Guru Nanak Jayanti
Ek Onkar- Its Significance
 Ek Onkar is a symbol which appears
at the beginning of Sikh scripture and
means, “One With everything”.
 The Mool Mantar is said to be the first
composition uttered by Guru Nanak
Dev upon enlightenment at the age of
about 30. Being the basis of Sikhism it
encapsulates the entire theology of
Sikhism. When a person begins to
learn Gurbani, this is the first verse
that most would learn.
Now let’s look at the meaning of
the prayer by breaking it down
 Ek Onkar - There is Only One God
 Sat Naam - His Name is True
 Karta Purakh - He is the Creator
 Nirbhau - Without Fear
 Nirvair - Without Hatred
 Akaal Moorat - Ominipresent
 Ajooni - Free from Birth and Death
 Saibhan - Self-Illuminating
 GurParsad - Realized through the Grace of the True Guru
 Jap - Meditate upon His Name
 Aad Sach - For He was True when Time Began
 Jugaad Sach - He has been True since the Ages
 Hai Bhi Sach - He is still True
 Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach - Guru Nanak says He will forever be
True
GURU NANAK
DEV JI
The benefactor Lord
listened to the cries
(of humanity) and
sent Guru Nanak to
this world ... Guru
Nanak came to
redeem humanity in
Kalyug.
(Bhai Gurdas Jee)
Early Years
 Guru Nanak Dev, the first Sikh guru and
the founder of the Sikh religion, was born
on the full moon day in the month of
Kartik as per the Hindu calendar. Hence,
his birthday is celebrated as Guru Nanak
Jayanti.
 Guru Nanak was born in 1469 A.D. at
Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi, 30 miles from
Lahore, in the present Pakistan.
 He was an extra ordinary child
Guru Purab
 Guru Nanak’s
birthday celebration
usually lasts three
days
 The Sikhs visit
Gurdwaras where
special programs are
arranged and kirtans
(religious songs) are
sung. Houses and
Gurdwaras are
decorated and lit up
to add to the
festivities.
Two days
before his
birthday Akhand
Path -the holy
book, the Guru
Granth Sahib is
read
continuously,
from beginning
to end without a
 A day prior to his birthday a procession is organized and led
by the Panj Pyaras
 They head the procession carrying the Sikh Flag and the
palki of Shri Guru Granth Sahib followed by teams of singers
“Gatka Team”, who display their martial arts.
 Local bands playing religious music form a special part of the
procession.
Free sweets and community lunches langar, is offered to
everyone irrespective of religious faith. Men, women, and
children, participate in this karseva as service to the
community by cooking food and distributing it in the name
of ‘Guru ka Langar’, with the traditional ‘Karah Prasad’
SOME MORE INFORMATION
ABOUT GURU NANAK DEVJI
GURU = TEACHER
 Nanak started his first job as a
storekeeper at Sultanpur.
 He would often explain his ideas to
people gathered in the village. People
liked the way he explained how to love
and follow God.
 Some began to call him a ‘GURU’
which means a teacher. Others called
him ‘SAT GURU’ which means True
Teacher.
God’s
Message
 One morning, when Nanak was 30 years
old, he went to bathe in the river. He
disappeared and people thought he had
drowned.
 Three days later, he reappeared and
remained silent for a whole day.
 Then he said: “There is neither a Hindu
nor as a Muslim, only God’s path and I
shall follow God’s path.”
 He meant that all human beings are
EQUAL in God’s eyes as was not
interested in labels.
Guru Nanak’s Message
There is One God
All human races are equal
Love towards to all and
hatred towards none
Guru Nanak’s Message
Be true in thought, words
and deeds
Judge a person by his
deeds and not by his class
or status
Be kind, truthful, and
humble.
His 3 Main Teachings
 Vand Chakho: Sharing with others,
helping those with less who are in
need
 Kirat karo: Earning/making a living
honestly, without exploitation or fraud
 Naam Japo: Meditating on God’s
name to control the five
weaknesses of the human personality.
 Guru Nanak clearly says: "The road to the abode of God is
long and arduous. There are no short cuts for rich people.
Everyone must undergo the same discipline. Everyone must
purify his mind through service of humanity and Nama
Smarana.
 Everyone must live according to the will of the Lord without
grumbling or murmuring. How to find Him? There is one way.
Make His will your own. Be in tune with the Infinite. There is
no other way".
 The first stage in making the divine will one’s own is attained
through prayer for divine grace or favour—Ardas for Guru
Prasad.
 Guru Nanak attaches very great importance to prayer. He
says that nothing can be achieved by man without divine
favour. He says: "Approach God with perfect humility.
 Throw yourself on His mercy. Give up pride, show and
egoism. Beg for His kindness and favour. Do not think of your
own merits, abilities, faculties and capacities.
 Be prepared to die in the pursuit of His love and union with
Him. Love God as a woman loves her husband. Make
