  • Proper hand washing technique poster Dramatic play: Children will use their imagination
  • When to wash my hands poster to “pass on germs”

  • Following books:
-“Germs are not for sharing” by: Elizabeth
      Verdick
-“Germs make me sick” by: Melvin Berger
-“Wash your hands!” by: Tony Ross

Lesson Steps:
   1. Ask students if they know what germs are (by show of hands.)
   2. Have open class discussion identifying what a germ is, where they can be found, and how they
      can harm our bodies.
   3. Read “Germs make me sick” by: Melvin Berger.
   4. Demonstrate how to cover mouth when coughing/sneezing.
   5. Explain how easily germs can be shared.
   6. Students will then sit in a large circle.
7. Teacher will have a spray bottle filled with water mixed with glitter.
   8. Teacher will “sneeze” into his/her hands and spray the glitter water into their hands.
   9. Teacher will explain to students that the glitter on her hands will be considered germs.
   10. Next the teacher will shake hands with the student to right of him/her and ask the student to
       look at their hands.
   11. Student will identify that the germs (sparkles) from the teachers’ hands are now on their hands.
   12. To allow all students to participate, the teacher will go around the circle and spray one hand of
       every other student.
   13. Teacher will explain that as a class we will count to three and then shake hands with the person
       to the right of us.
   14. Students will shake hands and then observe their own hands.
   15. We will then have an open class discussion about what they observed.
   16. Next we will read, “Germs are not for sharing” by: Elizabeth Verdick.
   17. We will discuss things we can to individually to not share germs, wash our hands.
   18. As a class we will then make a list of situations where we should wash our hands, creating our
       own class poster.
   19. Next the poster showing proper hand washing technique will be shown and displayed.]
   20. As a class the teacher should have students practice the technique before actually going to wash
       their hands.
   21. Encourage students to sing a song while washing hands to make it more fun. (For example, sing
       the ABC’s)
   22. Students will then have a chance to go to the sink one by one and practice good hand washing.
   23. End by reading, “Wash your hands!” by Tony Ross.

Safety Issues: Adaptations:

                                                  3. All stories will be read aloud and discussed to help ESOL
students and students with learning disabilities.

Questions to Prompt Children’s Thinking Skills:
   1. What is a germ? Where can they be found?
   2. How can we get rid of germs?
   3. When should one was their hands?
   4. What should you do when coughing/sneezing?
Follow on Activities: Home Activities:
