Nuclear Atomic Nuclear Reactor Was Brought Online
On December 2nd, 1942, the Chicago Pile 1 nuclear reactor was brought online. It was the
world s first, and the beginning of a movement that would come to shape the world s energy
resources for decades to come. Since that day, nuclear power has peaked at ten percent of the
world s total energy resources in 2011 (International Energy Agency), and has fueled not only
power grids across the globe, but a heated debate about the viability, environmental impact, and
ethical concerns of using nuclear fission and radioactive chemical reactions as a public energy
source. The most widespread arguments against its use all revolve around a trio of disastrous
reactor failures spanning the last three decades: the meltdown on Three Mile Island, the... Show

Barely a year later, on March 28, 1979, the second of the station s pair of reactors had been shut
down for refueling and routine maintenance, during which an attempt to clear a blockage
resulting in a clogged instrument line which would lead to a shutdown of several different water
and coolant pumps later in the evening. With the steam generators no longer receiving water, the
heat and caused the reactor to perform an emergency shutdown. Within eight seconds, control
rods were inserted into the core to halt the nuclear chain reaction. Because steam was no longer
being fed into the turbine, however, heat was no longer being removed from the reactor. When
the water pumps had stopped, three auxiliary pumps activated automatically. Their valves had
been closed for routine maintenance, however, leaving them unable to pump any water. Closing
all three valves at once was a violation of Nuclear Regulatory Commission policy, and one of the
primary causes of the reactor s partial meltdown (Mahaffey 329). When the auxiliary pumps failed
to come online, a relief valve should have opened as a tertiary safety mechanism to release heat
and pressure. It was prevented from doing do due to a mechanical fault, but poorly designed
instrumentation made this difficult for operators to discover. As a result of improper training and
complex instrumentation, it took several hours and a new shift of workers before

Grip Strength Experiment
This experiment was conducted to see if icing certain muscles in the arm affects grip strength.
An electromyogram and dynamometer was used to test this theory. An electromyogram (EMG)
is used to record muscles contraction, and a dynamometer is used to test grip strength. The
superficial muscles in the forearm that contract when something is being gripped are flexor
carpi radialis, brachioradialis, flexor carpi ulnaris, and flexor digitorum superficialis muscles.
When muscles are fatigued, often times after sports practice or a game, ice is usually the go to.
Some athletes take ice baths to relax their body so the muscles don t get sore. This experiment
will prove if ice relaxes the muscles in the forearm and makes the grip weaker as the muscles are
cold.

A baseline test was measured for all of the participants. The ground electrode was placed on the
boney part of the anterior side of the wrist. The negative input was set on the flexor carpi radialis
muscle, and the positive input was placed on the brachioradialis muscle both on the right arm.
The dynamometer was placed in the right hand without any pressure on it and the participant
laid his/her arm on the table in a relaxed position. The EMG started the muscle reading while the
arm was in a relaxed position, and then the participant quickly squeezed the dynamometer as
hard as they could for a second or two. A week later the same participants laid their arm on a
frozen ice pack, big enough to cover the whole forearm, for fifteen minutes straight. The
electrodes were then placed in the same exact spots, and the test was taken exactly like the
baseline tests were. During these tests all of the cords for each electrode was laid on the table so
they were not crossing or touching each other while the measurements were being

Essay about Macroeconomics
You may have already studied microeconomics, which looks at supply, demand and prices for
individual goods. Macroeconomics looks at the bigger picture and involves the study of the
economy as a whole.
National income
Let us start by looking at a simple example a
two sector economy made up of households
(consumers) and firms (producers) and use this to develop the idea of national income. To start with
we will ignore the impact of government policy and overseas sectors.
Households ultimately own the factors of production, e.g., labour, materials and capital, and supply
these factors to firms who use them to produce goods and services. In return households earn
rewards for supplying the firms with the factors of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This model will use the following definitions: Consumption (C) consumption goods produced and
sold to customers i.e., the chairs.
Savings (S) income that is not spent on consumption. Investment (I) production of, or expenditure
on, non consumption goods (carried out by firms) including expenditure on increasing stocks of
consumption goods.
Injections expenditure on domestic output not originating from consumers e.g., investment.
Leakages income not spent on consumption of domestic output e.g., savings.
Consumers will not spend all their income on goods and services. They will also have savings
income not spent on consumption. Similarly producers will not just spend on producing goods but
will also carry out investment expenditure on non consumption goods.
There are therefore injections into (investment) and leakages from (savings) the circular flow.
These injections and leakages can now be added to the circular flow model (see Figure 2)
Figure 2
Notes to Figure 2
In this model the income earned by households (Y) must be equal to expenditure on purchasing
national product (E). Output of consumption goods by firms equals consumption expenditure by
household s (C). Note that households do not spend all their income instead they save (S) a leakage.
Expenditure on non consumption goods by firms is investment (I) an injection.
Income (Y) = Expenditure (E)

Interracial Marriages In The United States
Diversity in cultures throughout the world can often create obstacles when developing
relationships. However, despite years of desegregation, social and cultural differences still exist.
One of the differences that still exist is the institution of marriage. This is especially true when it
comes to the topic of interracial marriages. Which has been described as a marriagebetween
members of two different races. Even though, it has not been that long ago since interracial
marriage has been made legal throughout the entire United States. It continues to be one of the
biggest conflicts in society today, considering everyone has their different viewpoints on the topic.
Since these types of marriages are considered to be an exception rather than a norm, many couples
continue to encounter various issues.
Racism has continued to be an ongoing issue in the United States. In the early years of colonization,
interracial marriages were made illegal in the United States. The biggest problem America faced
with interracial relationships arose during the slavery era. During this time period, it became
extremely common for plantation owners to sexually abuse African American women. Many were
raped by white males, which has helped lead to the ugly shadow cast on relationships between black
women and white men (Smedley). When slavery became institutionalized in the United States,
several anti miscegenation laws surfaced which implemented racial segregation on marriages and
relationships.

Essay on Artist Pain Exposed in Kafka s A Hunger Artist
Artist Pain Exposed in Kafka s A Hunger Artist
In A Hunger Artist , Kafka comments on the life of the modern artist through the life of a hunger
artist. Kafka comments that the modern artist is always dissatisfied with his or her art. The modern
artist also is trapped in a harsh and capricious world, in which the artist struggles to maintain his or
her audience by pushing the extreme, but are cheated because they do not receive his or her
recognition. Finally, in A HungerArtist Kafka refers to the modern artist s struggle between the
need for fame and the need for isolation. As a modern artist, Kafka has experienced the qualities
that characterize the modern artist and his experiences have greatly influenced his work, ... Show

In A Hunger Artist the artist joins the circus and wants to astound the world by setting a fasting
record. However, the more the artist fasted the more the crowds ignored him. Critic R.O.C.
Winkler suggests that the crowds ignored the artist because of a corruption in the relationships
between humans.iii[iii] The corruption is seen when a passer by stopped and looked at the old
figure on the sign and spoke of swindling . The comment made by the passer by cheated the
hunger artist of his recognition, and showed the world s inborn malice and indifference . The
hunger artist s eroded cage, comprised of dirty and illegible placards, the pointless sign tracking the
days of the fast and dirty straw, further signified the corruption in the relationship between the
hunger artist and the world. During Kafka s lifetime he saw a shift in his audience s attention and
felt alienated by modern society.iv
As the hunger artist sought the crowd s attention he was also trapped in another struggle between
his need for fame and his need for isolation. The struggle is seen when the artist s cage was set up
near the animals in the circus. As people walked to the menagerie they saw the artist and some
stayed and stared and others rushed off to see the animals. Ironically, the artist disliked the people

