How to keep your computer and personal information safe when downloading from the Internet: Once in a while you may try to download something from a site that contains viruses made to steal your personal information and/or harm your computer. This can be quite common on peer to peer and bit- torrent sites. Many sites like CNET and Softpedia.com claim to scan and make sure that software downloads on their sites are safe. Another good habit is to make sure to turn on the status bar in the browser. By rolling over an link or download before clicking, information will show up in the status bar about the link. If it is something you don’t recognize or it looks suspicious, don’t click . Always make sure to check the address bar at the top of the browser to make sure that the site you see is pointing to the right URL. If you are transferring personal information make sure the page is secure (padlock). * Talk about some of the available antivirus software that is available. Eg. Norton, McAfee are the most common commercial grade software. AVG is the most common free software ( http:// free.avg.com /ca-en/homepage ). *BitTorrent is used to distribute large amounts of data through peer to peer file sharing .
