Essay on Male Gaze in Vertigo
Section I
Images of Women in Film
Dr. Judith Lancioni

Male Gaze in Vertigo
Several film theorists have used a variety of tactics and view points to analyze feature films since
their inception. One of the most prominent theorists of those that analyze films from a feminist
perspective is Laura Mulvey. Mulvey is famous for her essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative
Cinema, which presents an array of theories involving the treatment of women in films. Arguably
the most notable idea presented in Mulvey s work is the existence of the male gaze in films. This
essay will examine Mulvey s theory of the male gaze in relation to Alfred Hitchcock s film,
Vertigo. Vertigo does not fit the criteria of a film that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Midge is not presented as a sexual object for Scottie in any way. In actuality, the male gaze may
be somewhat satirized in this film by the fact that Midge designs brasseries for a living, yet she
is not a sexual exploit or sexually driven at all in this film. Midge also contradicts the male gaze
because she is placed in a position of power over Scottie, as he goes to her to deal with his
vulnerabilities regarding acrophobia in the beginning of the film. Midge s position of power
over Scottie is further affirmed as she refers to herself as mother multiple times in the film. An
example is seen when Scottie mentions seeming lost in the mental hospital and Midge replies
You re not lost, Mother s here. Scottie s acceptance of this represents a castration affect not
typical to the male gaze, as well as the extremely atypical acceptance of a female in power in a
film by a lead male. This presentation of Midge in Vertigo demonstrates a variance from Mulvey
s view of female characters in accordance with the male gaze. Another scene in the movie does this
by allowing us into the mind of a female character and giving us information before even Scottie
obtains it. The aforementioned scene is a flashback that occurs after Scottie s first encounter with
Judy in her apartment. During this flashback, the viewer is exposed to Judy s actual thought
process and frame of mind. The

Grand Canyon National Park Short Report
The Grand Canyon is one of the most amazing natural wonders in the world. It was originally
deposited sediment that was lithofied, and turned into sedimentary rock. The rock was then carved
out by hydraulic processes (Warneke). These processes, all combined, took almost three to six
million years to form the Grand Canyon. Continued erosion by wind and rain in the present time
continues to shift what the canyon looks like, and make it different as time goes on ( Grand
Canyon Facts ).
This seemingly boring process came to fruition in one of the most beloved National Parks in the
United States of America. The Grand Canyon National Park is located in the state of Arizona. It is
over 270 miles long and, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it was a National Park it was still not frequently visited, and only had, approximately,
44,173 visitors a year, the first year it opened. Now it has over five million visitors every single
year. However, if it had not been for the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park might not be in
the condition it is today. In 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation
Corps as a part of his New Deal (Audretsch). On May 19, 1933 the first Civilian Conservation
Corps Company, Company 819 arrived in the Grand Canyon. They did many things for the park,
including building stone walls alongside the rim of the canyon (to protect places such as El Tovar
Hotel and Bright Angel Lodge). In addition they worked to improve the Bright Angel Trail, and
worked to landscape the Grand Canyon Village (Audretsch). It is because of their hard work that
the Community Building at the Grand Canyon exists today.
New York CityShort Report
New York City is the largest city in the United States of America. It has a population of over eight
million people (NYC.gov). However, New York City has not always been this big. It started out
undiscovered and untouched by Europeans. The first natives of New York City were the Lenape
and Algonquin people. (History.com Staff) These two native groups worked the land between the
Hudson and Delaware rivers for their food by farming and fishing (History.com Staff).

1800 s Locomotive Headlamp
The artifact shown in class is an 1800 s locomotive headlamp. The headlamp on the locomotive
had several purposes. One of the most important purposes was to make it easier for the driver to
see in front of the train and make sure they were not approaching any obstacles. The headlight
was also used to alert anyone ahead that the train was coming. There were several attempts and
prototypes of the locomotive headlamps. One that was used for some time after the civil war was
a large box that was almost two feet by two feet, with glass in the front. It was sometimes decorated
to make it more visually appealing, but it did not last. The one that became the most popular was
much smaller and round. To identify the headlamp engine numbers were stamped out of the metal

In the late 1800s many locomotive companies began using electric headlamps instead of oil
lamps. There were multiple problems that came with using the electric lights instead of oil. It
was very difficult to supply electric power when the train was in a station (Presentation
Magazine). The light was extremely bright and made it hard for the drivers of others trains to
see when they were arriving at the station. In the early 1900 s the arc lamp was invented and
made it much easier for other train drivers to see and it allowed people to safely cross. The
headlamp shown in class was made using black metal, possibly iron, with a glass plate in the
front which allows the light to pass through it. The glass is on a hinge so it could be opened and
closed. The artifact relates to what we are learning because the locomotive industry became one of
the largest and most important industries in America for a long time during and after the civil war.
The trains were used to transport supplies to the troops all throughout the war, and after the war
they were used as transportation for people. There were many investors in the trains that made huge

Liquid Chondroitin
Liquid glucosamine chondroitin is used to treat joint pain and inflammation associated with
osteoarthritis and other joint and bone conditions. So why does glucosamine and chondroitin
work so well together? They are both molecules which make up the cartilage that is found in our
joints. It is normal for cartilage to break down and repair itself however it is abnormal when the
repair stage breaks down. If glucosamine and chondroitin are not present in sufficient quantities
then repair of joint cartilage can not take place and this is what leads to osteoarthritis and other
painful joint conditions. By taking a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement, you ensure that
there is always a ready supple of the cartilage building blocks to repair your joint cartilage. What

It has also been shown that the pain relief is very similar or even the same as that experienced by
patients taking NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti inflammatory medications). The benefit of liquid
glucosamine chondroitin over NSAIDs is the lack of side effects and discomfort. There are very
few, if any, side effects to taking glucosamine and chondroitin joint supplements. There is also some
evidence that NSAID s can actually INCREASE the progression of arthritis! This is a big risk to
take if you are trying to reduce your arthritis symptoms. Glucosamine chondroitin on the other hand
can protect the cartilage leading to long term relief from arthritis symptoms. Why Liquid? Liquid is
absorbed quicker than any other form of substance that we put into our body. Short of injecting
yourself with glucosamine chondroitin, a liquid form provides the fastest possible absorption into
the bloodstream. That is why liquid glucosamine chondroitin supplements come highly
recommended from doctors and patients

Serial Killer Empathy Definition
Serial Killers, most people are curious about them. People tend to read or watch anything that
concerns serial killers. It is important to understand how serial killers become vicious
individuals. It is also important to know how their emotional state works or the lack there of
empathy. Being able to tell if empathy is something that they feel or whether it is an act through
pure psychopathy. This will be compared to crimes of passions to determine what level of
empathy or psychopathy was felt. We have a lot of information on criminals, who commit violent
crimes, but studies on serial killers is lacking. Only thing we do know is dependent upon what they
tell us during interviews (Culhane, Hilstad. Freng, and Grey 2011). By doing research focusing...