Trophy Hunting Research Paper
Uproar Surrounding Trophy Hunting
The continent of Africa provides a home to biodiversity unlike anywhere else. Many endangered
species roam the various biomes that call Africa home. Trophy hunting has been a popular activity
for many decades; many well known individuals such as the Theodore Roosevelt participated.
Trophy hunting is hotly debated within the scientific community; Lucille Palazy, who works for the
University of Paris, introduces this, Trophy hunting is one of the most controversial issues in the
field of biodiversity conservation... (Palazy, Lucille, et al. 1). This debate has many main supporters
and opponents; these include trophy hunters, conservationists, and the population of the country
involved. Palazy elaborates on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some researchers such as Nuzzo and Traill, who work at Imperial College London and are
published in the African Journal of Ecology, feel as though not enough research has been done on
the topic. Nuzzo and Traill studied data from the years of 1960 to 2011. They conclude, ...[we]
cannot draw any strong conclusions... this research emphasizes the need for population level
monitoring programmes, (Nuzzo, Marcella C, and Lochran W. Traill 253). Conservationists such as
Michael Paul Nelson choose to evaluate the issue through an ethical stance. Nelson introduces an
important idea within conservation, consequentialism. Nelson states, consequentialism is... the end
justifies the means... Consequentialist thinking is common in conservation, (Nelson, Michael Paul,
et al. 303). This idea must be taken into consideration when trying to solve the issue. Other
conservationists are strongly against trophy hunting, such as Peter Lindsey. Lindsey works at the
University of Pretoria and Panthera, a conservation association dedicated to lions. In one of his
studies, Trophy Hunting of African Lions... , Lindsey et al. studies data from the government of
South Africa and data on lion hunting quotas and legal hunting areas. Lindsey et al. produce a firm
opinion; ...there remain several problems associated with the negative management of lion hunting
which may perpetuate negative impacts, (Lindsey, Peter Andrew, et al. 9). In another of Lindsey s
articles, he discusses the differences between wild trophy hunting as opposed to captive bred lions
being trophy hunting. Lindsey summarizes, Some trophy hunting organizations...differentiate
between the shooting of captive bred lions and that of wild lions, (Lindsey, P., et al. 20). This
important caveat can skew data collected depending if the organization data gathered from

Anthrax Case Study
Bioterrorism threat such as anthrax infection is technically and fundamentally different from other
potential attacks like nuclear, explosives, or chemical weapons. Considering the nature of
bioweapons, it requires a different strategy of preparations that will prepare and comfort individuals
in the location (Jaton Greub, 2014). Meaning full progress regarding the threat will range from
understanding the disease context to adhering to community beliefs that guide their faith in case of
any life threatening circumstances. This paper discusses the relevant actions that will respond to
the attacks in regard to faith of the Jewish community and the regulation that prevail in the heath
domain.
Jews believe that God assists those who assist themselves, and so should look for alternative
measures to curb potential threats (The Hallowed Path, 2011). In this case, the Jews will strive
hard to acquire a cell free anthrax vaccine. There are no doubts that Anthrax vaccine exists in small
quantity and are only available for military individuals. The healthcare personnel will, therefore,
collaborate with state and local health departments to avail the immunization or opt for oral
preventive measures that are readily available such as ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, or
levofloxacin (Bower et al., 2015). The action will comfort the depressive encounter since they will

US Embassy To Jerusalem Research Paper
Why the United States Should Move its Israeli Embassy to Jerusalem In every country of the
world, the United States is required by law to have an embassy in the capital except for one
crucial area, the country of Israel. Since the nation s existence, Israel has had a noticeable drought
of embassies in its capital city of Jerusalem, including its strongest and most important ally in the
United States. This is because both the Israelis and Palestinians claim this land as their own, and
has led to conflict for decades. Countries choose not to put an embassy in Jerusalem because they
do not wish to take a side in the matter. While some may say that establishing its embassy to
Jerusalem would incite violence in the region, the United States should move forward with this

Perhaps the greatest reason for moving the embassy to Jerusalem is the fact that the United
States could actively oversee peace talks between the Israeli people and the Palestinians in an
area that both sides claim to own. This important benefit of the move is laid out by Robert
Stearns in his article, Moving the Embassy to Jerusalem shows that the U.S. is Committed to
Peace when he explains, It would signal that the U.S. is serious about ending this conflict, which
would be a benefit to Israelis and Palestinians, (Stearns 4). Being able to be a part of the talks to
resolve decades of tension and war is in a large sense, the biggest benefit of moving the embassy to
the capital city. The absence of an embassy in Jerusalem has gotten the peace talks nowhere, and

The Greed Cycle Essay
Article Review: The Greed Cycle, by John Cassidy
The article by Thomas Cassidy, points out the instrumental role that greed plays in the modern
corporation. Modern Economists have always seen greed as not only a necessary element in the
corporate environment, but as also a vital part of the successful evolution of a public company. As
the article points out, Economists from Adam Smith to Milton Friedman have seen greed as an
inevitable and, in some ways, desirable feature of capitalism. In a well regulated and well balanced
economy, greed helps to keep the system expanding .
In the early public companies, greed was not seen as a danger, as the implicit trust that managers
would not slack off, and would run the company in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They went on to state that competition would not solve this dilemma. This lead to a re evaluation
of the goal of corporations, from merely maximizing revenues, to maximize the value of the firm, as
it was determined in the stock market.
Once the goal of corporations became maximizing the value of the firm, they attracted wealthy
corporate raiders , who used this new corporate philosophy to launch many takeover attempts on
companies, with the intent on restructuring these companies, as to increase their stock prices, so that
they can refloat them for a considerable profit. Most of these takeovers were financed with
borrowed money, hence the term leverВaged buyouts, or LBOs. As the article states, In a typical
LBO, the acquirer would buy out the public stockholders and run the comВpany as a private
concern, slashing costs and slimming it down. The ultimate aim was to refloat the company on the
stock market at a higher valuation . Initially this was seen as one of the best remedies for the
agency issues that surfaced between shareholders and mangers. However as the economic climate
changed, many realized that the LBO was not the answer. When the economy went into a

Essay on Two Research Studies into Animal Navigation
Two Research Studies into Animal Navigation
Keeton conducted a study regarding the ability of pigeon s to navigate. It was suggested that
pigeons are able to detect the earth s magnetic field, and therefore navigate with this aid. An
experiment carried out to explore this possibility. Small magnets were attached to the heads of
pigeons which were then released in unfamiliar surroundings. The magnets were designed to disrupt
any detection of the earth s magnetic field. The pigeon s ability to find it s way back to it s home
loft was then observed. It was found that the pigeons had difficulty returning home on overcast
days, but had very little difficultly doing so on clear, sunny days. This ... Show more content on

path s were at a 90 degree angle from the path s of the normal butterflies. This suggested that the

time of day they believed it to be. It was also found that the butterflies did not respond to changes in
magnetic fields suggesting that their primary compass system is based on the sun.
b) Assess what these studies can tell us about homing and/or migration.
Both studies suggest that animals do not necessarily use just one method to navigate. Keeton s
studies shows pigeon s to use both magnetic field and the sun depending on the weather condition.
This demonstrates that animals are able to adapt their navigational strategy accordingly as it is
essential for survival. However, in Mouritsen and Frost s experiment, it was suggested that
butterflies only utilise one strategy of navigation; the sun. Even in cloudy conditions butterflies are
said to use patterns of polarised light visible through the clouds. In this case, the idea that animals
adapt to different weather conditions cannot be put forward. The butterflies were able to navigate
their direction even when the sun was not actually present. This puts forward the idea that animals
do not necessarily

