1. MY GUSHCLOUD
INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
By Daniel Pratt
VISA3005 - Creative Arts Professional Practicum
https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-pratt-a10820229/
2. ABOUT GUSHCLOUD
โฆ Gushcloud is a global marketing company that was founded in 2011 and is based in Singapore.
Predominantly working with influencers, Gushcloud's reach spans across countries such as
Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Japan, USA and Australia.
โฆ Services Gushcloud provides include content creation, social media management and a strong
focus on working with influencers. Through their relationship with influencers across the globe,
Gushcloud aims to promote their core values of integrity, excellence, engineering, honour and
positivity through their work.
โฆ Gushcloud's sister company is Summer International, the company I reported to for my
internship. Summer International has multiple sub-divisions, focusing primarily on the healthcare,
beauty and make-up industries.
3. MY ASSIGNMENT
My internship consisted of working within the Summer International company. I was assigned two
mentors - Krisel Abulencia (Abu) and Cara De Jesus. While I received no contact from Cara, I did
work with Abu throughout the internship, communicating on a weekly basis. Abu is the Global
Operations & Marketing Manager of Summer International.
I worked exclusively with the Hanjan brand, and more specifically involving their website. Hanjan is
a health and lifestyle company, that promotes the โRecharge Booster Jellyโ as their signature
product. The jelly is marketed as a hangover prevention product with natural ingredients.
I provided general marketing advice, such as SEO, keywords and ad advice. I did not work any set
days/hours, instead Abu would contact me weekly, we would discuss the results of my prior weekโs
task and then she would assign me a new one for the following week.
5. EXPERIENCE
I both enjoyed and greatly appreciated the opportunity I had received. To be able to work with such
a large company in an industry I hope to be a part of when I graduated was extremely exciting. I am
thankful that the section I was delegated to was more along the lines of what I want to pursue full -
time in the future as opposed to the other sections.
Compared to University, it was a vastly different experience. I feel as if University studies help to
lay the foundations of what an industry involves. As a student, you learn many things that might
not be immediately useful to you but may be beneficial in the future.
Whilst in the โworkingโ world, you might be assigned a specific role in your job (for example,
keyword researcher) and thatโs your sole focus. You must learn all there is about keywords, how they
work, what they do, how to find them, etc. Most other things you may have learned or used in
University arenโt applicable.
6. STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES
I am fortunate enough to have already worked in digital marketing as an independent contractor and
therefore could provide a variety of services most new internships might not be able to. Perhaps
not necessarily a โstrengthโ, it did allow me to adapt to different tasks that were quite different from
one another. This enhanced my internship experience, as I was able to do a โbit of everythingโ and
increased my overall learning through the time I spent with Gushcloud.
My main weakness is my struggle to adhere to a lack of schedule. Every job Iโve ever worked, as
well as University, have all had deadlines. Working with Gushcloud provided a lot more freedom, as
I was given a task and free reigns over how/when I had completed it. At first, I thought it necessary
to complete it as soon as possible, but when I realized how busy Abu and her team were I knew I
could take my time as she wouldnโt be able to contact me regularly. It was difficult to just take my
time and perform tasks at a slower pace, as it is a new experience for me, but it was also enjoyable
to be able to spend more time on a given task without the pressure.
7. AREAS OF INTEREST
Having completed a variety of tasks for the Hanjan brand, I can truly say I enjoyed all areas I
worked in and all tasks I completed. It was a great experience, and only helped to solidify my
intentions to pursue this career full-time upon commencement of my studies.
Whilst the health/lifestyle area of marketing isnโt one I particularly am interested in working in, it
was great to be able to experience something completely different. It allowed me to research the
importance of certain aspects of marketing I wouldnโt usually think about (the importance of
natural ingredients, sustainability, etc.)
Other areas I would like to try in the future would likely be more content/graphics based, as I
believe thatโs an area I need to learn more about. In terms of products/brands themselves, I would
like to work more in the beauty industry, while it has no interest to me personally, I need to work
outside of my comfort zone, and thatโs an industry that grows exponentially annually.
9. SEO
My first task consisted of reviewing the Hanjan
site and performing a search engine optimisation
(SEO) analysis.
Firstly, I researched the technical side of the site.
I listed the issues that needed to be fixed, as there
were a few crucial elements missing entirely in
relation to SEO.
Then I researched the most frequent keywords
that the Hanjan site is displaying.
10. SEO (Part 2)
Thirdly, I researched the most common keywords
that were gaining the Hanjan site traffic, as well as
the country the user is located in.
Finally, I listed my overall suggestions. This
received great feedback from Abu, as she seemed
genuinely interested in all my suggestions, and
indicated that she would address all of them over
time.
11. KEYWORDS
For my next task, Abu requested a list of
keywords that would be suitable for the Hanjan
site.
I created a list of short-tail, long-tail,
transactional and informational keywords. I asked
Abu which product was Hanjanโs โsignatureโ, and I
would build the keywords around that.
With the hangover prevention jelly being their
main product, I built my list around a variety of
anti-hangover/hangover prevention queries.
12. AMAZON
OPTIMISATION
The next task was to provide an analysis of the
Hanjan Amazon store, then provide optimisation
feedback.
This was something new to me, and the first task I
performed where I had no experience in doing so.
Because of this, this task took me a lot longer to
finish than usual as I had to research and learn
ways to optimise Amazon stores. Overall, it was a
great learning experience.
13. AD
OPTIMISATION
My final task was ad optimisation. I was asked to
review the ads for Hanjan and provide feedback
on what works/what doesnโt.
I personally felt as both were great ads, so the
most difficult part of this task was to dissect them
and provide suggestions to improve on them.
14. THANK YOU
This is a complete review and reflection of my time as an intern at Gushcloud. It was a
tremendously rewarding and enjoyable experience, and I learned a lot over the weeks. This
internship has reaffirmed my desire of wanting to enter the digital marketing industry, and being
able to gain work experience in an industry before even graduating is an invaluable experience
which will allow me to make the most of my studies. Knowing what I want to achieve in the future
is a fantastic motivator.
Thank you to everyone at Gushcloud and Summer International for the opportunity, and for their
kindness (and patience!) taking in interns. A special thank you to my mentor, Abu, for being so
helpful, encouraging and an overall great person to work with. Thanks to Gay Carr for making this
all happen, and especially to Elaine Tay for the help and guidance along the way.