Although there are an increasingly number of literature when it comes to serial killers, but it
would appear that most of it is more based on the identification of the killer and the reasons why
he or she did it (2009). According to Bartels and Parsons, it is believed that there is a dominant
understanding of a serial killer that it has to do with a sexual fantasy role, which has to do with a
role of sexual fantasy. Fantasy is defined by Prentky et al. (1989: 889) as an elaborated set of
cognitions (thoughts) characterised by preoccupation (or rehearsal), anchored in emotions, and
originating in daydreams (Bartels and Parsons, 2009, 267 268), as well as them being involved
in cognitions or images that are sexually arousing (2009). This all goes back to an isolated sexual
murder (Bartels and Parsons, 2009, 268), in 1885, the first emphasis on sexual fantasy was in
1957 by Reinhardt. Back then is what led to the term sexual sadistic killer (Bartels and Parsons,
2009). In 1992 Ressler defined a true meaning of what s the meaning to the term serial killer, that
they have an obsession with fantasies of murder and this leads them to repeat the crimes until they
have successfully acted out these fantasies

Joyce Meyer How To Respond To Conflict Summary
How to Respond to Conflict Joyce Meyer once said, A positive attitude gives you power over
your circumstances instead of your circumstances having power over you . Throughout times
people have proven that positive thinking will help resolve a conflict. It is good to remain
positive to eventually receive a good outcome. When a conflict arises the best way to deal with it
is to keep a positive attitude. Many argue that a fight will quickly end a problem but problem but
a good example that that is false is the story of Black Ships before Troy.In black ships before Troy
they use war to solve their problems.people think that it won t really matter what attitude is

ABSTRACT There have been major changes which are witnessed in the world and at the centre is
the ever changing phase of technology, like advances in the way people communicate, do
businesses, exchange of information. At the heart of all this lies the World Wide Web and the same
has revolutionised the way people are communicating and transferring the data and information. The
best part about being that there exists no single entity or person who owns the World Wide Web
some organizations and other companies are handling the management of the system and the
administration of the World Wide Web. There has been contrasting views with respect to electronic

The banking industry also involves the practice of offering varied products which are necessary to
ensure that they are able to maintain the advantage in a highly competitive field and the
globalization has brought in different players who are vying for the same number of customers and
this forces the banks and financial institutions to look for various avenues to meet the customer
needs. However, it needs to be understood that the Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) had the most
penetration in the environment in comparison to other measures like phone banking, mobile
banking, and internet banking. There has been an exodus of offers with which the banks have
penetrated in the economy and this sea change has been made possible by the availability of
technology. However, there is a still a percentage of customers who would believe in the concept of
conventional banking in comparison to the modern banking methods which are confusing and at
times intrusive for the conventional customer who would still rely on the bricks and mortar
banking system which works on hard physical currency being transacted over the counter. (Yaha
and Laura, 1990) There are many reasons for the deep distrust towards the advancement that has
been witnessed in the technology front, like the old age people who are not adept at the system feel
that it has nothing new to offer to them. However, the

The Impact of Career Dynamics in the 21st Century
As envisaged right from the beginning, Career Dynamics in the 21st Century was meant to help
readers to either avoid scarcity mentality or help them embrace the desirable abundance mentality.
Once a critical mass of individuals is driven by the latter, it is possible to synergize and create great

Summary Of Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
Is it Worth It?
In The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, Jackson writes the story from a third person s point of view to
tell a story about this village that celebrates this annual event. The narrator tells us all these details
about the event but leaves the most important detail out until the very end. When people normally
hear the word Lottery they quickly think winning is a positive thing but for the villagers in The
Lottery winning isn t something they look forward to. Shirley Jackson s The Lottery uses irony,
foreshadowing, and symbolism to build suspense throughout the story and make the ending of the
story a realization rather than a surprise to the reader.
Every year villagers gather together in the town square to begin the annual Lottery which
everyone is required to attend. The setting is a small featureless town we re only three hundred
people lived. In other towns, it normally takes longer but in this town the lottery was finished
right before lunch. School wasn t in session so kids showed up first. The girls started
conversations amongst themselves and the boys, Bobby Martin, Harry Jones, and Dickie
Delacroix, began to pocket stones. Husbands and then wives show up after and gather their
families while waiting for Mr. Summer to arrive with the black box. Once he arrived chatter
amongst everyone died. At this point in the story everyone begins to become nervous and once the
black box is placed on the stool all the villagers make sure to keep their distance

The Albatross
The particular meaning of death is evidently endless, and with the limitless range of possibilities
that follow along with it comes with no amazement that the death scenes in literature sometimes
create the most significant themes in their relevant stories. One similar case to this would be the
death of the Albatross, in the poem The Rime of the Ancient Marinerby Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
In the poem, the Mariner carelessly shots the Albatross, guiding him and his men, without giving
any good reasons why he did so. This can be related to religion because the Albatross represents
Christ because he was our one and only option at achieving eternal life in Heaven, even after man
continued to torture him. The Albatross was the crew s one and only chance at salvation from the
icy region, but the Mariner destroys all their chances after killing the bird. His impression then
would reveal his carelessness for nature, a moment that would illuminate the logical purpose of the
poem clearer now than it did before.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He shows no regret or shame as it falls out of the sky, along with no explanation for his
disgusting doing. The Mariner continues to tell his story as if he hadn t known what horrible
thing he had done. Later the spirit of the Albatross would come back and avenge its death by
cursing the mariner and his crew. After all his crew members have died is when he starts to
appear sorrowful and begins to pray not for help, but for God to take him also. At this point of the
story, the fate of the mariner lies in the hands of the spirits. Miraculously, he makes it back to his
home country and is acknowledged by a Hermit who helps him with his

Empathy is a respectful understanding of what others are experiencing. Instead of offering
empathy, we often have a strong urge to give advice or reassurance and to explain our own
position or feeling. Empathy, however, calls upon us to empty our mind and listen to others with

Makeup Of Makeup
Samuel Pepys did make note of the heavy makeup used by Nell Gwynne and her co worker Mrs.
Knepp on stage, and how frightful he found it, so it is likely that even if makeup, in general, had
an artificial look, stage makeup went a few steps further. Red cheeks connoted youthfulness and
health, yellow cheeks age and illness. The eyes were outlined with black and shaded with
colored pigment, blue being quite popular. Hair powder was used on the stage as well, and the
color of it could be used either to compliment the actor or actress s look, or be chosen to suit the
character they played. False facial hair was another means to change an actor s look. Makeup in
the 17th and 18th century was quite simple, but with a very artificial look. The ideal, for both men
and women, was a pale face, enhanced with cosmetics aimed to lighten the complexion or with
white makeup. As with the lips, there is no real evidence that brows were blotted out and repainted
higher up on the brow, though that may have happened in the theatre for effect. Patches were very
popular throughout both the 17th and 18th century, most commonly round and black made out of
taffeta, velvet or paper, but larger and more elaborate shapes were also in use (Samuel Pepysdiary).
Theatre goers also enjoyed seeing women in breeches roles in which a female character disguised
herself as a man by wearing tight pants that exposed their legs. Breeches roles are found in plays
from the 1660s, such as Nell Gwyn as Florimel

The American people play a factor into why the US is falling short of its democratic ideals.
There are people who are losing their moral values and social media is a vital factor as to why
people have been encouraged to the loss of moral values. It is very simple and easy for one to

example, political leader Donald Trump uses Twitter as a place to share his thoughts, and

.A music producer oversees the production and development of songs, whether they are bringing
together instrumental and vocal elements for sound mixing or ensuring that the people involved
hold a singular vision for that song s success. While there s no formal education required for this
career, it is strongly recommended individuals pursue a 4 year bachelor s degree in music

