This document provides an overview of natural gas discoveries in the eastern Mediterranean sea. It discusses the history of exploration in the region going back 80 years, with more significant discoveries being made starting in the late 1990s and 2000s including the Tamar and Leviathan fields off Israel. The geology of the region is described, focusing on the Levant Basin which covers parts of Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Cyprus and contains an estimated 3,450 BCM of natural gas. Recent significant discoveries are discussed including the Aphrodite field off Cyprus.
