Sarah, feeling unimportant in her family, often escapes to the local library. There, the librarian Mr. Hushbaum warns her against reading a mysterious book called "The Always Changing Story". Defying his warning, Sarah takes the book home one night. Strange events begin occurring, and Sarah is terrified. She returns to the library begging Mr. Hushbaum to take the book back, but he refuses and sends her to an elderly woman for help. However, the elderly woman refuses to get involved due to her own traumatic past experiences with the book.

1. Group Story
In the small town of Buford, Wyoming, lived a young girl named Sarah. Sarah was the
middle child and often felt least important. Days where mother and father had their hands full
with the eldest and youngest, Sarah would run off to the local library and get lost in the many
books. Morgan Library was her home.
Mr. Hushbaum, the librarian, was her dearest friend. He aided Sarah in discovering new
books. Mr. Hushbaum encouraged Sarah to not subject herself to admiring just one type of book.
He wanted Sarah to get her hands on each and every book she could… except for one,
“The Always Changing Story.” Now Sarah had never come upon this book before, but if she did
she knew what to do, stay away.
It was a rainy Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Cannon were punishing Stacy and Jimmy,
the eldest and youngest, for breaking a rather expensive mirror in the house. As the yelling
increased Sarah escaped through the kitchen, straight toward the back door. She had to get out of
the house. Sarah couldn’t stand all of the yelling and arguing.
Sarah was headed to her home, the Morgan Library. Entering the library Sarah greets Mr.
Hushbaum. “Hello there!” says Sarah, only to be taken back by the fact that Mr. Hushbaum isn’t
present. She thinks little of why Mr. Hushbaum isn’t there and sees this as the perfect
opportunity to sneak and read “The Always Changing Story”. The book looked old and ratty on
the outside, but the pages looked as if they had never been read before.
Sarah got home with the book, and started to make a snack for herself. As she was
warming her snack in the oven she began to read the book. The book was about a retired police
officer who just started taking up reading. The book captivated her, and she didn’t even know
why. She was so drawn to this book that with every page flip she could feel her excitement
building. She flipped yet another page, and cut her finger on the corner of it, which seemed to
break her strong concentration. She looked up and noticed the entire kitchen was filled with
smoke. She closed the book and left it on the counter and rushed over to get the burning food
from the oven.
The young woman decided that the snack was a waste and decided to go to bed without
it. She had already forgotten all about the book that she had left in the kitchen. As she brushed
her teeth she caught a glimpse of something behind her in the mirror. She turned quickly to see
what it was but only saw her dog lying on the bed in her room. Normally she would chastise the
dog and make it move, but there was something about that night that had her feeling uneasy so
she let the dog stay.
Sarah woke up to a loud noise coming from her kitchen. She shot up quickly and turned
the lamp on in her room. She took a thorough look around the room and could not find her dog,
but the book was now on her bed opened to the page with just a touch of blood on it from her
paper cut. She noticed something in the spine of the book that wasn’t there before. The noise
came from the kitchen again, and she decided to figure out what it was.
Then Sarah started towards her kitchen turning every light on as she went. She noticed
that all of the plants in her apartment seemed to have died in the few hours that she was asleep.
She made it to the kitchen and still had not seen the dog or the source of the noise. She turned

2. around to return to her room to see a shadow going into it. All of a sudden the electricity went
out. The woman was left standing in her kitchen completely frightened. She heard branches
hitting her window, but she lived on the 18th
floor of her complex, nowhere near any trees. She
sank to the floor and covered her eyes. She continued to lay like that for the rest of the night.
Early the next morning, Sarah rushed into the library with the book clutched to her chest.
She walked directly up to the counter and saw the librarian who had warned her against taking
the book.
As she tried to shove the book back in his hands she shouted “Take it back, take it back! I
don’t want it anymore!”
Mr. Hushbaum gave her a pained look but would not take it back in his hands. He said,
“We can’t take it back it is yours now. I warned you not to take it but you did, and now you have
to face the consequences.”
With a desperate look in her eyes Sarah said, “So many horrible things have happened
because of this book! I don’t know what to do!” Then she broke down crying.
The librarian felt pity for her. Finally he said, “Look I can’t take this book back, but there
is someone who I know who has been through this before, maybe she could help you.” He then
proceeded to give Sarah the woman’s address.
As Sarah rushed out of the library with new found hope the librarian looked after her
feeling despair and thinking if only she had listened to me.
Sarah came to the old woman’s house and knocked on her door. The old woman
answered the door and saw the scared looking Sarah asking to come in. As Sarah entered the old
woman’s house she began to ask questions about if the old woman knew what she was going
through. The old woman said she knew exactly what was happening to Sarah but that she was
not interested in trying to get involved because she had seen what it had done to her husband in
the past. The old woman said that there was not anything that could make her help in this
situation because she did not want to have anything to do with that ever again. Sarah started to
become angry at the old woman. She did not see how the woman could refuse to help her
knowing what all was happening, and she and the old woman began to argue with each other. As
the argument continued Sarah finally had enough and stormed out of the old woman’s house
hoping to find another way to get help.