Beauty and the Geek
Watching television is one of usually pastimes for people, especially watching reality television.
According to the Oxford dictionary reality television is a television programs in which real people
are continuously filmed, designed to be entertaining rather than informative (Oxford). Beauty and
the Geekpairs together Geeks (socially inelegant nerd breeds) and Beauties (beautiful women
handpicked for depicting bimbos), who then take on challenges. Each week one couple is forced to
leave the house and the last remaining couple wins $250,000 in prizes. Along the way the geeks are
renovated, and the beauties learn various things about geek culture. Beauty and the geek amplifies a
negative stereotypeof men and women enforced by pairing smart, nerdy men with women focused
on looks.
By asking the women carefully selected questions, they are made to look ditzy enforcing the
negative stereotype. Before the beauties were chosen for the show they were interviewed, taped
and further asked a few uncomplicated questions but to them were quite complex for they looked
confused and puzzled after being questioned. Sim Ahmed talks about when the producers were
scouting for beauties, they looked for several things: Gorgeous women that were preened and
ready to take center stage, but ask their opinion on politics, the solution to a mathematical equation,
or how to reboot a hard drive and they ll be stumped (Ahmed). Nadia Underwood was asked in her
interview, what weighs more? A

Relationship Between The And The Senate
Relationship with the Senate:
At this point, Octavius practically ruled all of Rome and its assets with the support of his military.
Octavius now had only to gain the affection and trust of the people, so he masked his great power
by establishing a new system of government while maintaining Roman traditions and befriending
the Senate. On the other hand, the Senate had grown accustomed to, and benefited from, having
Octavius in command, and the fact that the government system of the old Republic had crumbled
in failure gave the Senate a reason to keep Octavius in office.
Octavius knew that his rise to absolute power would be delivered to him gradually and that, in
order to fully and effectively implement his complex plans into Roman society, a continuous
office as Proconsul would not be sufficient. With this in mind, Octavius proceeded methodically
and with tact. He justified any of his actions by claiming that it was for the greater good of the
Republic of Rome so that no one would see fit to usurp his power, whether that be by legal means
or by assassination. He promised that he would bring back the customs of Rome s ancestors, and in
January 27 B.C., he announced that he would be returning humbly his power over Rome back to
the Senate and the people of Rome. Although he had just sacrificed a significant amount of power,
Augustus knew that he still had the back up support of soldiers and war veterans if the situation
turned dire.
In response, the Senate

History Of Capital One Financial Corporation
I also chose Capital One Financial Corporation. I chose this because i use this bank myself and
wanted to learn more about it as it seemed to be very successful and a possible good investment.
Capital One s (COF) history is shorter than different banks. It was founded in 1994. This was
when Signet Financial Corp. branched its credit card business into a different section named
Capital One. The new corporation was led by Richard Fairbank. Capital One was a monoline
credit card organization in the mid 1990s. Capital One constructed a solid credit card business.
This procedure paid off but if the credit card business were to decline it would mean disaster for

High Risk Family Assessment and Health Promotion Assessing health needs is a fundamental
nursing skill. Unfortunately, many nurses only associate the assessment process to the individual
patient they are caring for and fail to assess and address the needs of the entire family. Performing
a family assessment is vital, especially when working with high risk individuals and groups. High
risk families can be defined as those families with a higher than expected risk for developing a

To compound the issue, often the affected veteranwill turn to high risk behaviors in an attempt to
find resolution or relief including smoking, social isolation, abuse of alcohol and drugs, and the

In a domino effect, the high risk behavior frequently leads to unemployment, habitual drug or
alcohol use, poor or absent parenting, fractured family units, unsafe sex, participation in dangerous
sports or driving, and in some instances, suicide. Last, stress along with the indulgence of smoking
and the consumption of alcohol and drugs can also lead to chronic health issues including
hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pulmonary disease, and digestive disorders.
Assessment and Theory Application Effective treatment of PTSD can only take place if the
disorder is recognized. Symptoms of PTSD are commonly divided into three defining sections: (1)
reliving the traumatic event, (2) detachment and avoidance, and (3) exaggerated responses (NCBI,
2010). When a patient relives the traumatic event, it occurs in a manner in which it interferes with
the normal process of daily life. This can include recurring flashbacks or dreams and distressing
memories, which manifest negative physical reactions. Detachment and avoidance is demonstrated
through loss of interest in current living situation, avoidance of people or places that may

My Major At Nicholls State University
SELF EXPLORATION
My major at Nicholls State University is Mathematics with a concentration in Computer Science;
however, I plan to transfer to University of Louisiana at Lafayette to pursue a degree in Physics.
The process in which one would solve a problem has always appealed to me. In math, specifically
calculus, derivatives tell me how the original function acts and integrals tell me the relevance of the
original function to the x axis. Using a simple formula to find the answer to a seemingly impossible
problem that involves numbers that geniuses have discovered centuries ago is the most amazing
thing one could possibly do, in my opinion. Also, upon taking my computer science course, I have
learned how to write certain scripts. Writing these scripts has taught me of a connection between
the person and the computer; sort of like a collaboration.
Ten years from now, I can see myself finally being self sufficient; drinking tea in my own
apartment while watching TV and petting my kitty cat. Career wise, I want to work in an office
probably creating a new way to solve some sort of problem. I could see myself in the
astrophysics, computer science, or mathematics field. When I was younger, my dad and I would

his back and flip over his head or, land on earth. That s when I knew I wanted to work in an area

The speaker using imagery in this poem reveals to us that the juggler is a talented individual.
Also, the narrator uses a lot of detail to describe what the juggler is doing. The readers can

imagery they see. He starts off juggling five red balls. He then switches to a plate, a broom and

author uses detail to let the readers see what the juggler is doing. The author uses detail to show
the readers a clearer picture about the juggler and how talented he is. The speaker is amused by
the juggler s talent. The speaker reveals this by telling the readers in full detail about what the

Declaration of Sentiments by Elizabeth Cady
Over the course of many years, women have struggled to expand their roles and rights in society,
hoping to one day achieve complete equality with their male counterparts. Two women, Elizabeth
Cady Stanton and Judy (Syfers) Brady, both recognized the patriarchal society in which women had
to endure. They despised the way it heaped inequality and servitude upon women, and decided to
assert their opinion on the issue in order to change the perceptions and imposed limitations on
women. In Stanton s speech, Declaration of Sentiments, and in Brady s article, I Want a Wife , both
women attempt to convince their audiences that females deserve complete equality with men by
stating the submissive situations and obligations women find themselves immersed in. This is done
to get their female audiences to reevaluate how they have been treated and give them a second
chance at attaining equality. Both women employ various rhetorical techniques in their arguments
to strengthen, as well as compel other women to oppose the domesticated image of women.
Elizabeth Cady Stantonand Judy (Syfers) Brady expressed their views in pursuance of forging a
path to a revamped lifestyle for women. In Judy (Syfers) Brady s article, I Want a Wife , she
expresses her opinions in a satirical commentary that offers hypothetical criteria for an ideal wife,
with an underlying message that deals with how people should be grateful for all of the deeds and
chores that women do. Brady utilizes the strategy of