Research Paper On Pony
Looking for the perfect pony? Who isn t? Good ponies those who can teach kids the ropes when it
comes to horsemanship are said to be worth their weight in gold.
What exactly is a pony, by definition? How does it differ from what we call a horse? Well, a pony
is, in fact, a horse. Ponies are a sub classification of light horses, which are those used for riding.
The main difference between a pony and a horse is that a pony is under 14.2 hands. To this end, just
about any horse who meets the height requirement can be shown in pony classes. However, there
are certain breeds where all the individuals registered must meet pony requirements. These are
called pony breeds.

hands. Because of their Appaloosa heritage, they come in a wide variety of coat patterns. POAs
work well for both riding and driving.
Connemara
The Connemara is an Irish pony that has Arabian horses in its ancestry. Connemaras are known
for being one of the taller pony breeds, as many of them stand in the 14.2 hand range.
Connemaras are often gray or black, although registry rules also allow them to be brown, bay, or
dun. Connemaras have very smooth gaits, are willing learners, and are often very athletic. They
excel in a wide variety of disciplines, from riding to driving, and are well suited to both children
and driving adults.
When looking at ponies, there are several breeds from which to choose. Knowing certain breed
characteristics will help you determine if the pony you are looking at is a good representative of
his breed. Good luck finding the perfect pony!

I Am Not A Patriot Analysis
Why I Am Not a Patriot
(Terms and Conditions May Apply)
Standard dictionaries define patriotism as a love for or devotion to one s country. While this offers
a succinct introduction to the notion of patriotism, a comprehensive account of the subject extends
well beyond the scope of any singular definition. In his defense of Modern Patriotism, Stephen
Nathanson addresses the hesitation that people face when forced to adopt or reject the patriot
label. Indeed, the modern conception of a patriot carries implications of blind allegiance and
excessive nationalism. Alternatively, to say that one is not a patriot suggests that one lacks the
loyalty appropriate to citizens. I open this discussion with the inner dialogue I faced when asked ...

While few advocates of patriotism would argue against the value of adopting patriotic beliefs,
the touchstone of patriotism involves a readiness to act for your country. Kateb interprets this as
a readiness to die and to kill, for one s country. However, his claims can be easily countered; even
if full fledged patriotism does involve a willingness to die for one s country it is not defined by it.
Instead a true patriot promises to uphold and advance a set of principles, even when his country
does not. The U.S. supreme court notes that an informed public is the most potent of all restraints
upon misgovernment. After all, patriotism, however social in nature, is a political

Jean Valjean Archetypes
At the end of the day there are only two great archetypes in literature: Jean Valjean the Apostle
E.F. opposite Michael Corleone and Iago. To watch someone rise to the pinnacle of creation or fall
to its lowest depths, these are the types of stories that instantly gain our attention. What draws Man
to such stories? Perhaps it lies in the ability of the epic to show the two paths that lie before him,
eternal fulfillment or everlasting guilt. Not only does the musical Les Miserables examine multiple
dimensions of the paths but it also contains the reasoning behind their existence. In other words, not
only is the disease and its progress shown, but also the catching of it in the first place. On top of that

An Analysis Of Astrophil And Stella By Sir Philip Sidney
How can we record a love so deep it lasts a life time? In Astrophil and Stella, Sir Philip Sidney
does just this, creating a chronological sequence of 108 sonnets, depicting the longing and futile
adoration of the speaker Astrophil towards his love interest Stella. It has been widely noted that the
sonnets may be a reflection of Sidney s own life, after his infamous love of Penelope Devereux
following their meeting in 1575, which is said to have lasted through her marriage to another man,
and up until his untimely death in 1583. Sonnet31, the sonnet I will be mainly discussing in this
essay, is undeniably the most famous of Sidney s sonnets. This sonnet utilises Sidney s favourite
Italian rhyme scheme ABBA CDCD EE, paired with his preferred Italian sonnet style, including
an octave, followed by a sestet, and a turn in line 8. This writing style not native to the English
Language displays Sidney s mastery in conveying his emotional anguish a skill which elevates him
as a loved and dearly missed poet of the Elizabethan era. The poem employs iambic pentameter,
showing Sidney s marriage of typically English meter with a continental writing style, which creates
a beautifully complex narrative of a pining love. The strict meter creates a steady and somewhat
lyrical rhyme scheme, which adds a romantic essence of sound to the sonnet, almost as if Astrophil
is attempting to serenade Stella throughout the collection of poetry, unfortunately, to no
avail.Sonnet 31

Examples Of Ulses As A Bad Leader
Ulysses is a bad leader.Although Ulysses seems like a good leader, he makes poor decisions and
kills all his men leading people to only conclude that he is a bad leader. First of all he gets his men
in a mess with a very powerful god. Second half of his crew and two of his ships are lost to giant
cannibals yet he still ventured homeward. Third he killed all of his men, and still went home
without a care about any of his men or how their family feels. That is why Ulysses is a bad leader.
He may be quick witted but he is dangerous. He puts the rest of his men in danger. Ulysses is a bad

them are killed. In the Cyclopes cave Ulyses men died and yet he did not tell the Cyclops to eat
him.Now Posideon is after him and his crew for Ulysses mistake. A good leader would killhimself

Herbicide Roundup Research Paper
How Long Does it Take Roundup to Work?
Weeds the cause of misery and a curse to gardeners everywhere, and the sooner they are gone the
better. Fortunately, the herbicide Roundup takes on their robust and bothersome growth and
quickly decimates their population, which allows more time for outdoor enjoyment than warring
with weeds. Wherever you have unwanted growth, Roundup makes a product to tackle the crisis
and with most, visible results are obvious in just a few hours after applying.
Roundup s Family of Products
Monsanto created and distributed the original Roundup back in 1974, which was an herbicide with
glyphosate as its main ingredients. Even today when one mentions Roundup you are more than

Before using, always read and familiarize yourself with the specific Roundup s instructions on the
label. In addition, always wear protective clothing like a long sleeved shirt and goggles to keep
the herbicide off your skin and out of your eyes. Always wash your hands immediately after using
and wash your clothes. Always allow the product to completely dry before permitting children or
pets into the treated area.
For the best results, always apply any Roundup product on a windless and sunny day when
temperatures are above 60 degrees Fahrenheit and no rain is in the forecast. If you accidentally
spray a plant, quickly rinse the herbicide off with water. To keep the environment safe, don t apply
any herbicide close to a body of water, storm drain, and ditch or gutter where runoff occurs.
If using a tank sprayer to apply any Roundup herbicides, make sure to use one made out of
fiberglass, plastic, stainless steel or plastic lined steel, and don t use a sprayer made out of unlined
or galvanized steel. Always follow each herbicide s mixing instructions on amounts and application
instructions so you don t injure desirable plants. In addition, testing the spray pattern on a concrete
driveway before heading into the garden assures you have the correct nozzle adjustment and you
don t end up spraying non targeted plants.

