Literacy includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will learn literacy through read alouds, independent reading, guided reading, writer's workshop, and word study. During read alouds, the teacher will read stories aloud and discuss topics like characters and plots. Independent reading allows students to choose their own books. Guided reading places students in groups to read various books with the teacher. Writer's workshop gives students time to independently write for different purposes and share their writing. Word study teaches word principles like short vowel sounds through creating word lists.

 Literacy is reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
 They are used everyday when we are reading
books, magazines, menus, and so much more.

4. READ ALOUD’S
 I will read aloud a different story each day. While
reading we will talk about many different topics.
 These topics can be: how the character has
changed, the plot of the story, the setting, the
conflicts, and resolutions.
 We will do Author Studies through read aloud’s,
which are always fun!

5. INDEPENDENT READING/ READER’S
WORKSHOP
 This is when the students will pick their own books
to read by themselves.
 When you pick a book, you must use the “5 Finger
Rule.”
 You will learn different strategies to use while you
are reading your just right book.

6. GUIDED READING
 Each student will be placed into a reading group.
 With the group and the teacher, students will read
various types of books.
 We will learn how to express and share what we
are reading.

7. INDEPENDENT WRITING/ WRITERS
WORKSHOP
 The students will independently write for a purpose.
 The students will write various types of text (ex:
personal, creative).
 We will learn about the different types of sentences
we see in our writing.
 We will share our writing with each other.

8. WORD STUDY
 Each week we will talk about a different word
principle (ex: some words use the short /o/ sound,
like the “o” in octopus).
 As a class we will create a list of words that go
along with the principle for the week.
 Our spelling words for the week will come from the
list we create.