C. Commentary: Discuss the central issue addressed in each reading. Explain the relationship
among the different perspectives taken on developing reading competence in each of the readings.
What conclusions might be drawn about the challenges in facilitating literacy for urban and other
underserved students? What approaches might best serve the needs of these students?
Shanahan (2011) makes an excellent point that for each discipline there should be a different way
of ensuring that learning is taking place. Not all disciplines are the same, so their approaches
should be different as well. If students struggle with history they may also struggle with English if
they are taught the same way. Learning goals and strategies vary by class and so should teaching
method and delivery. The points in this article should be taken into consideration when teachers
create lesson plans.
Taylor (2003) et al. in this study investigated the effects of teaching on students reading
achievement. If students are tested repeatedly via assessment and homework over the same topic
they will lose interest and momentum. Taylor makes a point of showing educators that higher order

Philip Zimbardo s The Lucifer Effect
The Lucifer Effect
In The Lucifer Effect, Philip Zimbardo asks, What happens when good people are put into an evil
place? Do they triumph or does the situation dominate their past history and morality? The
questions, ideas, and underlying psychology that Zimbardo covers in this novel relate to our AP
Psychology class in great amounts. The book talks about an experiment we discussed in class,
social psychology, and how certain situations can affect an individual s personality. First, this book
includes a full and detailed storyline of the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment. We watched a
section of this experiment when learning about ethics in experimentation. It is obvious that this

The theory is that people are not inherently evil, but can easily become evil if put in the right
situation and if the operation of the situation allows it. This relates to the fundamental
attribution error that we discussed in class. Many people do not think of how much the situation
of an event plays into what happened. They rely too heavily on personality. Therefor, if someone
acts cruelty, they are just a cruel person. However, that may not necessarily be the case.
Zimbardo uses Abu Ghraib as a perfect example of this. The soldiers that heinous acts or torture
were previously seen as good eggs. They were not bad people. However, a situation arose where
they received power, and the operation that allowed them to have that power also let it become
corrupt. This is also shown in the Stanford Prison Experiment. When given the role of a prison
guard, an individual must think of how a guard would act. They then try to act accordingly, even if
this may cause cognitive dissonance. They saw the situation and decided that they needed to be
dominate and authoritative. As was seen however, this can quickly get out of hand. At Stanford, the
students go from insults to torture as Zimbardo describes. Anonymity also plays a lead role in these
situations. If a person is in a situation where they are anonymous, their actions could very well

Conditions in these were terrible, Most people had no lights or any air. They were overcrowded.

Religion In Colonial Philadelphia
Based on the physical evidence found on the tour of Philadelphia, we can draw that colonial
Philadelphians valued religion greatly, they had advanced architecture and infrastructure, and they
carried out very modest attitudes. Some of the most historical figures came from and benefitted the
city of Philadelphia including Benjamin Franklin and Andrew Hamilton. In Philadelphia during the
eighteenth century, faith was the top priority for most of the city s population. There were many
Quakers inhabiting Philadelphia at the time. The first legal Catholic Church was established in the
colonial city in 1773. The first stop on the tour and a very important colonial landmark was the
Christ Church in Philadelphia. The Christ Church was the tallest building in British North
America in 1776. Some of the most important historical figures were memorialized at the church
such as Andrew Hamilton, who was responsible for establishing freedom of the press in America.
At that time, practicing Catholicism was frowned upon and people were killed for doing so.

Non Verbal And Verbal Communication
Communication is important in any industry. There are many forms of communication and it is
constantly evolving. One such field that communication is important in is physical therapy. There
is constant interaction between patients, physical therapists, physical therapists assistants, other
employees, other health professionals, etc. This report will look at communicationwithin different
levels of employment, non verbal and verbal communication, communication impacted by the
audience, technology, interpersonal skills, and feedback.
First and foremost is non verbal communication. The very first impression you have of someone is
their physical appearance. Nonverbal communication plays a large role in the dynamics of how
people relate to one another in the workplace (Perkins, 2010). It is important for workers in the
physical therapy profession to dress appropriately and show confidence. When working with
patients there is a lot to consider. What type of message do you send, consciously and
unconsciously, in the way you dress, your facial expression, your greeting rituals, your displays of
emotion, your gestures, your tone of voice, or your use of space? (Perkins, 2010, p. 51). It is
important to consider all these because the patient wants to know and feel they are in good hands.
Nonverbal communication is also important within the work area. Employers want to know they
can trust their employees especially with patients. An individual also wants to get along with their

just different terminology. In Montana, the Champion International Corp. went on a tree

Light And Darkness In Macbeth Essay
Throughout the play of Macbeth, the aura of darkness and horror is often presented to the audience
in order to give the atmosphere within the play a dark and tragic tone. In the play, the nature of evil
was the theme used by the Shakespeare in Macbeth. He used certain action filled images to
introduce deception and horror throughout the play. The characters in Macbethoften brought about
the images of blood, darkness, and evil. Many scenes in the play gave the audience hints of
occurring supernaturalevents, which in the end would lead to the fall of many, like Macbeth, who
was nothing more than a man full of ambitions that showed no respect for the lives of others.

The Diagram Above Shows Recreation, Sports, Tourism, And...
The diagram above shows recreation, leisure, sports, tourism, and parks as being interconnected,
with each possibly depending on each other for success. Recreation refers to an activity that in
individual participates in with a structured timeframe (Introduction, 2013, p. 4). Leisure has
multiple meanings, one being Unobligated time, state of being, and consumption patterns, in
addition to occurring outside of working life (Introduction, 2013, p. 4). Sport occurs during leisure
time, either as an active participant or as a spectator. Tourism refers to travel, particularly away
from home for a specific period of time. Parks are protected lands that are available for the
utilization of the public. Again, the diagram shows how each of these concepts may overlap. Yet,
even though these concepts can connect and overlap they can also exist individually.
The parks offer a place for leisure, recreation, sport, and tourism to take place. Some travel for the
sole purpose of touring our country s national parks and monuments during their leisure time. They
may choose this recreational activity to improve overall health and wellbeing, while also expanding

because too much can make the water warmer than it should be. Landfills urban runoff, ocean
dumpsites, ocean vessels and the dumping of fossil fuel are just a few of the pathways that lead
to the oceans(Calhoun 109). All these pathways to pollution are making it unsafe for marine life
to be in the water. The release of other chemical nutrients into the ocean s ecosystem leads to
reductions in oxygen levels, the decay of plant life, a severe decline in the quality of the
seawater itself(causes and effects). The less oxygen there is in the water, the harder it will be for
marine life to breathe and the harder it will be for plants to grow. Sewage or polluting substances
flow through rivers or drainages directly into the ocean(causes and effects). The sewage harms
animals in the

Essay On Texas Elections
Texas Elections When it is around time for elections, signs around the neighborhood will start
appearing to tell people to vote for them. This occurs mainly around the time of the primaries. The
primaries occur every even year and they exist to elect state positions. Meaning who represents
someone in the districts may change drastically or stay about the same. In simplest terms, the
primary electionexists to narrow down the amount of people running in the general election.
Sometimes if the results are too close, a runoff will occur in between the primary and general
election. 23 of these have yet to happen. The 2018 Texas primaries happened earlier this year on
March 6th and the results have been released. The voter turnout, the results,... Show more content