Big Bang Vs Nebular Hypothesis
Space, how was it formed, how old is it, how big is it and what does it contain? Those are a

First, they both started a long time ago and it took a long time to get to where we are today. We

Another similarity is that they both had a lot happening at the beginning, but it calmed down after
a while. We know this because they both had at least a 150 million year gap after sculpting the
Solar System or the Universe.
Even though there are some similarities to The Big Bang Theory and Nebular Hypothesis.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest Speech Act Theory Essay
Ken Kesey forms the intricate relationships among the characters in the novel One Flew Over the
Cuckoo s Nest by the unique use of perspective and speech. Throughout the novel, Kesey depicts
this connection between the public world and the seemingly closed off society inside the mental
institution. This creates two separate spheres separated by a few walls and doors. Kesey goes on
to form a unique perspective in the novel, told by a paranoid schizophrenic, with the narrator s
caricature like description of characters in the novel. This makes the audience ponder if the narrator
is always depicting images as they truly are. This evolves into the Speech Act Theory, which
illustrates reality versus false utterance. Through the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Burke, a critical analyzer of the novel, characterized this by the act of drama . Specifically,
dramatism focuses on how we use language and create both real life and fictional narratives to
present a particular view of a situation, just as a play creates and presents a certain world or
situation inhabited by characters in the play (Rutten, 2012). Through the act of dramatism, the
interactions in the novel are shaped. This act of dramatizing insanity separates the social spheres of
the normal and the insane creating a social distinction between the two parties. They are perceived
differently and immediately receive a warning label when they are viewed as insane . Humans form
this stereotype through our adjusted, fixed attitudes towards people who are disabled . Rutten states
A rhetorical perspective (on the word disabled ) essentially enables an understanding of the
complexity of impairment and disability as a cultural/discursive as well as a social and structural
phenomenon (Rutten, 2012). This shows how society tends to suppress those who have mental
illnesses and ignore them. They are locked away in a mental institution, shielded from the public
eye. The Speech Act Theory comes into play when viewing the certain utterances said by patients in
the mental institution. The theory focuses on the distinction between performative and constative
utterances (Bernaerts, 2010). Performative utterances are

Compare and Contrast Dna and Rna
Compare and contrast DNA and RNA. Discuss why humans did not evolve with one central
repository of DNA, but rather it is replicated throughout the body?
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA): It is helical double stranded nucleic acid made of complementary
purine and pyramidines supported by deoxy ribose sugars and phospodiester structures. (5 Prime to
3 prime). Eukaryotic DNA material.
Ribonucleic acid (RNA): It is a single nucleic acid supported by adenine, guanine, cytosine and

The four bases found in DNA are adenine (abbreviated A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine
(T). A fifth pyrimidine base, called uracil (U), usually takes the place of thymine in RNA and
differs from thymine by lacking a methyl group on its ring.
If we only had one central repository of DNA, it would take a long time for a protein to be made.
We d have to make it far in advance of needing it, so we wouldn t be able to quickly respond to new
situations. Imagine if you were out hunting, and suddenly, a wolf appeared at your side. If you
were slow at making proteins because you had one central repository of DNA, the wolf would
probably get to you before you could respond safely.
Also, regulation of proteins occurs at the level of DNA as well as on other levels. In some cells,
certain sections of DNA are bundled tight in a mass of proteins, in such a way that no RNA (and
thus no protein) can be made from them. This turns off those genes. In other sections, only a few
proteins might be keeping the DNA turned off, so that it could quickly be unravelled and used to
make proteins.
This decreases the chance of harmful mutations killing the entire body, as well. Right now, you
have redundancy many copies of heart cells, each with a full set of DNA. Now imagine that
something goes wrong with one of those cells. It can safely suicide , and the other cells will
replace it.
If we had one central set of DNA, if anything ever went wrong

ultimately swept the rap subculture (George, 133).
The next big wave in the subculture behind rap music itself was DJing. The ability to mix music
on a machine and scratch records was a phenomenon in itself. Rap music in the industry was
nothing without a beat, and in order for the song to be a hit, the beat must carry the lyrics. Many

Persuasive Speech About Drinking Alcohol
Procedure
пѓ Intro (2 minutes) o How many of you have seen an advertisement and felt like you needed
that product because it looked fun or cool? o Has an advertisement ever been so persuasive that
you believed you would appear to be cool or fun if you used that product? o Sometimes, these
expectations influence the decisions that we make in life.
пѓ Beginning (20 minutes) o Students will be told that they will be learning about Alcohol and the
dangers of consumption it has on the body and brain. Alcohol is a substance that is legal for adults
to drink. However, many people have certain beliefs about what it will do for us. o For example,
many people drink alcohol because they believe it will make them feel a certain way or appear a
certain way to others. They may think they will look cool/ mature/ funny to others, if they drink
alcohol. o Does drinking alcohol really make someone cooler/ funnier or more mature? (No) o
Where else do you think people might get thee false expectations from, besides advertisements?
(TV, movies, video games, music videos, etc.) o If teenagers thought alcohol promoted positive
effects, do you think they would be more likely to drink it? (Yes) o If people see alcohol being
used in a positive way in the media or through advertisements, they might ignore the
consequences that it comes with such as making decisions they might regret, getting sick,
getting addicted, etc. o Do you feel as if a person would plan to humiliate themselves at a party?
(No) o Many advertisements for alcohol make people think it is a good idea to consume it, that
is it beneficial for them. The purpose of this is for industries to make money, not necessarily tell
the truth. They connect products with positive desirable images. o The media portrays messages
that are designed to make people think that drinking alcohol is okay/ fun and that everyone else
does it. What they don t tell you, is that alcohol is in fact a drug that has harmful effects on our
body and brain. o Students will now complete four questions independently. o Students will learn
that one 12oz beer has the same amount of alcohol as a 5oz glass of wine. The type of alcoholic
beverage isn t what effects the body, but the amount of alcohol consumed.

St. John s Wort Essay
It s hard for most of us to avoid a certain amount of stress, anxiety, depression, and fatigue these
days. The pace of modern life, and all its excessive stimulation, takes a toll on our bodies and
minds. When we can t escape from it, many of us resort to harmful addictions or medications to
help us through. In the last couple of decades, though, certain natural (plant derived) substances
have begun to garner reputations for helping to give people an overall feeling of well being. St
John s Wort is one notable example of an herb used to treat depression. Another, which is more
commonly associated with combating anxietyand easing stress, is Kava. Kava is a relatively
recent arrival on the shelves of health stores. Requiring a warm and moist climate, the plant had
previously been known only around the South Pacific islands particularly, New Guinea, New
Zealand, and Hawaii. There it was renowned for promoting, in those who imbibed it, feelings of
relaxation and contentment and, in large doses, of intoxication. Many old native practices for the
preparation of Kava involved chewing bits of the root (where its active ingredients, known as
kavalactones, chiefly reside) and spitting them out into a great bowl. Once enough was
accumulated, this pretty unappetizing mead was mixed with water or coconut milk until desired
strength was achieved. Probably few of us would be adventurous enough to sample that original
version of the drink, and chewing the root itself numbs one s

Heidegger s Relationship Between Poetry And Poetry
In the words of Heidegger, the poem is a vortex that snatches us away not gradually, but suddenly,
and thus we are drawn into a conversation. Understanding of poetry is essential to Heidegger s
philosophy. There are two notions, which seem to stand at opposite poles, which are poetry and
technology. They seem to be opposed forms of truth. In modern civilization, we see the world
through our technology, but there was a time when the truth was seen through poetry.
Holderlin (1770 1843) a symbol of the German Romantic Movement had a great impact on

Grant Essay
The Federal Pell Grant program has continued to support college students with financial needs for
over 40 years. Starting in 1972 as the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant, the program was later
renamed after Senator Claiborne Pell, whose goal was to provide economically disadvantaged
students with the opportunity to pursue higher educationbeyond secondary schooling. Even though
the program is more geared toward increasing the number of collegegraduates seeking a bachelor s
degree, being successful at the community college level can greatly benefit post secondary
students. Some of the advantages of an associate s degree include higher pay than a high school
diploma or GED certificate, relatively quick acquisition of higher education... Show more content

