CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
1.1. Topic Background
International students and workers must take a standardized test of English to
move into higher levels of education and employment. There are three popular
tests that universities or employers can use. They are the Test of English as a
Foreign Language, TOEFL, the Test of English for International
Communication, TOEIC, and the International English Language Testing
System, IELTS.
However, not everyone knows about this certificate as well as about the function,
the way of taking the test, the knowledge in each type of degree, thereby, they
choose to study the inappropriate degree, and this takes time and money that
does not serve the work they need. For this reason, this thesis deals with "
Compare the writing part of the three types of international English exams:
TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS”
1.2. Rationale
English language is considered the key to opening many opportunities for
success in life and that key requires you to pass exams to get valuable English
certificates. However, there are too many international English exams, making
people confused when choosing suitable type for them.
Before deciding to study English, you need to identify the exact certificate you
want to get depending on the purpose such as studying abroad, settling down,
working abroad and then researching on each exam structure to choose the type
of degree which is suitable for the learners' needs and abilities. An exam

structure usually has 4 parts (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) and a lot of
learners can not do well in writing part and there are many reasons to follow
such as wrong topic, less time, wrong grammar,,, for the same reason, this essay
with the subject "Compare the writing part of the three types of international
English exams: TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS" is researched with the desire to
help learners master the written exam structure of 3 international English
certificates such as TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS to learn to prepare the best for
their exams. To help readers choose the right type of certificate and perfect their
writing test, the researcher will focus on finding answers through comparing the
3 writing sections of TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS.
1.3. Research Questions
This thesis will focus on answering the following question: “What are the
similarities and differences among TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS writing part?”

CHAPTER II: LITERRATURE REVIEW
2.1. TOEIC
2.1.1. Overview about TOEIC
Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) is a test to assess
English proficiency for people, who use English as a foreign language (not a
native language), especially those who want to use English to communicate and
work internationally. To the TOEIC certidicate, it has two years valid following
the test
TOEIC has two main types: TOEIC Listening & Reading Test and TOEIC
Speaking & Writing Test.
TOEIC Listening & Reading Test: This test tests the listening and reading
skills, lasts 2 hours, including 45 minutes for listening and 75 minutes for
reading, the number of questions is 200 (100 questions each) and both are
Multiple choice questions with multiple choice answers. Score: between 5
- 495 points per section, and the entire test is 10 to 990. (In Vietnam, the
TOEIC Listening and Reading format is common)
TOEIC Speaking & Writing Test: This test tests the speaking and writing
skills and takes about 80 minutes, including 20 minutes in speaking and 60
minutes in writing. The speaking section will check on pronunciation,
intonation and stress, vocabulary, grammar, matching, and complete the
sentences. The writing part will test grammar, vocabulary, find sentences
that match the picture, state personal views, Score: each part will be from
0 - 200 points.

Important: You can choose to take both skills or only take one of the 2
tests (Speaking or Writing). In contrast to the Listening and Reading tests,
you are required to take both skills.
2.1.2. Exam Structure of TOEIC
TOEIC Speaking & Writing takes about 80 minutes, including 20 minutes in
speaking and 60 minutes in writing.
2.1.3. Writing part of TOEIC
TOEIC Speaking and Writing consists of 8 questions, they test grammar,
vocabulary, find sentences that match the picture, state personal views with score
of each part will be from 0 - 200 points.
2.2. TOEFL
2.2.1. Overview about TOEFL
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test to
measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in
English-speaking universities. It is accepted by many English-speaking academic
and professional institutions. To the TOEFL certidicate, it has two years valid
following the test (ETS, 2020).
For TOEFL, there are 4 types:
TOEFL Primary: TOEFL Primary is the latest English language
proficiency test that ETS has researched specifically for elementary
students to improve thinking skills for children from an early age (IIG,
2020).

