Harvard Concept
Harvard Concept (Fisher and Urgy) "Getting to Yes" (also called the Harvard concept) describes a
method called principled negotiation to reach an agreement whose success is judged by three
criteria: 1. It should produce a wise agreement if agreement is possible. 2. It should be efficient. 3. It
should improve or at least not damage the relationship between the parties. The authors argue that
their method can be used in virtually any negotiation. Issues are decided upon by their merits and
the goal is a win–win situation for both sides. Below is a summary of some of the key concepts
from the book. The four steps of a principled negotiation are: 1. Separate the people from the
problem 2. Focus on interests, not...show more content...
Step 3: Invent Options for Mutual Gain The authors feel that a common problem with many
negotiations is there are too few options to choose from. Little or no time is spent creating
options. This, they feel, is a mistake. There are four steps to generating options: 1. Separate
inventing from deciding. Like in any brainstorming session, don't judge the ideas people bring
forward, just get them on the board. 2. Broaden the options on the table rather than look for a
single answer. Remember the men at the library? The only option they saw was opening or
closing the window in the room they were both sitting in. In fact, there are many options: borrow
a sweater, open a window in another room, move to a different spot, etc. 3. Search for mutual
gain. In a negotiation, both sides can be worse off and both sides can gain. Principled
negotiations are not about "I win" and "you lose". 4. Invent ways of making the other party's
decisions easy. Since a successful negotiation requires both parties to agree, make it easy for the
other side to choose. This is where putting yourself in the other person's shoes can be very valuable.
What might prevent "Bob" from agreeing? Can you do anything to change those things? Step 4:
Insist on Using Objective Criteria Principled negotiations are not battles of will. There is no winner
and you don't need to push your position until the other

Writing Styles Essay example
Writing Styles
In this essay I will be going into detail about three different writing styles used in health and social
care. I will also be comparing the writing styles against each other.
Persuasive Writing – Persuasive writing is all about trying to get someone's attention on something.
Persuasive writing use's specific features which help the information used to become persuasive
towards the audience. This could include using present tense, using emotive language, using
rhetorical questions, making opinions sound like facts, as well as using powerful verbs and
adjectives etc. Persuasive writing can be linked and used in many different ways. One of the ways
would include health and social care. This could be linked by usage in...show more content...
The journalist also always puts out a headline that would immediately get the audiences attention.
The headline is always the art of the journalist work, as they see this as an opportunity to sell their
story; headline could be short, snappy, and catchy. After the headline the journalist provides the
audience with a short paragraph which sums up the story, some see this as a short introduction.
The journalist does this to gain the audience interest. Most people know that a person's eyes are
always sighted upon small amounts of writing and imagery. So the short paragraph would make
the audience show some interest towards the story. In health and social care journalistic writing is
used a lot, whether this is about the stories about the NHS being published. Or when major
illnesses or problems are coming. An examp0le of this would be when we went through the period
of swine flue; wine flue was making its front page everywhere. This not only was a disaster but it
was the journalists dream, as they new it was a hot topic to write about as it would gain many
peoples attention, this would also push the journalists ratings up.
All three writing styles are different from each other in variety of ways. We see as persuasive
language as a main way to get the attention of someone, where as reflective language is where you
speak about what had happened through–out the day. However journalistic writing talks about

My writing styles Essay
My writing styles
There are many writing styles that many people pick up as they go through there many years of
schooling. Each person picks up the same type of writing styles but as years go by people seem to
pick up there own little types of writing style that separates them from everyone else. As I have
gone through many years of English classes I have acquired more and more skills and many more are
sure to come as I continue my education. My writing skills have only gotten better from the time of
ninth grade English class until today. Since my days back in junior high school I was only taught
the basic skills to write papers and since then they have grown to make me a decent writer. I have
many strengths and also...show more content...
Run–on sentences is also another one of my weaknesses as a writer which is not as big as a
problem as my weakness of verb tense use. Another of many disadvantages of a writer in my point
of view is my able to organize my sentences so they run smoothly. I need to work a little bit more on
my internal organization of paragraphs. I don't exactly incorporate quotes so that my sentences run as
smoothly as they can. All together I think these couple of disadvantages of my writing is minimal
and that I can work on these mistakes out if I would proof read my papers more in depth. If I can
work out my weaknesses from my writing I will have more advantages and also be considered a
better writer.
Along with disadvantages of my writing also come the advantages which make me a half way
decent writer in my perspective. In writing papers I include many interesting facts about the topic
that I am writing on. This skill of being able to research topics good is something that I think is
one of my major strengths because of the ability to take the time and patience to weed through tons
of material. I am able to take this research that I find and incorporate it into my papers in a fair
enough manner that makes my papers have way decent. Another strength that I posses is my