Moreover, I will respond to a few anti Pell grant criticisms and elaborate on how changes to the
program may make it more effective.
The Federal Pell Grant Program s Purpose: Addressing the Economic Market Failure The Federal
Pell Grant program s purpose is to provide financially needy students with a foundation of post
secondary educational support. As low income earners continue to lack the skills necessary for
skilled labor careers, and the demand for low skilled labor decreases, the wage gap will increase.
As the wage gap increases, so would the need for effective social welfare funded by the
government via taxpayer dollars. Pell grants are meant to offer students with an opportunity to
break the cycle of being economically disadvantaged, and the program gives them a chance to
improve their economic situation, and thus, society as a whole.
The Federal Pell Grant Program: What it is and How it Works
Pell grants are federal subsidies given to students primarily on a financial need basis to help them
invest in higher education. The money is not meant to be repaid like a loan. In 2015, the program
provided a maximum of $5500 in grant money to undergraduate students. The maximum has risen a
few hundred dollars since then, but the amount covers the costs of community college tuition more
completely than for a 4 year institution. Low attainments rates can be attributed, in part, to low
income families being unaware of the cost of college, thus, not

African Grey Parrot Research Paper
It is one of the most amazing things when you first hear your african grey parrot talking. Not
only because the words are intelligible but also because the bird does a very good job of mimicing
your voice as well. It shouldn t really be all that surprising as the african grey parrot is highly
intelligent and has had a reputation for hundreds of years of being able to repeat words. Some
have been recorded with a vocabluary of almost six hundred words.
There are times when you hear your african grey parrot talking that you would swear blind that
your bird actually understands what he is saying. And not without good reason either. African grey

Both also have the same talking ability including being able to mimic and string words together
logically. These parrots don t only just mimic speech.
They will pick up any sound that takes their fancy. Don t be surprised when your telephone rings
and then stops before you get there. It just might be your African Grey parrot talking. Parrots in
general do not have vocal chords so how do they speak? We, as humans, can produce sound by
blowing across the top of a bottle and when you hear your african grey parrot talking this is more
or less how he parrot talks. By forcing air across the top of his trachea your parrot can produce
sound. He can vary the sound produced by changing the shape of his trachea.
This obviously takes quite a bit of practice on the part of your bird. This is why you will often
hear your bird muttering or babbling away to himself in his cage until he is confident enough of
the sound he his producing to say it out loud. You will generally, however, only hear your african
grey parrot talking when he is about a year old.
It must still be remembered however that no matter how well spoken your bird is or how tame he
appears to be your parrot

Oppressors In America Research Paper
The guilt of nurturing lust for power made Hagar run away from Sara. In this context, I observe,
that the powerless concubine became all powerful she ran away twice from Sara. Her reasons
for doing so might be many, most notable being that Hagar was the biological mother of
Ishmael, and further the tables turned when Sara asked Abraham to send Hagar away there is a
shift in the power roles. Hagar s acts of running away from Sara twice helps me perceive Hagar
taking over the role of an oppressor from her former role of one being oppressed. To explicate
this, as a maid, Hagar was oppressed into forcible sexual relationship with Abram, the same
oppressed concubine can be perceived as the oppressor who torments Sara because she is the
birthing mother of Abraham s son and hence looks down upon Sara.... Show more content on

British rulers and sought freedom to build their own nation have now formed their own groups to

burned crosses and lynched the African Americans, seeking to further build up the agendas of white
Christianity. While reading the article by Dr. Stephen Ray, Jr., the question intrigued me about how
the white Christians, for whom the cross should have been the object of liberation, have gone to the
path of being the oppressors to the black community? As I observe, the unasked question is: When
did, Christianity preach and teach hatred against anyone, calling judgement upon them by enslaving
and burning them? I find the question extremely relevant to the theological

Darfur Issues
Being ransacked, raped, and pillaged, and most of all, murdered and driven out of your homes, all
by your government? These were the horrors about 100 native tribes faced in a region of Sudan
named Darfur in 2003. The government of Sudan took up arms against these villages for a number
of reasons, here including the ongoing fight between the native farmers and nomads, the Sudanese
government being corrupt, and the struggle between the villagers/farmers and their government.
All beginning in the late 1980 s, General Omar Bashir took over Sudan using a military Coup,
therefore allowing the National Islamic Front to worsen the problems. Weapons started to flow into
Darfur because of these conflicts, and little by little the native farmers started

Folk Music Research Paper
Folk Rock music is my favorite genre to listen to, such as the Lumineers, Mumford and Sons,
and Judah and the Lion. Folk Rock music is a blend between folk music that is blended with
rock and pop; it was created in the 1960 s when it started out with two different artists, Bob
Dylan the Band, and the Byrd s. The folk revival of the 1960s is often the starting point of
fascination with the style for many contemporary folk fans. One big effect of the 60s folk revival
was that it marked the beginning of folksingers, on a large scale, writing their own material. Since
in folk rock, most are singer/songwriters, instruments that are typically used are electric guitar,
electric bass and drums. Some bands, such as Judah and the Lion, will also add... Show more

Country music is interesting to me since it is a genre where a bunch of different genres
originated from such as folk rock, the similarity of the style to folk rock and bluegrass, and also
that most country artists write and sing their own pieces. Country music was developed right
here in the USA down in the south in the 1920 s, being that was the first ever recording. It is also
one of the firsts of popular modern American music. In the 1930 s and 1940 s before the
television was invented, it was common that American families would sit around a radio to
listen to entertainment, and one of the most popular programs was a live country show called
the Grand Ole Opry . It was based out of Nashville, which we all know as the home of country
music. Back then people would listen to what was called Western music which would have a
bunch of clicks and clacks and sound like a horse like beat and would have singing cowboys. In
the early 1950 s another kind of country music developed and it was known as bluegrass, and the
later in the 1960 s country rock began to appear since the country genre was being beat out by rock
bands (and this is also when my favorite, Folk Rock, became about.) During this time is also when
other genres began to come about such as Folk Rock and Country Pop. Instruments that are
typically used in the country genre are pretty much all string instruments such as the acoustic guitar,

Athletes Professional Athletes
There are many arguments on pay gaps and wage differences between genders different races.
However, salaries of professional athletes and every day, essential careers, such as teachers,
nurse, and police officers, can become an even bigger controversy because we don t understand
why athletes deserve to be paid that much, or we think us, as everyday workers, deserve to get
paid more for what we do. There are some valid reasons that contribute to professional athlete s
high pay, and our average pay. This has always been an interesting line of inquiry for me because
I never understood why playing a sport could make you so famous and rich, but the salary for
saving lives didn t even compare. I remember multiple occasions where my dad and I were
watching sports, and we landed on the topic of why professional athletes get paid so much. To no
surprise, these conversations always ended in frustration for both of us and each of asking, what
makes professional athletes so much more important that the rest of us? It is no secret professional
athletes have a higher pay than most these days, but how much more? According to Chris Mueller,
a sports columnist, the average Chicago Bear s footballplayer made two million dollars in 2011,
and the highest paid doctor was paid close to $500,000 (Mueller). This can cause much
controversy due to the difference in preparation for the careers. To become a doctor, it takes many

What the heck is a mole? We have Avagadro ( and others) to thank for this........
6.02 x 1023 is the number of things per mole of the substance.
Here is a tutorial for an over view and for a reference as you work through these problems http:/
/www.wiley.com/college/chem/spencer053872/tutorial/gramsmoles/gramsmoles1.html We can use
this to do mathematical conversions to determine mass, volume, and number of atoms or molecules
in a given substance. For example let s check out this video to convert moles methane (CH4) to
grams of methane. http://www.sciencegeek.net/Chemistry/Video/Unit4/GMV2.shtml

