4. Land pollution means degradation or
destruction of earth’s surface and soil,
directly or indirectly
as a result of human activities.
5. Land pollution
The deposition of solid or liquid waste material on
land or underground
• Deforestation and soil erosion,
• Agricultural and mining activities,
• Overcrowded landfills,
• Nuclear wastage,
• Sewage treatment
• Industrialization
CAUSES:
6. EFFECTS OF LAND POLLUTION ON
THE ENVIRONMENT:
Soil Pollution:
Soil pollution is another form of land
pollution, where the upper layer of the soil
is damaged.
7. ITALY: PROBLEMS OF LAND AND WATER
POLLUTION IN ABRUZZO
The condition of watercourses in Abruzzo, which are
increasingly polluted, is serious. The scandal of Bussi (Pescara)
and the more recent controversies related to the spills of
contaminated water from outside the laboratories of the Gran
Sasso Nuclear Physics are clear examples of water and land
pollution caused by the presence of toxic waste.
8. Water pollution
Water pollution is the contamination of water
bodies. This form of environmental degradation
occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly
discharged into water bodies without adequate
treatment to remove harmful compounds
10. Examples of soil
contaminations: the
introduction of
harmful objects,
chemicals or
substances directly
or indirectly into
the soilDischarges of toxis
waste in Bussi (Pescara)
11. •The Greenhouse effect,
•Global Warming
•Acid rains
•Floods
The Greenhouse effect is a natural effect that
keeps our Planet warm. But now the greenhouse
gases produced by human activities are trapping the
Sun radiation and causing the climate change
14. A state of emergency was declared by the local authorities in the Region of Abruzzo after
floods causing damage to homes, roads and commercial buildings and activities. Heavy rainfall
from surrounding mountains and hills soon ran into the the towns along the coastal area.
15. Floods
Bad weather: flooding in Abruzzo, closed schools,
streets and basements have flooded, the Pescara
river is overflowing; in Silvi, part of the belvedere
collapses; Teramo saves a woman stuck in the car.

18. Erosion of the coasts is the process in which beaches
tend to disappear because of sea storms and drifts.

20. THE DISASTER OF RIGOPIANO
On the morning of 18 January, three earthquakes
with a magnitude greater than 5.0, attributed to
replicas of the earthquake of Amatrice, affected
central Italy :
at 10:25 (ML 5.3), at 11:14
(ML 5.4) and 11:25 am
(ML 5.3)
21. THE DISASTER OF RIGOPIANO
The avalanche of Rigopiano was an event
that occurred on January 18, 2017 in
Abruzzo. The Slavina has
invested the Rigopiano-Gran Sasso Resort
hotel causing twenty-nine victims. This
is the most serious tragedy caused by an
avalanche in Italy.
22. Air pollution in the North of Italy
Air pollution in urban areas is commonly called smog.
This type of pollution is a problem for the health of
humans, animals and plants.
25. Milan and Turin, have introduced traffic
restrictions to tackle air pollution and
smog.
26. Bans on certain types of vehicle have been
introduced temporarily in Milan and Turin, both of
which have exceeded safe limits for pollution in
recent days.
