During the 1920s, the northeast section of Manhattan known as Harlem was home to many African American artists, musicians, and writers. This period became known as the Harlem Renaissance, where there was a huge explosion of creative works by African Americans. Some of the prominent artists involved included Aaron Douglas, Jacob Lawrence, and photographer James Van Der Zee.