The information bellow comes from a website called The Texas Tribune which shows the results
of all positions. To start off the U.S senate position was a land slide. On the republican side Ted
Cruz got 85% while the other republican candidates got less than 10 percent. The democratic
side had similar results; Beto O Rourke got 60 percent while the other candidates got less than
30. For the U.S house, Louie Gohmert (republican) got 88.3 percent and Shirley J. McKellar got
61 percent. Not very many went for the comptroller position, in fact for republicans Glenn Hegar
was the only one who ran. Only 2 ran on the democratic side and Joi Chevalier had 51.9 percent
of the votes. For the Governor position Greg abbot got 90 percent and Lupe Valdez got 40
percent. The lieutenant position also did not have very many runners; 2 voted on each side. The
lead for democratic was Mike Collier with 52.4 percent; the lead for the republican was Dan
Patrick with 76.0 percent. For the agriculture commissioner no one ran except for Kim Olson,
and the republican who won was Sid Miller with 55.8 percent. There were a few district positions
that ended up having a runoff. District 3, district 5, district 7 are just a few examples of many.
There are other positions that went for running that are not listed here such as railroad
commissioner and the district positions. One interesting fact of the election is a lot more females

Effect Of Emulsifier On Ice Cream
In this experiment, we would like to prepare ice cream by using milk, cream, sucrose, stabilizer
and emulsifier. We will prepare ice cream by using two sets of formula. Group B1 and B2 will
add the emulsifier into their ice cream whereas group B3 and B4 do not add any emulsifier into
ice cream. In this experiment, our group (B3) will prepare the ice cream without adding
emulsifier. Therefore, we can study the effect of adding emulsifier on the ice cream. Firstly, we
will mix the ingredients in the orderly manner by using high speed mixer. The stabilizer is not
added in this step, it is added only during pasteurization process. After mixing, we will carry out
pasteurization process. This step is conducted by heating the ice cream mix at 71oC... Show more

The mouth coating is affected by three dimensional network structures of air cells. Emulsifier
can provide semblance of richness sensation of mouth coating by contributing to a formation of
small, uniformly dispersed air cell and protects against texture deterioration due to heat shock.
(Clark, Costello, Drake, Bodyfelt, 2009). We also study the defects present in our ice cream.
Based on table 5, both ice cream with and without emulsifier have defects in its flavor. Both ice
cream taste too sweet. This is due to imbalance of the ingredients used during ice cream making.
This defects can be overcome by reduce the amount of sucrose used. For defects in body, ice
cream with emulsifier has gummy body. It is an indication of pasty and sticky body. This is
probably due to over stabilization, very high solid content and low overrun. Excessive stabilizer
and sucrose content will contribute to this defect. For the ice cream without emulsifier, it has a
heavy body. It is indication of soggy, doughy and putty like body. The factor causing this defect
is almost same as gummy body which is high total solid, over stabilization and low overrun.
Therefore, we can overcome both defects by reducing amount of stabilizer and sucrose as well as
incorporate more air into ice cream mix during freezing

Security In Macbeth
When individuals are given a small amount of security, the temptation to overstep that small amount
of security for more power can clog your mind. In the play Macbeth by WIlliam Shakespeare, the
protagonist Macbeth was given a small amount of security that was abused. Macbeth was given a
small amount of security by the witches, then he put blind trust into them without any kind of
backup plan. When Macbethoverstepped the security that was given to him, he did not realized it
and was blinded by his ambition, that ultimately lead to more power and more ambition. In result of
his temptation, Macbeth went to utmost lengths to ensure that he would not lose the crown, but in
the end, his efforts were for nothing. Shakespeare is saying that when individuals are tempted by
power, or that their ambitions are to high, they do not consider the consequences that come if you
take that temptation. Initially when people are given a small amount of security, they are tempted
to take more than... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Macbeth being naive, trusted his security 100% without question and in result of this action he
tried to maintain his power by killing or getting rid of anyone that threatened his throne. When
the witches told macbeth that he will be the king, but also Duncan s sons, he murdered Duncan
and the sons (Malcolm and Donalbain) fled in fear of them also being murdered. When Macbeth
saw Banquo as a threat, he had 3 murderers try to assassinate Banquo and his son Fleance .
Banquo was killed and his Fleance escaped. Finally when the witches gave Macbeth the advice to
Beware Macduff the thane of fife, he Murdered his family. Macbeth s being paranoid and not
thinking would kill anyone that ever posed even the a minuscule threat to his power. This is
because he would need to be 100% confident with his security, but as the witches have stated And
you all know security is mortals chiefest enemy.

From the Large-Scale Universe to the Milky Way
Cosmology is the study of the universe, everything from the largest galaxies to the smallest atom. It
attempts to answer the question, How does the universe work? , by looking at everything in the
universe and working to understand it. Cosmology has always been studied, however in the last 20
years, technology has given scientists new information and allowed for an increasing knowledge of
the structure and history of the universewith the ultimate goal of finding a theory that can explain
everything. The Copernican Revolution was the beginning of modern cosmology. It was the time
when the geocentric model of the solar system was disproved, opening up the possibilities that
explained the universe. Newton s Laws provided another piece of the cosmology puzzle and gave
today s scientists the laws they must work with to explain the universe. Albert Einstein provided
yet another theory the universe must operate on, giving scientists even more boundaries for
whatever discoveries they make. With the modern addition of advanced telescopes, today s
scientists are able to explain the vastness of the universe, as well as how galaxies, stars, planets, and
all the other matter that makes up the universe. The Big Bangtheory explains how the universe
came to be. Before the Big Bang, there was nothing. After, there was something. 14 billion years
ago, a massive expansion began, creating all the matter necessary for the universe to exist today. It
was an extremely dense, hot, tiny

Analysis Of Lemony Snicket s Series Of Unfortunate Events
Reader Response
I first read Lemony Snicket s Series of Unfortunate Events when I was 10 years old. Having little
patience, I planned to just skim through but found myself immediately immersed in the story and
the writing style. The author uses clever techniques to appeal to both children and older readers,
which allowed me to remain engaged with the text. Snicket warns that, if you are interested in
books with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book. I found myself
attracted to the gothic elements and darker nature of the text. I found it to be uniquely different to
the traditional fairy tales with a clichГ© happily ever after . A Series of Unfortunate Eventshas no
typical happily ever after, but the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a child, I often felt frustrated that adults would not always take me seriously. I felt empowered
by the idea that perhaps I too was capable of solving my own problems as a self reliant and
independent being.
Snicket is a clever and humorous narrator. He assists the reader with more advanced words,
explaining them in their given context. As a young reader, this was very educational and helpful
and allowed me to further understand and enjoy the series. As an older reader, I came to realise
that he did this in a comedic way. For example, Snicket writes, It is now necessary for me to use
the rather hackneyed phrase meanwhile, back at the ranch. The word hackneyed here means used
by so, so many writers that by the time Lemony Snicket uses it, it is a tiresome clichГ©. Snicket
also introduces children to important concepts and ideas. He notes, your initial opinion of things
may change over time, and the children knew, as I m sure you know, that the worst surroundings
can be tolerated if the people in them are interesting and kind. He also addressed more serious
issues, acting as a moral guide, but ensured these issues were not too overwhelming by
maintaining a sense of humour. He writes, stealing is not excusable if, for instance, you are in a
museum and you decide that a certain painting would look better in your house... But if you were
very very hungry, and you had no way of obtaining money, it might be excusable to grab the
painting, take it