Servant Leadership Essay
Servant Leadership
What is it? The phrase "Servant Leadership" was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in The Servant as
a Leader, an essay he first published in 1970 ("What is servant," ). The servant leader serves first,
while aspiring to lead second. The servant leader serves the people that he or she leads, implying
employees are an end in themselves rather than a means to organizational purpose or bottom–line.
Servant leadership is meant to replace a command and control, top–down, model of management.
Servant leadership encourages collaboration, trust, foresight, listening, and the ethical use of power
and empowerment. A few famous examples of servant leaders are George Washington, Gandi and
Caesar Chavez.
Key Principles In a...show more content...
8.Stewardship
Greenleaf's view of all institutions was one in which CEO's, staff, directors and trustees all play
significant roles in holding institutions in trust for the greater good of society.
9.Commitment to the Growth of People
Leaders believe people have an intrinsic value beyond tangible contributions as workers. As a result,
genuine interest in the spiritual, professional and personal growth of all employees is demonstrated.
10.Building Community
Leaders seek to identify a means for building a sense of community among those who work in a
given institution.
Differences from Other Styles In the approach on general leadership characteristics, the
fundamental difference is authentic leaderships strive to be "real", whereas servant leaders strive
to be "right." Servant leadership is a style that lays down a set of characteristics that all leaders are
supposed to emulate to attain success, and tries to shape the character and personality of the leader.
On the other hand, authentic leaders tend to rely on their own unique set of experiences and style
that has been learned and developed throughout their career. The main difference between servant
and authentic styles, when applying into practice, is the serving of others. One of the primary
applications is to give priority to the interest of others. Servant leaders exercise their duty

Harvard Style Outline
Using a Harvard–style outline can help you organize your ideas and create a structure for your
essay. To create a Harvard–style outline, you must first identify the main message, then rearrange
your ideas, notes, and quotations in a form that will best support your argument. After establishing
your argument, look over your notes and classify them into general categories. As you rearrange your
ideas and information, try to merge similar categories and remove those that do not relate to your
argument. Remember that the large categories should be extremely general and include common
themes, be sure to avoid having too many. Then proceed to order them according to your thesis. The
next step is to create subcategories within the general ones. After,

Different Learning Styles Essay
Different Learning Styles
Students have different ways to learn. Some people are hands on learners or visual learners. Teachers
try to adapt the way they teach; to the way their students learn the best. The information that is being
taught should be made fun so that the students remember the information. Schools are also using new
technology to help students learn. Different learning styles have different effects on people.
Different learning styles are the talk of many school districts from near and far. The study of
different learning styles has gone back since the late 19th to the early 20th centuries. We all know
that people have different ways of learning, so teachers try to teach the way their...show more

and contrast information.? (Gadzella, 2002) Fact Retention scale assesses ?how effectively
specific factual information is retrieved from one?s memory.? (Gadzella, 2002) After doing these
studies for many years it has been said that ILP is very reliable and valid. ?In 1983, Lockhart and
Schmeck studied the validity of the four ILP scales with the different components of a course and
demonstrated how these scales can be useful to instructors who would like to ?conceptualize and
account for students' individual scores?

Who Shaped Harvard?
Throughout the past centuries, many people and events are credited for shaping the Harvard we all
know today. Beginning with Harvard's original colonial origins. Harvard was founded by Puritans
with the intention of training clergy men. The college's first president was influential in the schools
evolutionary process. Henry Dunster, was a man that the community at that time– trusted to educate
and favor Puritanism values. Dunster however, was the first to start declining the original religious
roots because he favored English Baptist Faith. Favoring another faith provoked controversy since
community members both trusted and expected him to believe and teach Puritan theology. He
removed himself from the position and Harvard continued with...show more content...
Josiah Quincy was known for his rough touch. Many students acted out and Quincy did not tolerate
poor behavior. Despite Quincy's aggressive leadership; he did make a difference. He was the man
that rediscovered the idea of VERITAS, the now famous motto, and brought it to life. He proudly
displayed the new motto and could be interpreted as his stand against religion at the school.
VERITAS has religious roots, but the meaning of the word is truth. A word that many students can
feel they can relate to regardless of their religious background. The president that followed him was
Edward Everett and he served as president from (1846–1849). He was another man who students
pranked and didn't respect. However, his acts as president took part in shaping Harvard. He
brought major research to the school and also encouraged academic freedom like the president
before him. However, he did not like abolishing the schools religious motto prior to VERITAS.
Each of these leaders changed Harvard is some way. Religious debate and change was
unavoidable, because theres are all very different people. From their leadership to their opinions,
they were all different. However, each time a new president appeared or the students would react; it
all was helping Harvard evolve to what it is

In fact, there are many options: borrow a sweater, open a window in another room, move to a different spot, etc. 3. Search for mutual gain. In a negotiation, both sides can be worse off and both sides can gain. Principled negotiations are not about "I win" and "you lose". 4. Invent ways of making the other party's decisions easy. Since a successful negotiation requires both parties to agree, make it easy for the other side to choose. This is where putting yourself in the other person's shoes can be very valuable.
