER OUTBURSTS CAN BE
TRIGGERS FOR HEART
ATTACKS, STROKES AND
OTHER CV CONDITIONS
WITHIN 2 HOURS FOLLOWING
THE OUTBURST (ESC, 2014)
22. 22
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, SMOKING AND DIABETES MELLITUS
ARE ALL MODIFIABLE RISK FACTORS THAT MUST BE TAKEN
CARE OF TO REDUCE CARDIAC EVENTS!
23. 23
• HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, SMOKING AND DIABETES MELLITUS ARE
ALL MODIFIABLE RISK FACTORS THAT MUST BE TAKEN CARE OF TO
REDUCE CARDIAC EVENTS
• INFLAMMATION IS WHAT WE MUST REDUCE IN THE ARTERIAL WALLS;
HAVE A CARDIAC CRP CHECK TO SEE WHAT YOUR HEART EVENT RISK
IS- HIGH LEVELS ARE BETTER INDICATOR FOR RISKS THAN
CHOLESTEROL
• HEART ATTACKS OFTEN OCCUR WITH NORMAL CHOLESTEROL
LEVELS
• TRIGLYCERIDES SHOULD BE NORMALIZED; IF RATIO OF
TRIGLYCERIDES TO HDL IS 3:1, YOU SHOULD WORK TO LOWER THE
NUMBER TO 2:1, SO 150:50 SHOULD BE 100:50
• TRANS FATS ARE A PROBLEM- AVOID THEM; CONSUME LESS THAN 20
GRAMS OF SATURATED FATS PER DAY (FDA)
• ESSENTIAL OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS (EPA AND DHA FOUND IN FISH OIL)
AT 3,000 MG DAILY MAY LOWER TRIGLYCERIDES (AMERICAM JOURNAL
OF CLINICAL NUTRITION); MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT CONSUMING
ENOUGH IN THE DIET; WALNUTS, PEANUTS, SOY, CANOLA AND FLAX
24. 24
• GENETIC STUDIES TO HAVE MEDICINES TO TARGET THE BLOOD
VESSEL BUILDUP OF PLAQUE ARE IN PROGRESS TO ACHIEVE
BETTER SUCCESS THAN STATIN DRUGS
• CONSUME 5-9 SERVINGS OF VEGETABLES/FRUIT DAILY (FDA,
AHA)
• SMOKING MARIJUANA (POT, WEED) QUINTUPLES YOUR RISK FOR
HEART ATTACK WITHIN 1 HOUR OF INHALATION (BETH ISRAEL
DEACON MEDICAL CENTER IN BOSTON)
• EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL DRIZZLED ON FOOD HELPS REDUCE
LDL AND RAISE HDL (SPANISH STUDY, 2016)

IF YOU TAKE CARE AND SPEND THE TIME, YOU NEED
NOT HAVE TO BE SUBJECT TO DRUGS, MULTIPLE
TESTS, MULTIPLE PROCEUDRES, SURGERY AND
FREQUENT MEDICAL VISITS.
NOTE: DRUGS WILL HAPPEN IF YOU ARE NOT
MINDFUL OF HOW YOU ARE LIVING YOUR LIFE.
CREATING THE “MONSTER” IS NOT
WHAT YOU WANT OR NEED.
TAKE HEED!!
26. THE HEART NEEDS
LOVE

THE LOVE YOU HAVE IN YOUR OWN HEART
WILL MAKE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN
THE HEALTH OF YOUR HEART AND OTHER
ORGANS.
27. 27
EMOTIONS ARE POWERFUL
LOVING FEELINGS ARE POSITIVE &
ESPECIALLY NURTURING FOR THE HEART.
PEACEFULNESS, CONTENTMENT,
EXHILARATION, COMPASSION &
CONNECTEDNESS ARE ALSO HEART
ENHANCING.
ANGER, JEALOUSY & HATE ARE NEGATIVE
EMOTIONS THAT ARE DETRIMENTAL TO
HEART & BLOOD VESSELS: THEY CAUSE
IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF BIOCHEMICALS
THAT STIFFEN THE ARTERIES, INCREASE
THE BLOOD PRESSURE AND PUT ADDED
STRAIN ON HEART PUMPING…
THIS CAN LEAD TO
ATHEROSCLEROSIS, HTN, HEART
ATTACKS, STROKES OR DEATH.