Music Is It s An Explosive Expression Of Humanity
I think music in itself is healing. It s an explosive expression of humanity. It s something we are
all touched by. No matter what culture we re from, everyone loves music. Billy Joel was right
when he identified the best qualities of music; however, there are some problems caused by
music as well. I personally think music is the number one societal problem in the world. This
whole world is in love with music, including myself. Music is the number one thing people listen
to when they are feeling sad or happy. More than one million songs are being produced every year.
Regardless of whether the music is good or bad. Today we have all types of music: country music,
gospel music, R B music, Pop music, and Hip Hop music. The music we listen to is not all that
terrible, like gospel music because it is decent music with no profanity.
Some types of music are not good for the mind, even though they may take away the pain away.
However, negative music can also cause life problems. Life is already hard itself on everyone.
Depending on where life takes you and what mood you re in. The mood will determine the
music you listen to, so it fits your state of mind. I ask myself, why do songwriters, and singers
create such music? Is it because of what they were introduced to in life or the lyrics was a part of
them. Meaning growing up in a bad environment. If you re a songwriter and you know yourself
that there are millions of fans following you. You already have them liking who you

The Pros And Cons Of Open Border Policy
Modern day America has put strict boundaries on immigration, but during the 18th and 19th
centuries, an open immigration policy was encouraged and accepted. The concept of America as
the land of dreamers and new beginnings is now lost due to recent border policies. An open border
policy should be implemented in America as it upholds the Constitution, benefits the domestic and
international economy, and maintains ethical standards for preserving human life.
Border restrictions and confinements on migration put the very principles of the constitution at
stake. Many proponents of closed borders utilize the Constitution s Foreign Commerce Clause ,
located in Article 1, to support their argument that Congress has been granted power over migration.
According to Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University, the clause supposedly gives
Congress control over migration and border policies. Despite this supposition, the Foreign
Commerce Clause is merely the realization of its name: it only grants Congress power over
commerce between foreign entities. The term commerce implies economic transactions and
consequently the movement of commodities, in this case, international movement of commodities.
While manual labor can be considered a commodity, immigration itself is not only the movement of
manual labor. Immigration is the motion of hope and humanity, a movement in pursuit of the
American dream. This may be represented in manual labor, but immigration is not only that, it

Myrtle Wilson Thesis
Is Myrtle Wilson the antithesis of Daisy Buchanan? Fitzgerald presents Myrtle and Daisy in
similar but different ways. For example, Fitzgerald presents them though they re appearance,
behaviour, how they perceive themselves and how others perceive them. Fitzgerald presents
Myrtle s appearance through light imagery suggesting she is a thickish figure of a woman
blocking out the light the lexes thickish figure suggest that Myrtle gives off a sensual ambience,
this also suggests that Myrtle is quite broad and blocks out the light . Oppositely Fitzgerald
presents Daisy as cool as their white dresses this demonstrates that daisy s appearance is light

Why Is Individuality Important
In a time like the 21st century, individuality is especially important. Everywhere you go there s a
person that s trying to either be themselves or they re trying to be like someone else. Everyone
has her own sense of uniqueness, some people either keep it to themselves, or they like to make it
known that they are different. Individuality is the genre of music you like, it s the hobbies you like
to do in your free time, it s the little thingsyou do that define who you are. Finding your personal
individuality is a part of life. Throughout life you have been surrounded by things that will shape
who you are and those thing will help determine who you will become to be.
It is important to express your selfness. In order to do that you must be comfortable with who
you are and you must accept the fact that you are unlike anyone else. This isn t a bad thing at all.
Recently, I learned to embrace who I am. Before then, I was very insecure and quiet. I had to

Some people think that being yourself is a bad excuse to be selfish and to not conform to
society. Personally I think that establishing your individuality is important to do because people
need to express who they are and not try to be like each other. For example, I rap and in order to
gain fans I try to distinguish myself from other rappers on Soundcloud because if not, no one will
want to make music with me which will make it even harder to become known. Growing up as a
kid I didn t exactly fit in with all the other popular kids. As i got older it meant more to me to be
who I am. Come to find out i fit in more if i was just myself. I realized that I m not that different
from other people because some people are just as weird as me. That s when I realized individuality
is something to not be ashamed of. No two people are exactly alike and I feel that it s a part of life
to find that

Essay about The Americanization Of Canada
When the topic of Canada comes up among peoples, immediately the thought of ice hockey, the
Mounted Police, and beavers comes to mind. In fact, Canada has truly lost its true identity that we
once knew. It is slowly being assimilated and in fact Americanized ; in aspects of social identity,
national identity, and cultural identity.
First, Canada is being slowly Americanized ; in its social identity. When we talk about a country s
social identity, we examine a few areas. First is the media, which is constantly bombarding
Canadians with images and values of American culture. Through the images we see Americans
constantly fighting, either in aspects of global policing in their own backyard with Americans
killing Americans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First thought that comes to most peoples minds is that of the mounted police, beavers, ice hockey,
and wide land mass. In fact, our national identity has been brought about by the American way of
life. This buying spree essentially started when Walt Disney purchased the Mounted Police s
image o it could be displayed in the Ebcot center. The most powerful, stunning uniform is to be
adorned by some no account, flag waving, hillbilly yokel. Another national image wh8ich spans
all three topics of social, natural and cultural is that of Tim Horton s. The one place where we
all go almost every day, has been bought by an American, Dave Thomas. The image of hockey is
distorted as well for there are 28 teams in the NHL, and only 6 of those teams are based in
Canada. That means that Canada only has 21% of what is considered to be a national sport. The
government image is distorted in the Canadians mind as well. All of the American s television
shows and news would have some Canadians believe that our governments work the same, and all
courts operate in the same way as Judge Judy s and the People s Court. In summary, not only are
Canadians loosing the social identity but their national identity as well.
Third, not only is the Americanization of Canada taking place through the social and national
identities, but also through cultural identities. Canada is viewed as a mosaic and not a melting pot
such as in the States

Essay on The History of the Guitar
The Guitar is a stringed musical instrument with six or twelve strings that is played by either
plucking or strumming the strings. It is one of the most popular instruments in the world. If an
individual were asked to identify a guitar most people would answer the question correctly more so
than they would if they were asked about another instrument. When people think about famous
guitarists, they more than likely think of famous rock and roll guitarists and do not think about the
many other famous guitarists in other musical genres such as jazz or country. The guitaris a well
known instrument that influences many musical genres including Country. The origins of the
guitar can be traced back to the Arabic oud. The Arabic oud is stringed... Show more content on