Time for some more practice:
1. How many grams of glucose are in 6.63 x 1023 molecules of glucose, C6H12O6? *198.37g
C6H12O6
2. Determine the number of molecules found in a 12.4 g sample of H2SO4. *7.61x1023 atoms
H2SO4
3. 3.14 x 1023 molecules of CO2 are produced in a chemical reaction. How much would the sample

John Stuart Mill Is A Man Essay
John Stuart Mill is a man that has been immortalized by the public as both a genius, and a man
before his own time. He has made countless contributions to philosophy, ethics, economics, and
politics; he was a man not afraid to speak his mind, often to a candour level that become
expected of Mill s works (Browne 274). This frankness became attached to Mill s, as he was
typically swift and cunning in the disablement of opposing views and logical backing of his
own. However, because of this, and his often debated stances, Mill often faced scrutiny over his
beliefs, from authors such as Matthew Browne. His opponents were often quick to say how
much it pains them to argue against Mill s point of view. As Browne said, To any one who
regards the genius and character of Mr. Mill with such serious homage as the writer of these
lines, it is a task of peculiar difficulty, and also a considerable pain, to express, and especially to
express in public, strong though qualified dissent from his opinions upon an important question
(Browne 273). However, before we indulge into both the greatness and questioning of Mill s
work it is important to understand how this man came to be. I remember one day asking my
father why it was that he pushed me so hard and seemed to always expect the best out of me.
Upon saying this I saw a softness enter his eyes, one that I had seen before, but in some way one
that made me feel sadden as I suddenly saw the age enter his face. I knew he was going to say

