In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
                   of real media products
-on its level Mine uses a lot of devices similar to that of Kerrang. “Aggressive” fonts (Action
of the time) and I used the contrast and shadow on the picture to replicate some of the
                                                 cover
                       • images used by the magazine.
   • - I attempted to keep a colour scheme aparent, but it looked a bit
     • plain simply black and white. I added in Odd red and yellow parts
for effect and to keep the page material “fresh”.
   • - I used the title (Witness The Filth/WTF) as the slogan for most of
 • the links/offers in the magazine (save on future magazines… WTF?),
challenging the convention of the regular slogan (life is loud etc.), this was the idea
behind the title, connecting with the audience and making them feel part of the
magazine, or at least on their level
Final Front page
• Masthead – I took my influence from Kerrang! Directly by putting this
across the top, and making the colour scheme a basic black and white. I
also chose this as the main font simply because
• I found it eye-catching , and it’s people similar to my taste that are the
  audience
• Coverstar Incentive –
  makes the
                                                        reader more
                                                       interested in the
                                                       magazine
How does your media product
          represent certain social groups?
• My product is aimed at males into metal and hardcore music from teens to early 20s , which were my target with the
product. The main colour scheme being black and white also portrays an edge to the magazine, with the cracked effect on
the lettering same as in Kerrang! Magazine, targeted at the same audience. Slightly humorous, odd quotes are taken from
the interview on the double page spread, mocking “hipster” culture, in which “KiM” states “I never wear shoes onstage,
    they’re so mainstream.”
• I show the metal fan aspect by referencing one of the articles in there to “Avenged Sevenfold”, often idolised by most of the
key demographic., changing the fonts in colour when key terms were being featured in the text. (“The new Avenged
    Sevenfold…”)
• The contrast on the front cover then saturation on the photos from the magazine shows a variety but makes the photos
    individual to other magazines.
• All of the pictures in the magazine are quite aggressive and dark looking, reinforcing a stereotype behind the audience that
would be expected to buy the magazine, show in the photo underneath in which the artist isn’t even looking at the camera,
often used in all kinds of magazine, to make an artist look “Cool”, whereas a teenybopper magazine would be to make the
star look pretty or colourful or happy. The black based colour scheme of the backgrounds of the page.
Who would be the audience for your media
                   product?
• My audience would be people into the heavier scene of music around the town. Primarily “moshers, scene
kids, emos” and that general kind of stereotype. I did this by not using a great deal of contrast, between
15-24 as that’s when their interest/consumerism would be at its highest.
•

•

• This is because all of the genre portrayed by the magazine being advertised towards these groups but, also using ”Jagged” fonts like
Action of the Time New, which I use quite heavily throughout the magazine I liked this because it has the “Cracked” feeling, which I
found perfect for the subjects and genre of the magazine, another one I used was “Nowharehouse”, both from Dafont.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media
                        product and why?

• It would be directed at a publisher like Bauer Media Group, again, the same as Kerrang, but the general
theme of other published works I.E Q magazine fits with my magazines output in its colour and general
address of the audience. It could be sold at unsigned bands gigs at venues such as Manchester Academy,
The Roadhouse etc and grow into retailers such as WHSmith and newsagents.
•

• Kerrang logo (Bauer)
•

                       WTF! Logo

                     Q magazine (Bauer)
How did you attract/address your audience?

• A big factor is the repetition of the WTF idea. This is good because it’s a colloquial term but
has been changed in its meaning to fit the genre of the magazine.

-The audience were addressed informally, in an “in your face” kind of way, and the offer of a 4
track EP rather than a poster or a picture was more than a fair incentive for the readers to
    buy the magazine

• I used modern references (Such as “Jukepod Playlist”, a reference to the old style juke box
    mixed with the modern iPod.)
. What have you learnt about technologies
from the process of constructing this product?

• The discovery of a website like www.dafont.com was new, and that there
were websites you could download new fonts from for free was useful and
has inspired me to do more with it outside of college.
• Photoshop in general was new to me and layering images and text and
techniques like rasterizing the Shapes and layers were new.
• Another one was the use of Blue screen behind a photo was new. And the
use of focus to blur backgrounds etc.
• I was slow as a worker on Photoshop at first, but once I learnt to separate
layers enough and organise what I was doing it became a lot clearer, and
use tools like magic erase to get rid of precise parts of pictures I needed to
helped a lot in the process too.
• I've learnt Photoshop is probably the easier tool to use to edit photos and
  create covers.
. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you
feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the
                        full product?
• There was a lot more to the magazine than I expected. The use of the media packs as market
research was interesting and useful in finding what I needed to form the magazine.
                                                 - There was more to do with basic positioning of
letters around the cover picture, with clashing
background colours and things like that.
                                                   - I learnt how to use photoshop to place images
                                                   edit them and add text.
                                                - Paying attention to smaller details creates a much larger
sense of authenticity (Barcodes, issue number etc.)