The Guittern was shaped like a violin, played with a pick, and had the ability to be tuned in octaves
or in unison. This tuning ability was never used in other guitar instruments. Compared to the
modern day guitar, the Guittern lacked a movable bridge and a saddle. The Guittern was also the
first instrument to use wire strings instead the traditional gut strings used in stringed instruments
(Kentor Michael 4).
After the Guittern, the guitar s structure stayed the same and had little changes. One of the slightly
improved guitars was called the Ghitarra Battente. The Ghitarra Battente was the first guitarlike
instrument to use a saddle, a movable bridge, and led the trend towards metal frets (4). The
Ghitarra Battente helped the popularity of the guitar grow tremendously. This instrument somewhat
slowed down the development and improvements to the guitar until the 1500s. In the 1500s, the
Vinuhela de Mano was introduced to the world. The Vinuhela de Mano is the the largest guitar to
date and set the size for the modern guitar. This instrument had several soundholes on the top of
the guitar, was played using a pick, and used gut strings. The Vihuela de Mano resembles the
modern twelve stringed guitars. The first publication of music for the guitar was published in 1564
and was called Tres Libros de Musica en Cifras para Vihuela. After the Vihuela de Mano, many
forms of the guitar emerged that improved the structure of the

  • 2. Essay on Male Gaze in Vertigo Section I Images of Women in Film Dr. Judith Lancioni 07, February 2012 Male Gaze in Vertigo Several film theorists have used a variety of tactics and view points to analyze feature films since their inception. One of the most prominent theorists of those that analyze films from a feminist perspective is Laura Mulvey. Mulvey is famous for her essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, which presents an array of theories involving the treatment of women in films. Arguably the most notable idea presented in Mulvey s work is the existence of the male gaze in films. This essay will examine Mulvey s theory of the male gaze in relation to Alfred Hitchcock s film, Vertigo. Vertigo does not fit the criteria of a film that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Midge is not presented as a sexual object for Scottie in any way. In actuality, the male gaze may be somewhat satirized in this film by the fact that Midge designs brasseries for a living, yet she is not a sexual exploit or sexually driven at all in this film. Midge also contradicts the male gaze because she is placed in a position of power over Scottie, as he goes to her to deal with his vulnerabilities regarding acrophobia in the beginning of the film. Midge s position of power over Scottie is further affirmed as she refers to herself as mother multiple times in the film. An example is seen when Scottie mentions seeming lost in the mental hospital and Midge replies You re not lost, Mother s here. Scottie s acceptance of this represents a castration affect not typical to the male gaze, as well as the extremely atypical acceptance of a female in power in a film by a lead male. This presentation of Midge in Vertigo demonstrates a variance from Mulvey s view of female characters in accordance with the male gaze. Another scene in the movie does this by allowing us into the mind of a female character and giving us information before even Scottie obtains it. The aforementioned scene is a flashback that occurs after Scottie s first encounter with Judy in her apartment. During this flashback, the viewer is exposed to Judy s actual thought process and frame of mind. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Grand Canyon National Park, New York City, and the... Grand Canyon National Park Short Report The Grand Canyon is one of the most amazing natural wonders in the world. It was originally deposited sediment that was lithofied, and turned into sedimentary rock. The rock was then carved out by hydraulic processes (Warneke). These processes, all combined, took almost three to six million years to form the Grand Canyon. Continued erosion by wind and rain in the present time continues to shift what the canyon looks like, and make it different as time goes on ( Grand Canyon Facts ). This seemingly boring process came to fruition in one of the most beloved National Parks in the United States of America. The Grand Canyon National Park is located in the state of Arizona. It is over 270 miles long and, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although it was a National Park it was still not frequently visited, and only had, approximately, 44,173 visitors a year, the first year it opened. Now it has over five million visitors every single year. However, if it had not been for the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park might not be in the condition it is today. In 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps as a part of his New Deal (Audretsch). On May 19, 1933 the first Civilian Conservation Corps Company, Company 819 arrived in the Grand Canyon. They did many things for the park, including building stone walls alongside the rim of the canyon (to protect places such as El Tovar Hotel and Bright Angel Lodge). In addition they worked to improve the Bright Angel Trail, and worked to landscape the Grand Canyon Village (Audretsch). It is because of their hard work that the Community Building at the Grand Canyon exists today. New York CityShort Report New York City is the largest city in the United States of America. It has a population of over eight million people (NYC.gov). However, New York City has not always been this big. It started out undiscovered and untouched by Europeans. The first natives of New York City were the Lenape and Algonquin people. (History.com Staff) These two native groups worked the land between the Hudson and Delaware rivers for their food by farming and fishing (History.com Staff). However, at the beginning of ... One of the most important purposes was to make it easier for the driver to see in front of the train and make sure they were not approaching any obstacles. The headlight was also used to alert anyone ahead that the train was coming. There were several attempts and prototypes of the locomotive headlamps. One that was used for some time after the civil war was a large box that was almost two feet by two feet, with glass in the front. In the late 1800s many locomotive companies began using electric headlamps instead of oil lamps. There were multiple problems that came with using the electric lights instead of oil. It was very difficult to supply electric power when the train was in a station (Presentation Magazine). The light was extremely bright and made it hard for the drivers of others trains to see when they were arriving at the station. In the early 1900 s the arc lamp was invented and made it much easier for other train drivers to see and it allowed people to safely cross. The headlamp shown in class was made using black metal, possibly iron, with a glass plate in the front which allows the light to pass through it. The glass is on a hinge so it could be opened and closed. Although there are an increasingly number of literature when it comes to serial killers, but it would appear that most of it is more based on the identification of the killer and the reasons why he or she did it (2009). According to Bartels and Parsons, it is believed that there is a dominant understanding of a serial killer that it has to do with a sexual fantasy role, which has to do with a role of sexual fantasy. Fantasy is defined by Prentky et al. (1989: 889) as an elaborated set of cognitions (thoughts) characterised by preoccupation (or rehearsal), anchored in emotions, and originating in daydreams (Bartels and Parsons, 2009, 267 268), as well as them being involved in cognitions or images that are sexually arousing (2009). This all goes back to an isolated sexual murder (Bartels and Parsons, 2009, 268), in 1885, the first emphasis on sexual fantasy was in 1957 by Reinhardt. In The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, Jackson writes the story from a third person s point of view to tell a story about this village that celebrates this annual event. The narrator tells us all these details about the event but leaves the most important detail out until the very end. When people normally hear the word Lottery they quickly think winning is a positive thing but for the villagers in The Lottery winning isn t something they look forward to. Shirley Jackson s The Lottery uses irony, foreshadowing, and symbolism to build suspense throughout the story and make the ending of the story a realization rather than a surprise to the reader. Every year villagers gather together in the town square to begin the annual Lottery which everyone is required to attend. The setting is a small featureless town we re only three hundred people lived. In other towns, it normally takes longer but in this town the lottery was finished right before lunch. • 14. The Albatross The particular meaning of death is evidently endless, and with the limitless range of possibilities that follow along with it comes with no amazement that the death scenes in literature sometimes create the most significant themes in their relevant stories. One similar case to this would be the death of the Albatross, in the poem The Rime of the Ancient Marinerby Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In the poem, the Mariner carelessly shots the Albatross, guiding him and his men, without giving any good reasons why he did so. This can be related to religion because the Albatross represents Christ because he was our one and only option at achieving eternal life in Heaven, even after man continued to torture him. The Albatross was the crew s one and only chance at salvation from the icy region, but the Mariner destroys all their chances after killing the bird. Makeup Of Makeup Samuel Pepys did make note of the heavy makeup used by Nell Gwynne and her co worker