This document summarizes a workshop about proposed changes to Macquarie University's HDR Supervision Enhancement Program in 2017 and improving HDR supervision through action planning. Key points include: 1. Registration for the 2017 workshop will be through the HRIS system and training will be included in HROnline. 2. The initial supervision program will be redesigned to be problem-based and two new modules on orientation for adjunct supervisors and cultural competence will be developed. 3. An action planning toolkit for supervisors includes early warning signs of issues and a discussion paper on complaints about post-graduate supervision. Action planning helps MRes and PhD candidates.

This workshop will have two parts:

Enhancement Program 2017
1. 2017 workshop registration will be offered via the Human
Resources Information System (HRIS) so that your training is
automatically included in HROnline (not MQSR)
2. Annual training will be developed in stronger partnership with
Faculty
3. The Initial Supervision Enhancement Program will be redesigned to
be problem based
4. Two new Modules will be developed – Orientation for Adjunct
Supervisors, Cultural Competence and HDR Supervision

1. Supervisor’s Toolkit developed by a Rapid Change process late in
2015-early 2016

7. Early warning signs
• failing to set regular appointments to monitor progress;
• not meeting agreed-upon deadlines;
• ignoring the advice they are given by the other party;
• failing to interact with one another in a responsive and respectful manner
• bad-mouthing one another in conversations with other staff or students;
• showing irritability or aggravation;
• exchanging bad-tempered or overly emotional communications;
• feeling their rights are being undermined.