  • 2. Nuclear Atomic Nuclear Reactor Was Brought Online On December 2nd, 1942, the Chicago Pile 1 nuclear reactor was brought online. It was the world s first, and the beginning of a movement that would come to shape the world s energy resources for decades to come. Since that day, nuclear power has peaked at ten percent of the world s total energy resources in 2011 (International Energy Agency), and has fueled not only power grids across the globe, but a heated debate about the viability, environmental impact, and ethical concerns of using nuclear fission and radioactive chemical reactions as a public energy source. The most widespread arguments against its use all revolve around a trio of disastrous reactor failures spanning the last three decades: the meltdown on Three Mile Island, the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Barely a year later, on March 28, 1979, the second of the station s pair of reactors had been shut down for refueling and routine maintenance, during which an attempt to clear a blockage resulting in a clogged instrument line which would lead to a shutdown of several different water and coolant pumps later in the evening. With the steam generators no longer receiving water, the heat and caused the reactor to perform an emergency shutdown. Within eight seconds, control rods were inserted into the core to halt the nuclear chain reaction. Because steam was no longer being fed into the turbine, however, heat was no longer being removed from the reactor. When the water pumps had stopped, three auxiliary pumps activated automatically. Their valves had been closed for routine maintenance, however, leaving them unable to pump any water. Closing all three valves at once was a violation of Nuclear Regulatory Commission policy, and one of the primary causes of the reactor s partial meltdown (Mahaffey 329). When the auxiliary pumps failed to come online, a relief valve should have opened as a tertiary safety mechanism to release heat and pressure. It was prevented from doing do due to a mechanical fault, but poorly designed instrumentation made this difficult for operators to discover. As a result of improper training and complex instrumentation, it took several hours and a new shift of workers before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Grip Strength Experiment This experiment was conducted to see if icing certain muscles in the arm affects grip strength. An electromyogram and dynamometer was used to test this theory. An electromyogram (EMG) is used to record muscles contraction, and a dynamometer is used to test grip strength. The superficial muscles in the forearm that contract when something is being gripped are flexor carpi radialis, brachioradialis, flexor carpi ulnaris, and flexor digitorum superficialis muscles. When muscles are fatigued, often times after sports practice or a game, ice is usually the go to. Some athletes take ice baths to relax their body so the muscles don t get sore. This experiment will prove if ice relaxes the muscles in the forearm and makes the grip weaker as the muscles are cold. Methods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A baseline test was measured for all of the participants. The ground electrode was placed on the boney part of the anterior side of the wrist. The negative input was set on the flexor carpi radialis muscle, and the positive input was placed on the brachioradialis muscle both on the right arm. The dynamometer was placed in the right hand without any pressure on it and the participant laid his/her arm on the table in a relaxed position. The EMG started the muscle reading while the arm was in a relaxed position, and then the participant quickly squeezed the dynamometer as hard as they could for a second or two. A week later the same participants laid their arm on a frozen ice pack, big enough to cover the whole forearm, for fifteen minutes straight. The electrodes were then placed in the same exact spots, and the test was taken exactly like the baseline tests were. During these tests all of the cords for each electrode was laid on the table so they were not crossing or touching each other while the measurements were being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay about Macroeconomics You may have already studied microeconomics, which looks at supply, demand and prices for individual goods. Macroeconomics looks at the bigger picture and involves the study of the economy as a whole. National income Let us start by looking at a simple example a two sector economy made up of households (consumers) and firms (producers) and use this to develop the idea of national income. To start with we will ignore the impact of government policy and overseas sectors. Households ultimately own the factors of production, e.g., labour, materials and capital, and supply these factors to firms who use them to produce goods and services. In return households earn rewards for supplying the firms with the factors of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This model will use the following definitions: Consumption (C) consumption goods produced and sold to customers i.e., the chairs. Savings (S) income that is not spent on consumption. Investment (I) production of, or expenditure on, non consumption goods (carried out by firms) including expenditure on increasing stocks of consumption goods. Injections expenditure on domestic output not originating from consumers e.g., investment. Leakages income not spent on consumption of domestic output e.g., savings. Consumers will not spend all their income on goods and services. They will also have savings income not spent on consumption. Similarly producers will not just spend on producing goods but will also carry out investment expenditure on non consumption goods. There are therefore injections into (investment) and leakages from (savings) the circular flow. These injections and leakages can now be added to the circular flow model (see Figure 2) Figure 2 Notes to Figure 2 In this model the income earned by households (Y) must be equal to expenditure on purchasing national product (E). Output of consumption goods by firms equals consumption expenditure by household s (C). Note that households do not spend all their income instead they save (S) a leakage. Expenditure on non consumption goods by firms is investment (I) an injection. Income (Y) = Expenditure (E) Income ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Interracial Marriages In The United States Diversity in cultures throughout the world can often create obstacles when developing relationships. However, despite years of desegregation, social and cultural differences still exist. One of the differences that still exist is the institution of marriage. This is especially true when it comes to the topic of interracial marriages. Which has been described as a marriagebetween members of two different races. Even though, it has not been that long ago since interracial marriage has been made legal throughout the entire United States. It continues to be one of the biggest conflicts in society today, considering everyone has their different viewpoints on the topic. Since these types of marriages are considered to be an exception rather than a norm, many couples continue to encounter various issues. Racism has continued to be an ongoing issue in the United States. In the early years of colonization, interracial marriages were made illegal in the United States. The biggest problem America faced with interracial relationships arose during the slavery era. During this time period, it became extremely common for plantation owners to sexually abuse African American women. Many were raped by white males, which has helped lead to the ugly shadow cast on relationships between black women and white men (Smedley). When slavery became institutionalized in the United States, several anti miscegenation laws surfaced which implemented racial segregation on marriages and relationships. ... Essay on Artist Pain Exposed in Kafka s A Hunger Artist Artist Pain Exposed in Kafka s A Hunger Artist In A Hunger Artist , Kafka comments on the life of the modern artist through the life of a hunger artist. Kafka comments that the modern artist is always dissatisfied with his or her art. The modern artist also is trapped in a harsh and capricious world, in which the artist struggles to maintain his or her audience by pushing the extreme, but are cheated because they do not receive his or her recognition. Finally, in A HungerArtist Kafka refers to the modern artist s struggle between the need for fame and the need for isolation. In A Hunger Artist the artist joins the circus and wants to astound the world by setting a fasting record. However, the more the artist fasted the more the crowds ignored him. Critic R.O.C. Winkler suggests that the crowds ignored the artist because of a corruption in the relationships between humans.iii[iii] The corruption is seen when a passer by stopped and looked at the old figure on the sign and spoke of swindling . The comment made by the passer by cheated the hunger artist of his recognition, and showed the world s inborn malice and indifference . The hunger artist s eroded cage, comprised of dirty and illegible placards, the pointless sign tracking the days of the fast and dirty straw, further signified the corruption in the relationship between the hunger artist and the world. During Kafka s lifetime he saw a shift in his audience s attention and felt alienated by modern society.iv As the hunger artist sought the crowd s attention he was also trapped in another struggle between his need for fame and his need for isolation. The struggle is seen when the artist s cage was set up near the animals in the circus. As people walked to the menagerie they saw the artist and some stayed and stared and others rushed off to see the animals. Ironically, the artist disliked the people ... Many endangered species roam the various biomes that call Africa home. Trophy hunting has been a popular activity for many decades; many well known individuals such as the Theodore Roosevelt participated. Trophy hunting is hotly debated within the scientific community; Lucille Palazy, who works for the University of Paris, introduces this, Trophy hunting is one of the most controversial issues in the field of biodiversity conservation... Some researchers such as Nuzzo and Traill, who work at Imperial College London and are published in the African Journal of Ecology, feel as though not enough research has been done on the topic. Nuzzo and Traill studied data from the years of 1960 to 2011. They conclude, ...[we] cannot draw any strong conclusions... this research emphasizes the need for population level monitoring programmes, (Nuzzo, Marcella C, and Lochran W. Traill 253). Conservationists such as Michael Paul Nelson choose to evaluate the issue through an ethical stance. Nelson introduces an important idea within conservation, consequentialism. Nelson states, consequentialism is... the end justifies the means... Consequentialist thinking is common in conservation, (Nelson, Michael Paul, et al. 303). This idea must be taken into consideration when trying to solve the issue. Other conservationists are strongly against trophy hunting, such as Peter Lindsey. Lindsey works at the University of Pretoria and Panthera, a conservation association dedicated to lions. In one of his studies, Trophy Hunting of African Lions... , Lindsey et al. studies data from the government of South Africa and data on lion hunting quotas and legal hunting areas. Lindsey et al. produce a firm opinion; ...there remain several problems associated with the negative management of lion hunting which may perpetuate negative impacts, (Lindsey, Peter Andrew, et al. 9). In another of Lindsey s articles, he discusses the differences between wild trophy hunting as opposed to captive bred lions being trophy hunting. Considering the nature of bioweapons, it requires a different strategy of preparations that will prepare and comfort individuals in the location (Jaton Greub, 2014). Meaning full progress regarding the threat will range from understanding the disease context to adhering to community beliefs that guide their faith in case of any life threatening circumstances. This paper discusses the relevant actions that will respond to the attacks in regard to faith of the Jewish community and the regulation that prevail in the heath domain. Jews believe that God assists those who assist themselves, and so should look for alternative measures to curb potential threats (The Hallowed Path, 2011). In this case, the Jews will strive hard to acquire a cell free anthrax vaccine. There are no doubts that Anthrax vaccine exists in small quantity and are only available for military individuals. The healthcare personnel will, therefore, collaborate with state and local health departments to avail the immunization or opt for oral preventive measures that are readily available such as ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, or levofloxacin (Bower et al., 2015). Since the nation s existence, Israel has had a noticeable drought of embassies in its capital city of Jerusalem, including its strongest and most important ally in the United States. This is because both the Israelis and Palestinians claim this land as their own, and has led to conflict for decades. Countries choose not to put an embassy in Jerusalem because they do not wish to take a side in the matter. • 10. The Greed Cycle Essay Article Review: The Greed Cycle, by John Cassidy The article by Thomas Cassidy, points out the instrumental role that greed plays in the modern corporation. Modern Economists have always seen