Mrs. Knepp on stage, and how frightful he found it, so it is likely that even if makeup, in general, had an artificial look, stage makeup went a few steps further. Red cheeks connoted youthfulness and health, yellow cheeks age and illness. The eyes were outlined with black and shaded with colored pigment, blue being quite popular. Hair powder was used on the stage as well, and the color of it could be used either to compliment the actor or actress s look, or be chosen to suit the character they played. False facial hair was another means to change an actor s look. Makeup in the 17th and 18th century was quite simple, but with a very artificial look. The ideal, for both men and women, was a pale face, enhanced with cosmetics aimed to lighten the complexion or with white makeup. As with the lips, there is no real evidence that brows were blotted out and repainted higher up on the brow, though that may have happened in the theatre for effect. Patches were very popular throughout both the 17th and 18th century, most commonly round and black made out of taffeta, velvet or paper, but larger and more elaborate shapes were also in use (Samuel Pepysdiary). Theatre goers also enjoyed seeing women in breeches roles in which a female character disguised herself as a man by wearing tight pants that exposed their legs. Octavius now had only to gain the affection and trust of the people, so he masked his great power by establishing a new system of government while maintaining Roman traditions and befriending the Senate. On the other hand, the Senate had grown accustomed to, and benefited from, having Octavius in command, and the fact that the government system of the old Republic had crumbled in failure gave the Senate a reason to keep Octavius in office. Octavius knew that his rise to absolute power would be delivered to him gradually and that, in order to fully and effectively implement his complex plans into Roman society, a continuous office as Proconsul would not be sufficient. With this in mind, Octavius proceeded methodically and with tact. He justified any of his actions by claiming that it was for the greater good of the Republic of Rome so that no one would see fit to usurp his power, whether that be by legal means or by assassination. He promised that he would bring back the customs of Rome s ancestors, and in January 27 B.C., he announced that he would be returning humbly his power over Rome back to the Senate and the people of Rome. They despised the way it heaped inequality and servitude upon women, and decided to assert their opinion on the issue in order to change the perceptions and imposed limitations on women. Dicamba is a pesticide used by three Big Ag companies, Monsanto, BASF, and DuPont, which had recently been approved for over the top application, rather than its previous use of applying the pesticide at the base of the plant. The article raises a big question about GMO s, an issue that we have covered in class and in readings. The issues facing the farmers in over twenty five states is one of great importance. Do they triumph or does the situation dominate their past history and morality? The questions, ideas, and underlying psychology that Zimbardo covers in this novel relate to our AP Psychology class in great amounts. The book talks about an experiment we discussed in class, social psychology, and how certain situations can affect an individual s personality. The theory is that people are not inherently evil, but can easily become evil if put in the right situation and if the operation of the situation allows it. This relates to the fundamental attribution error that we discussed in class. Many people do not think of how much the situation of an event plays into what happened. They rely too heavily on personality. Therefor, if someone acts cruelty, they are just a cruel person. However, that may not necessarily be the case. Zimbardo uses Abu Ghraib as a perfect example of this. The soldiers that heinous acts or torture were previously seen as good eggs. They were not bad people. However, a situation arose where they received power, and the operation that allowed them to have that power also let it become corrupt. This is also shown in the Stanford Prison Experiment. When given the role of a prison guard, an individual must think of how a guard would act. They then try to act accordingly, even if this may cause cognitive dissonance. They saw the situation and decided that they needed to be dominate and authoritative. As was seen however, this can quickly get out of hand. At Stanford, the students go from insults to torture as Zimbardo describes. Anonymity also plays a lead role in these situations. As I address the some of the chapters in the book I will associate how Berry s ideas link into the material discussed in this class. Farming and the Global Economy is the first chapter of the book. Leisure has multiple meanings, one being Unobligated time, state of being, and consumption patterns, in addition to occurring outside of working life (Introduction, 2013, p. 4). Sport occurs during leisure time, either as an active participant or as a spectator. Tourism refers to travel, particularly away from home for a specific period of time. Parks are protected lands that are available for the utilization of the public. Again, the diagram shows how each of these concepts may overlap. Toxic liquids are not good for the water, humans and marine life. The temperature of the ocean is highly affected by carbon dioxide and climate changes, which impacts primarily the ecosystems and fish communities that live in the ocean(causes and effects). Both ice cream taste too sweet. This is due to imbalance of the ingredients used during ice cream making. This defects can be overcome by reduce the amount of sucrose used. For defects in body, ice cream with emulsifier has gummy body. It is an indication of pasty and sticky body. This is probably due to over stabilization, very high solid content and low overrun. • 50. The Pros And Cons Of Open Border Policy Modern day America has put strict boundaries on immigration, but during the 18th and 19th centuries, an open immigration policy was encouraged and accepted. The concept of America as the land of dreamers and new beginnings is now lost due to recent border policies. An open border policy should be implemented in America as it upholds the Constitution, benefits the domestic and international economy, and maintains ethical standards for preserving human life. Border restrictions and confinements on migration put the very principles of the constitution at stake. Many proponents of closed borders utilize the Constitution s Foreign Commerce Clause , located in Article 1, to support their argument that Congress has been granted power over migration. According to Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University, the clause supposedly gives Congress control over migration and border policies. Despite this supposition, the Foreign Commerce Clause is merely the realization of its name: it only grants Congress power over commerce between foreign entities. Some people think that being yourself is a bad excuse to be selfish and to not conform to society. Personally I think that establishing your individuality is important to do because people need to express who they are and not try to be like each other. For example, I rap and in order to gain fans I try to distinguish myself from other rappers on Soundcloud because if not, no one will want to make music with me which will make it even harder to become known. Growing up as a kid I didn t exactly fit in with all the other popular kids. As i got older it meant more to me to be who I am. Come to find out i fit in more if i was just myself. In fact, Canada has truly lost its true identity that we once knew. It is slowly being assimilated and in fact Americanized ; in aspects of social identity, national identity, and cultural identity. First, Canada is being slowly Americanized ; in its social identity. When we talk about a country s social identity, we examine a few areas. First thought that comes to most peoples minds is that of the mounted police, beavers, ice hockey, and wide land mass. In fact, our national identity has been brought about by the American way of life. This buying spree essentially started when Walt Disney purchased the Mounted Police s image o it could be displayed in the Ebcot center. The most powerful, stunning uniform is to be adorned by some no account, flag waving, hillbilly yokel. Another national image wh8ich spans all three topics of social, natural and cultural is that of Tim Horton s. The one place where we all go almost every day, has been bought by an American, Dave Thomas. The image of hockey is distorted as well for there are 28 teams in the NHL, and only 6 of those teams are based in Canada. That means that Canada only has 21% of what is considered to be a national sport. The government image is distorted in the Canadians mind as well. All of the American s television shows and news would have some Canadians believe that our governments work the same, and all courts operate in the same way as Judge Judy s and the People s Court. In summary, not only are Canadians loosing the social identity but their national identity as well. Third, not only is the Americanization of Canada taking place through the social and national identities, but also through cultural identities. The Guittern was also the first instrument to use wire strings instead the traditional gut strings used in stringed instruments (Kentor Michael 4). After the Guittern, the guitar s structure stayed the same and had little changes. One of the slightly improved guitars was called the Ghitarra Battente. The Ghitarra Battente was the first guitarlike instrument to use a saddle, a movable bridge, and led the trend towards metal frets (4). The Ghitarra Battente helped the popularity of the guitar grow tremendously. This instrument somewhat slowed down the development and improvements to the guitar until the 1500s.
