India is home to nearly 400 million children aged up to 18 years, which the Government claims is the world’s largest child population. The proportion of children in the 0-5 age group is certainly the world’s largest. Overall, children constitute 42.6 per cent of India’s total population. As a nation professing concern about ensuring their survival, development and well-being throughout their childhood, it is essential for us to realise that in any policy or planning for national progress, being child-focused is not kindness but commonsense.

India's ancient wisdom, which is still relevant today, inspires people to work for the larger objective of the well-being of all stakeholders. For example, our Rushees, Munees and Saints preached us to serve the society. The idea of CSR first came up in 1953 when it became an academic topic in HR Bowen’s “Social Responsibilities of the Business”. Since then, there has been continuous debate on the concept and its implementation. Although the idea has been around for more than half a century, there is still no clear consensus over its definition. Post 1991, there is increasingly a receding role of the state in the economic and social sphere. An increasing acceptance of CSR by large number of corporate, post liberalization can thus be seen in the context of the larger role being consciously carved for the private sector in an economy which was earlier largely controlled and managed by the State. The corporate world is keen to exploit the opportunities that are being provided by the new economic outlook of the State. Today, 93% of the world’s largest 250 companies now publish annual corporate responsibility reports, almost 60% of which are independently audited.
Samhita launched a landmark report on corporate social responsibility (CSR) supported by The Rockefeller Foundation. This study was conducted to ascertain the current state of play of CSR, key challenges and opportunities and the ‘calls-to- action’ that can make the vision of the Companies Act, 2013 a reality.

Started in 2015, the HCL Grant is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment by
HCL, through HCL Foundation to strengthen and empower NGOs, engage with them, as
well as recognize them for their path breaking work. Currently focused on rural
development, the HCL Grant is awarded in three thematic categories, namely Environment,
Health and Education. The Grant is designed to support NGOs doing path-breaking work,
that have a proven track record of evident impact, high credibility and distinct ability to
deliver. NGOs that reach out to marginalized, isolated, underserved and underdeveloped
rural communities in India, and work jointly to achieve sustainable socio-economic
development.
HCL Grant is HCL’s contribution towards Nation Building. The vision behind HCL Grant is
to mine out best practices & most successful models of rural development that are relevant
in various contexts, and provide a platform where these models receive unprecedented
visibility and replicated by many, such that the country excels in achieving the
developmental milestones. Unique aspect of the HCL Grant is that the organizations are
recognized not only based on the “idea”, but also for their power to transform these ideas
into reality and thereby, transform Indian villages.
So far, the HCL Grant has already committed ₹51.5 Crore (~US$7.25 Million) towards
Rural Development in the areas of Environment, Health & Education through current HCL
Grant Projects with an ambition to reach 10,15,033 people in 7,577 villages in 42 districts
across 15 states of India of which the projects have already covered
4,64,088 beneficiaries.
HCL Grant awards the winning NGOs in each of the categories of Environment, Health and
Education, a grant of ₹5 Crore (~US$0.71 Million) for a years project. The HCL Grant
rewards the other finalists too, who are doing great work in their own right. So the 2 other
finalists in each category receive a grant of ₹25 lakhs (~US$0.04 Million) for an year-long
project which is mutually agreed with HCL Foundation after the final Jury meet. Thus, the
total committed fund for HCL Grant is ₹16.5 Crores (~US$2.36 Million), for Edition V.