TOEFL Junior: specially designed by ETS for high school students to
assess students' English proficiency in both academic and social fields
(IIG, 2020).
TOEFL iBT: TOEFL iBT is a test in the "TOEFL Family" system
designed and developed by the United States Educational Testing Service
(ETS). The test is only for people who use English as a foreign language
to assess the ability to use English comprehensively in 4 skills: Listening,
Speaking, Reading, and Writing in an academic environment. In this
thesis, we will talk about this type because this type is most popular in
Vietnam (IIG, 2020).
TOEFL ITP: The TOEFL ITP test is an English proficiency test for people
whose native language is not English (IIG, 2020).
2.2.2. Exam Structure of TOEFL
The TOEFL iBT test lasts 4 hours and consists of 4 parts (Listening, Speaking,
Reading, and Writing), which requires candidates to have a good command of 4
skills (ETS, 2020).
The content of the test focuses on the use of English in an academic
environment.

2.2.3. Writing part of TOEFL
In writing part, TOEFL iBT consists of 2 questions with 2 different forms within
50 minutes, specifically:
(Integrated) Part: Test takers are required to read a short paragraph within
3 minutes (230 to 300 words), and then listen to a short lecture on the
same topic as the text for 2 minutes. Write a summary of what you hear
regarding the reading.
(Independent) Part: Ask to raise your thoughts about a common topic, or
popular topic. Competitors must give specific reasons and examples to
express their opinions.
2.3. IELTS
2.3.1. Overview about IELTS
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most
popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global
migration. To the IELTS certidicate, it has two years valid following the test
(British Council, 2020).
There are two IELTS tests available - IELTS Academic, IELTS General
Training and IELTS Bridge.
IELTS Academic measures whether your level of English language
proficiency is suitable for an academic environment. It reflects aspects of
academic language and evaluates whether you’re ready to begin training
or studying (British Council, 2020).

IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a
practical, everyday context. The tasks and tests reflect both workplace and
social situations (British Council, 2020)..
2.3.2. Exam Structure of IELTS
The IELTs Academic test lasts for 2 hours 45 minutes and consists of 4 parts:
Listening - IELTS Listening Test: 30 minutes
Reading - IELTS Reading Test: 60 minutes
Writing - IELTS Writing Test: 60 minutes
Speaking - IELTS Speaking Test: 11-15 minutes.
2.3.3. Writing part of IELTS
Academic IELTS: consists of 2 different tasks, lasting for 60 minutes.
Task 1: Candidates are required to write a report of about 150 words to
describe, explain the data of a chart, tables or procedures, etc.
Task 2: You need to write an essay of 250 words, giving controversial
ideas about an idea and / or social issue.

CHAPTER III: RESEACH METHOD
3.1. Participants
Participants are students taking the IELTs, TOEIC and TOEFL international
certificates, specifically:
Students (19) take the IELTS exam will attend to answer the questionaires
after the test, 3 of them will join the short interview lasting 5 minutes.
Students (25) taking the TOEIC exam will attend to answer the
questionaires after the test, 3 of them will join the short interview lasting 5
minutes.
Students (18) taking TOEFL exam will attend to answer the questionaires
after the test, 3 of them will join the short interview lasting 5 minutes.
3.1.1 non- English major students
A total 300 students of three English learning classes from different major at
Viet Nhat College of Languages and Technology participated in study. All
subjects had studied English formally for 3 years in Viet Nhat College of
Languages and Technlogy. The subjects ranged in age from 18 to 20.

3.2. Instrument
Data collection instrument includes questionnaire and interview.
Questionnaires are used to consult with all test takers about the structure
of the writing section. I prepared the survey and gave it to the test takers
after they finished the exam, knowing that they were tired after the
stressful exam time, so the survey I gave was quite simple, short, they only
needed 3 minutes to complete the survey, but I also tried to meet all the
information I was looking for

Interview was launched to interview the feelings of some test takers on the
written test. For the interview, I only interviewed 3 people for each type of
certificate because after taking the survey, the test takers were quite tired
because they had previously gone through a very stressful time to take the
test. The interview took only 1-2 minutes, the content was about the
evaluation of the test takers about the writing part (easy/difficult), why?
3.3. Schedule
In order to get the latest and most accurate information of these 3 certificates, I
have come to test centers to conduct surveys and interviews with the following
specific time:
For TOEFL iBT data, the researcher went to IIG Vietnam – Ha Noi on Jan
11, 2020 for the survey and interview.
For TOEIC data, the researcher went to IIG Vietnam – Ha Noi Branch on
Jan 12, 2020 for the survey and interview.
For IELTS data, the researcher went to Atlantic Five-Star English on Jan
16, 2020 for the survey and interview.

