WHAT IS THE DAILY FIVE? The Daily Five is a literacy structure that allows for differentiation in the classroom and provides consistency. It is an integrated literacy instruction and classroom management system for use in reading and writing workshops. It is a system of five literacy tasks that teaches students independence.

WHY IS IT CALLED THE DAILY FIVE? Read to Self Read to Someone Listen to Reading Work on Writing Working with Words There isn’t time for 5 rounds! It is called “The Daily Five” because there are  five literacy components  for children to choose from when they go off to work.  It is NOT called The Daily Five because they have to do all 5 each day.
THESE FOUNDATIONS ARE IMPORTANT TO THE DAILY FIVE Trusting students Providing choice Nurturing community Creating a sense of urgency Building stamina Staying out of students’ way once routines are established
As time progresses students…  build stamina Increase fluency Increase independence Increase comprehension READ TO SELF Introduce 3 ways to read a book Read the words Retell a story you have heard before Read the pictures
WORK ON WRITING Helps you become a better  writer Helps you become a better  reader It is  fun Works on the  fluency of writing

RESULTS OF DAILY 5 Students will be spending most of their time  actually reading , which research supports as the number one way to improve reading.