-I have a better understanding of how to use programs to create and edit images and a better
understanding of fine detail and the way that magazines and the media is sold to its target audience
through market research and colour and font usage. The way that images are presented and who is
     on them.

                                             -

Greg Dixon Media Evaluation

  • 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products -on its level Mine uses a lot of devices similar to that of Kerrang. “Aggressive” fonts (Action of the time) and I used the contrast and shadow on the picture to replicate some of the cover • images used by the magazine. • - I attempted to keep a colour scheme aparent, but it looked a bit • plain simply black and white. I added in Odd red and yellow parts for effect and to keep the page material “fresh”. • - I used the title (Witness The Filth/WTF) as the slogan for most of • the links/offers in the magazine (save on future magazines… WTF?), challenging the convention of the regular slogan (life is loud etc.), this was the idea behind the title, connecting with the audience and making them feel part of the magazine, or at least on their level
  • 2. Final Front page • Masthead – I took my influence from Kerrang! Directly by putting this across the top, and making the colour scheme a basic black and white. I also chose this as the main font simply because • I found it eye-catching , and it’s people similar to my taste that are the audience • Coverstar Incentive – makes the reader more interested in the magazine
  • 3. How does your media product represent certain social groups? • My product is aimed at males into metal and hardcore music from teens to early 20s , which were my target with the product. The main colour scheme being black and white also portrays an edge to the magazine, with the cracked effect on the lettering same as in Kerrang! Magazine, targeted at the same audience. Slightly humorous, odd quotes are taken from the interview on the double page spread, mocking “hipster” culture, in which “KiM” states “I never wear shoes onstage, they’re so mainstream.” • I show the metal fan aspect by referencing one of the articles in there to “Avenged Sevenfold”, often idolised by most of the key demographic., changing the fonts in colour when key terms were being featured in the text. (“The new Avenged Sevenfold…”) • The contrast on the front cover then saturation on the photos from the magazine shows a variety but makes the photos individual to other magazines. • All of the pictures in the magazine are quite aggressive and dark looking, reinforcing a stereotype behind the audience that would be expected to buy the magazine, show in the photo underneath in which the artist isn’t even looking at the camera, often used in all kinds of magazine, to make an artist look “Cool”, whereas a teenybopper magazine would be to make the star look pretty or colourful or happy. The black based colour scheme of the backgrounds of the page.
  • 4. Who would be the audience for your media product? • My audience would be people into the heavier scene of music around the town. Primarily “moshers, scene kids, emos” and that general kind of stereotype. I did this by not using a great deal of contrast, between 15-24 as that’s when their interest/consumerism would be at its highest. • • • This is because all of the genre portrayed by the magazine being advertised towards these groups but, also using ”Jagged” fonts like Action of the Time New, which I use quite heavily throughout the magazine I liked this because it has the “Cracked” feeling, which I found perfect for the subjects and genre of the magazine, another one I used was “Nowharehouse”, both from Dafont.
  • 5. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? • It would be directed at a publisher like Bauer Media Group, again, the same as Kerrang, but the general theme of other published works I.E Q magazine fits with my magazines output in its colour and general address of the audience. It could be sold at unsigned bands gigs at venues such as Manchester Academy, The Roadhouse etc and grow into retailers such as WHSmith and newsagents. • • Kerrang logo (Bauer) • WTF! Logo Q magazine (Bauer)
  • 6. How did you attract/address your audience? • A big factor is the repetition of the WTF idea. This is good because it’s a colloquial term but has been changed in its meaning to fit the genre of the magazine. -The audience were addressed informally, in an “in your face” kind of way, and the offer of a 4 track EP rather than a poster or a picture was more than a fair incentive for the readers to buy the magazine • I used modern references (Such as “Jukepod Playlist”, a reference to the old style juke box mixed with the modern iPod.)
  • 7. . What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? • The discovery of a website like www.dafont.com was new, and that there were websites you could download new fonts from for free was useful and has inspired me to do more with it outside of college. • Photoshop in general was new to me and layering images and text and techniques like rasterizing the Shapes and layers were new. • Another one was the use of Blue screen behind a photo was new. And the use of focus to blur backgrounds etc. • I was slow as a worker on Photoshop at first, but once I learnt to separate layers enough and organise what I was doing it became a lot clearer, and use tools like magic erase to get rid of precise parts of pictures I needed to helped a lot in the process too. • I've learnt Photoshop is probably the easier tool to use to edit photos and create covers.
  • 8. . Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? • There was a lot more to the magazine than I expected. The use of the media packs as market research was interesting and useful in finding what I needed to form the magazine. - There was more to do with basic positioning of letters around the cover picture, with clashing background colours and things like that. - I learnt how to use photoshop to place images edit them and add text. - Paying attention to smaller details creates a much larger sense of authenticity (Barcodes, issue number etc.) -I have a better understanding of how to use programs to create and edit images and a better understanding of fine detail and the way that magazines and the media is sold to its target audience through market research and colour and font usage. The way that images are presented and who is on them. -