- In term of its usage of:
+ The TOEIC Writing tests include tasks that people might perform in work-
related situations or in familiar daily activities that are common across
cultures. The tests assess English language speaking and writing proficiency
and do not require test takers to have specialized knowledge of business. The
Writing test responses are also sent to ETS’s Online Scoring Network and
scored by certified ETS raters.
+ The TOEFL Writing tests include academic content. This article has two
sections but the integrated essay is considered difficult, because it does not
provide available content for the contestant to understand and write
immediately, it combines reading and listening skills, so if the test takers can
not read and listen well, they may go out of the topic. In general this part
requires a combination of skills.
+ Although the IELTS Writing tests also include academic content have 2
sections like TOEFL iBT writing parts, they are different in many ways. In
the first task, the test takers have to spot the most important and relevant
information and trends in a graph, chart, table, or diagram, and to provide a
structured overview of that information in their own words. In order to
complete well this task, the test takers have to master the words related graph,
chart, table, or diagram and the structure to write this essays while the second
task requires the test takers to present a well-structured argument, backing it
with examples and evidence in clear, correct language.
Another big difference is that they have their own bank score descriptor

+ IELTS task writing band descriptors follow 4 criteria: Task Achievement,
Coherence and Cohesion Lexical, Resource; Grammatical Range and
Accuracy
+ TOEIC task writing band descriptors: Typically, test takers at level 190-200
(can create connected sustained discourse appropriate to the typical
workplace. When they express opinions or respond to complicated requests,
their speech is highly intelligible. Their use of basic and complex grammar is
good and their use of vocabulary is accurate and precise. Test takers at level 8
can also use spoken language to answer questions and give basic information.
Their pronunciation and intonation and stress are at all times highly
intelligible.
+ TOEFL task Writing band descriptors: Test takers who receive a writing
section score at the advanced level (24- 30) are typically able to write in
English on a wide range of academic and nonacademic topics with
confidence and clarity. Test takers who score at the Advanced level typically
can:
■ Produce clear, well-developed, and well-organized text; ungrammatical,
unclear, or unidiomatic use of English is rare.
■ Express an opinion on a controversial issue, and support that opinion with
appropriate details and explanations in writing, demonstrating variety and
range of vocabulary and grammatical structures.

■ Select important information from multiple sources, integrate it, and
present it coherently and clearly in writing, with only occasional minor
imprecision in the summary of the source information.
Evaluation on writing part of TOEIC Speaking and Writing, TOEFL iBT
and TOEIC Writing
TOEIC Speaking and Writing Test: written part of the test is rated well by
students because it does not require too high knowledge, learners find that
writing preparation does not take much time and thereby, learners complete
well without feeling too much pressure.
For the IELTS test, learners feel quite good because there are only two main
parts so students can easily focus on these two parts. Task 2 is considered by
most students to be difficult because this section asks about new information
in life; learners do not have much vocabulary to express what they want to
say. Besides, 60 minutes for this rather difficult writing test is not enough.
In term of TOEFL, this is probably the most difficult English certificate.
Many students said that they were confused when they had to read and listen
at the same time, and most of them failed to meet the requirements of the test.

CHAPTER V: CONCLUSION
5.1. Limitations
Limitation provides barriers that researcher encounter in the survey process as
well as during the study. There are many things that researcher cannot control,
which greatly influences research results, making the survey inaccurate and
unreliable. Below are the limitations that we can easily see.
The results are based entirely on small number of participants so the
results are not highly precise.
In fact, there is not much research on comparison on writing part of these
three tests and this also limits the data source for reference.
Researcher can not choose more people to participate due to the influence
of the scope of research.
Due to the disallowed condition, the researcher was only given a very
small sample, only a few people could participate in the survey, so the
survey questions are chosen as general as possible to get general
information.
