Gulliver's Travels is a 1726 satirical novel by Jonathan Swift that parodies travel narratives. It recounts the adventures of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon, who experiences bizarre voyages to surreal lands, including Lilliput, where he towers over its tiny inhabitants, and Brobdingnag, where he is dwarfed by the giant residents. The book became an instant bestseller and has remained continuously in print ever since.

4. Gulliver’s Travels

Gulliver’s Travels (1726, amended 1735), officially
Travels into Several
Remote Nations of the World, is both a satire on
human nature and
a parody of the “travelers’ tales” literary sub-genre. It
is Swift’s most
celebrated work, as well as one of the indisputable
classics of English literature. The book became
tremendously popular as soon as it
was published (John Gay said in a 1726 letter to Swift
that "it is
universally read, from the cabinet council to the
nursery". Since then, it has never been out of print.

5. The book begins with a short preamble in which
Lamuel Gulliver, in the style of books of the time,
gives a brief outline of his life and history
before his voyages.
He enjoys traveling, although
it is that love of travel that is his downfall .
