You're hearing about data-driven storytelling everywhere. But how do you do it? How do you tell stories with data in creative ways to achieve some goals with the audiences you are speaking to? This session will introduce hands-on approaches to moving from data, to story, to a presentation of that story that convinces people. This is hard work, but we'll make it fun with a variety of hands-on approaches. Bring your background, your brain, your wisdom, and your creativity; together we'll improve our ability to tell compelling stories with data to drive change on the issues you care about.

Data is too often used “about” people, rather than “with” people. Are you looking for novel ways to engage and empower populations that don’t “speak” the language of data? This workshop session will introduce the Data Culture Project – our suite of hands-on, arts-based, activities that bring people together around data with a goal of empowerment. We’ll do two of our participatory hands-on activities in this workshop – building data sculptures and brainstorming questions to ask a dataset. These activities can be run individually within a project scope to involve various low-data-literacy stakeholders, or can be strung together to do things such as design and paint community-driven data murals. You will walk away with concrete approaches to engaging constituents at various points within your data lifecycle, and inspirational examples of how to empower those that don’t otherwise “speak” data. Only through collaborative outreach, engagement, and capacity building can we truly “leave no-one behind” in the data revolution.

Great data visualization tells a compelling story by making connections between data points and revealing their relationships and interactions. It allows large amounts of information to be understood quickly by representing it visually. Different types of visualizations like maps, bar charts, line graphs and pie charts are suited to depicting different kinds of patterns and comparisons in the data. Creating effective visualizations involves considering what story the data can tell and designing the visualization to best convey that story.

How do you get an audience suffering from information overload to pay attention and absorb information? Infographics and data visualizations communicate data in an easily consumable format. However, designing data visualizations and infographics is different than traditional graphic design. It doesn’t matter if you are designing data visualizations for news publications, presentations, posters, annual reports or online infographics, these seven most deadly design mistakes are made consistently by both expert and novice designers. Research shows that visual information is more easily understood and much more likely to be remembered by readers if done well. Randy’s presentation will cover the top seven mistakes designers make with infographics, and more importantly, design tips to overcome these common design blunders.
The Seven Deadly Sins of Infographics Design:
False - Accuracy the most important aspect of an Infographic design, both visually and textually
Haphazard - Data should be well thought out with key messaging and a clear purpose
Textual - Using text-only data provides no context for readers, and is viewed as less important

Confusing - Learn the difference between bad complexity that confuses readers and good complexity that invites engagement

How do you get an audience suffering from information overload to pay attention and absorb information? Infographics and data visualizations communicate data in an easily consumable format. However, designing data visualizations and infographics is different than traditional graphic design. It doesn’t matter if you are designing data visualizations for news publications, presentations, posters, annual reports or online infographics, these seven most deadly design mistakes are made consistently by both expert and novice designers. Research shows that visual information is more easily understood and much more likely to be remembered by readers if done well. Randy’s presentation will cover the top seven mistakes designers make with infographics, and more importantly, design tips to overcome these common design blunders.

We talk a lot these days about data science, and how it will pave our paths with beautiful insights and unexpected new relations and connections in our given datasets, and even across datasets.
But how to maintain the "Science" part in "Data Science"? After some time working in this field I appreciate more and more the critical thinking which has characterized the progress in science.
Hypothesis, facts, prove and/or disprove the thesis. This is how science has progressed in the past centuries. This method has been formalized by Popper and categorize as non-science all disciplines where the statements cannot be falsified. In other words, if a statement cannot be disproved, we cannot talk of science, since there is no mechanism to left to verify the solution or to prove it wrong.
When that happens the argument can still be accepted, but not scientifically accepted. Ways of accepting or refuting a non falsifiable statement are for instance based on aesthetic, authority or pragmatic or philosophical considerations. All valid but not scientific. This applies for instance to statements in the disciplines of politics, teology, ethics, etc.
Science has definitely progressed since then. For instance, Bayesian networks and statistical inductions are currently part of the arsenal of the (data) scientist weapons. But, no matter how the baseline is set, critical thinking and a rigorous method are definitely helpful in understanding the results produced by science in particular when this is based on large amount of data and computational in nature, rather than formula/model driven.
Data Science has currently many different connotations. On one side it praises the "artistry", the genius of laying out connections between disciplines and concepts. This is a truly great aspect of scientists and creativity is definitely very welcome in all data science profiles.
With the fun of creating new insights and new data golden eggs, a data scientist has to put up with those annoying criteria of reproducibility, falsifiability and peer reviewing. Sometimes these elements are postponed or left behind in name of the artistry. Granted, it's just hard to find metrics and baselines in order to compare models and data science solutions. But the scientific method has proven to be solid over the centuries and has proven to allow factual scientific discussion between scientists and a to allow selection between models based on objective agreed criteria.
The Wild West of Data Wrangling (PyTN)
This talk discusses techniques for dealing with messy and imperfect data. Three examples are provided: (1) commercial real estate data with validity issues that were addressed through consensus, imputation, outlier removal and OCR; (2) click data with cookie issues that required transformations like sampling and clustering after preprocessing; (3) digital media data with access issues that necessitated working with insufficient data using decomposition and seeking more data. The overall message is to focus on the problem, identify data limitations, and apply creative solutions like reworking the data.

When you think of “data visualization” what is the very first thing that comes to mind? For many, it’s bar graphs, pie charts, and histograms, or maybe some combination thereof. You’re not wrong – but it’s so much more than that. The era of pie and bar charts has come and gone; these traditional visualizations alone are insufficient. Now is the time of data visualized on a rich canvas. A canvas that not only informs, but immerses you in information in much the same way that your favourite book immerses you in its narrative.
