7. ITALY: PROBLEMS OF LAND AND WATER
POLLUTION IN ABRUZZO
The condition of watercourses in Abruzzo, which are
increasingly polluted, is serious. The scandal of Bussi (Pescara)
and the more recent controversies related to the spills of
contaminated water from outside the laboratories of the Gran
Sasso Nuclear Physics are clear examples of water and land
pollution caused by the presence of toxic waste.

14. A state of emergency was declared by the local authorities in the Region of Abruzzo after
floods causing damage to homes, roads and commercial buildings and activities. Heavy rainfall
from surrounding mountains and hills soon ran into the the towns along the coastal area.

Bad weather: flooding in Abruzzo, closed schools,
streets and basements have flooded, the Pescara
river is overflowing; in Silvi, part of the belvedere
collapses; Teramo saves a woman stuck in the car.

18. Erosion of the coasts is the process in which beaches
tend to disappear because of sea storms and drifts.

20. THE DISASTER OF RIGOPIANO
On the morning of 18 January, three earthquakes
with a magnitude greater than 5.0, attributed to
replicas of the earthquake of Amatrice, affected
central Italy :
at 10:25 (ML 5.3), at 11:14
(ML 5.4) and 11:25 am
(ML 5.3)

21. THE DISASTER OF RIGOPIANO
The avalanche of Rigopiano was an event
that occurred on January 18, 2017 in
Abruzzo. The Slavina has
invested the Rigopiano-Gran Sasso Resort
hotel causing twenty-nine victims. This
is the most serious tragedy caused by an
avalanche in Italy.