greed as not only a necessary element in the corporate environment, but as also a vital part of the successful evolution of a public company. As the article points out, Economists from Adam Smith to Milton Friedman have seen greed as an inevitable and, in some ways, desirable feature of capitalism. In a well regulated and well balanced economy, greed helps to keep the system expanding . This lead to a re evaluation of the goal of corporations, from merely maximizing revenues, to maximize the value of the firm, as it was determined in the stock market. It was suggested that pigeons are able to detect the earth s magnetic field, and therefore navigate with this aid. An experiment carried out to explore this possibility. Small magnets were attached to the heads of pigeons which were then released in unfamiliar surroundings. The magnets were designed to disrupt any detection of the earth s magnetic field. It was also found that the butterflies did not respond to changes in magnetic fields suggesting that their primary compass system is based on the sun. b) Assess what these studies can tell us about homing and/or migration. Both studies suggest that animals do not necessarily use just one method to navigate. Keeton s studies shows pigeon s to use both magnetic field and the sun depending on the weather condition. This demonstrates that animals are able to adapt their navigational strategy accordingly as it is essential for survival. However, in Mouritsen and Frost s experiment, it was suggested that butterflies only utilise one strategy of navigation; the sun. Even in cloudy conditions butterflies are said to use patterns of polarised light visible through the clouds. In this case, the idea that animals adapt to different weather conditions cannot be put forward. The butterflies were able to navigate their direction even when the sun was not actually present. While this offers a succinct introduction to the notion of patriotism, a comprehensive account of the subject extends well beyond the scope of any singular definition. In his defense of Modern Patriotism, Stephen Nathanson addresses the hesitation that people face when forced to adopt or reject the patriot label. • 18. An Analysis Of Astrophil And Stella By Sir Philip Sidney How can we record a love so deep it lasts a life time? In Astrophil and Stella, Sir Philip Sidney does just this, creating a chronological sequence of 108 sonnets, depicting the longing and futile adoration of the speaker Astrophil towards his love interest Stella. It has been widely noted that the sonnets may be a reflection of Sidney s own life, after his infamous love of Penelope Devereux following their meeting in 1575, which is said to have lasted through her marriage to another man, and up until his untimely death in 1583. Sonnet31, the sonnet I will be mainly discussing in this essay, is undeniably the most famous of Sidney s sonnets. This sonnet utilises Sidney s favourite Italian rhyme scheme ABBA CDCD EE, paired with his preferred Italian sonnet style, including an octave, followed by a sestet, and a turn in line 8. This writing style not native to the English Language displays Sidney s mastery in conveying his emotional anguish a skill which elevates him as a loved and dearly missed poet of the Elizabethan era. The poem employs iambic pentameter, showing Sidney s marriage of typically English meter with a continental writing style, which creates a beautifully complex narrative of a pining love. The strict meter creates a steady and somewhat lyrical rhyme scheme, which adds a romantic essence of sound to the sonnet, almost as if Astrophil is attempting to serenade Stella throughout the collection of poetry, unfortunately, to no avail.Sonnet 31 ... We d have to make it far in advance of needing it, so we wouldn t be able to quickly respond to new situations. Imagine if you were out hunting, and suddenly, a wolf appeared at your side. If you were slow at making proteins because you had one central repository of DNA, the wolf would probably get to you before you could respond safely. Also, regulation of proteins occurs at the level of DNA as well as on other levels. In some cells, certain sections of DNA are bundled tight in a mass of proteins, in such a way that no RNA (and thus no protein) can be made from them. This turns off those genes. In other sections, only a few proteins might be keeping the DNA turned off, so that it could quickly be unravelled and used to make proteins. This decreases the chance of harmful mutations killing the entire body, as well. Right now, you have redundancy many copies of heart cells, each with a full set of DNA. Now imagine that something goes wrong with one of those cells. It can safely suicide , and the other cells will replace it. If we had one central set of DNA, if anything ever went wrong ... The dances received national exposure on the hit show Soul Train, and ultimately swept the rap subculture (George, 133). The next big wave in the subculture behind rap music itself was DJing. The ability to mix music on a machine and scratch records was a phenomenon in itself. Rap music in the industry was nothing without a beat, and in order for the song to be a hit, the beat must carry the lyrics. Many of the beats at the time were fast pounding bah bum bah rhythms. DJing led to another culture in rap, which was beat boxing. Beat boxing was when a person made their voice sound like the beat in the song. The pace of modern life, and all its excessive stimulation, takes a toll on our bodies and minds. When we can t escape from it, many of us resort to harmful addictions or medications to help us through. In the last couple of decades, though, certain natural (plant derived) substances have begun to garner reputations for helping to give people an overall feeling of well being. St John s Wort is one notable example of an herb used to treat depression. Another, which is more commonly associated with combating anxietyand easing stress, is Kava. Kava is a relatively recent arrival on the shelves of health stores. Requiring a warm and moist climate, the plant had previously been known only around the South Pacific islands particularly, New Guinea, New Zealand, and Hawaii. There it was renowned for promoting, in those who imbibed it, feelings of relaxation and contentment and, in large doses, of intoxication. Many old native practices for the preparation of Kava involved chewing bits of the root (where its active ingredients, known as kavalactones, chiefly reside) and spitting them out into a great bowl. Once enough was accumulated, this pretty unappetizing mead was mixed with water or coconut milk until desired strength was achieved. Probably few of us would be adventurous enough to sample that original version of the drink, and chewing the root itself numbs one s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In modern civilization, we see the world through our technology, but there was a time when the truth was seen through poetry. The Federal Pell Grant Program s Purpose: Addressing the Economic Market Failure The Federal Pell Grant program s purpose is to provide financially needy students with a foundation of post secondary educational support. As low income earners continue to lack the skills necessary for skilled labor careers, and the demand for low skilled labor decreases, the wage gap will increase. As the wage gap increases, so would the need for effective social welfare funded by the government via taxpayer dollars. Pell grants are meant to offer students with an opportunity to break the cycle of being economically disadvantaged, and the program gives them a chance to improve their economic situation, and thus, society as a whole. The Federal Pell Grant Program: What it is and How it Works Pell grants are federal subsidies given to students primarily on a financial need basis to help them invest in higher education. The folk revival of the 1960s is often the starting point of fascination with the style for many contemporary folk fans. One big effect of the 60s folk revival was that it marked the beginning of folksingers, on a large scale, writing their own material. Since in folk rock, most are singer/songwriters, instruments that are typically used are electric guitar, electric bass and drums. Some bands, such as Judah and the Lion, will also add... Country music is interesting to me since it is a genre where a bunch of different genres originated from such as folk rock, the similarity of the style to folk rock and bluegrass, and also that most country artists write and sing their own pieces. Country music was developed right here in the USA down in the south in the 1920 s, being that was the first ever recording. It is also one of the firsts of popular modern American music. In the 1930 s and 1940 s before the television was invented, it was common that American families would sit around a radio to listen to entertainment, and one of the most popular programs was a live country show called the Grand Ole Opry . It was based out of Nashville, which we all know as the home of country music. Back then people would listen to what was called Western music which would have a bunch of clicks and clacks and sound like a horse like beat and would have singing cowboys. In the early 1950 s another kind of country music developed and it was known as bluegrass, and the later in the 1960 s country rock began to appear since the country genre was being beat out by rock bands (and this is also when my favorite, Folk Rock, became about.) During this time is also when other genres began to come about such as Folk Rock and Country Pop. Instruments that are typically used in the country genre are pretty much all string instruments such as the acoustic guitar, the banjo, the mandolin, and even the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Paraphilic Disorder Research Paper Although the disorder is categorized into many different types of specific paraphilia, the characteristics of the illness are often very similar. At first, the disorder may seem like a regular fetish or a sexual fantasy of an individual. However, if an individual is going through guilt, distress, depression, or any sense of immorality from his/her particular interest, the signs of the Paraphilic disorder becomes more explicit. As the individual relieves himself/herself from engaging in paraphilic behaviors, he/she becomes addicted to the cycle. Thus, being diagnosed with Paraphilic disorder. Sometimes, paraphilic subjects may deny that they have paraphilic symptoms or behaviors. But such motivation to deny engaging in paraphilic behavior is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Athletes Professional Athletes There are many arguments on pay gaps and wage differences between genders different races. However, salaries of professional athletes and every day, essential careers, such as teachers, nurse, and police officers, can become an even bigger controversy because we don t understand why athletes deserve to be paid that much, or we think us, as everyday workers, deserve to get paid more for what we do. There are some valid reasons that contribute to professional athlete s high pay, and our average pay. This has always been an interesting line of inquiry for me because I never understood why playing a sport could make you so famous and rich, but the salary for saving lives didn t even compare. I remember multiple occasions where my dad and I were watching sports, and we landed on the topic of why professional athletes get paid so much. To no surprise, these conversations always ended in frustration for both of us and each of asking, what makes professional athletes so much more important that the rest of us? It is no secret professional athletes have a higher pay than most these days, but how much more? According to Chris Mueller, a sports columnist, the average Chicago Bear s footballplayer made two million dollars in 2011, and the highest paid doctor was paid close to $500,000 (Mueller). This can cause much controversy due to the difference in preparation for the careers. To become a doctor, it takes many more years of education and much more debt. The average medical ... • 51. Molar Conversions Mole Conversion Web Quest EO 103 What the heck is a mole? We have Avagadro ( and others) to thank for this........ 6.02 x 1023 is the number of things per mole of the substance. Here is a tutorial for an over view and for a reference as you work through these problems http:/ /www.wiley.com/college/chem/spencer053872/tutorial/gramsmoles/gramsmoles1.html We can use this to do mathematical conversions to determine mass, volume, and number of atoms or molecules in a given substance. For example let s check out this video to convert moles methane (CH4) to grams of methane. http://www.sciencegeek.net/Chemistry/Video/Unit4/GMV2.shtml Once you have finished the video let s practice by completing these problems (be sure to include units!): ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... http://www.sciencegeek.net/Chemistry/Video/Unit4/GMV7.shtml Time for some more practice: 1. How many grams of glucose are in 6.63 x 1023 molecules of glucose, C6H12O6? *198.37g C6H12O6 2. Determine the number of molecules found in a 12.4 g sample of H2SO4. *7.61x1023 atoms H2SO4 3. 3.14 x 1023 molecules of CO2 are produced in a chemical reaction. How much would the sample weigh in grams? *2.29g CO2 4. How many atoms are in a 39.8 g sample of Fe? *3.68x1023 atoms Fe Can I apply this somehow to volume? Well at standard temperature and pressure (STP) a mole of a gas will occupy 22.4 liters. So If we keep our units straight we should be able calculate a given volume of gas from moles. Check it out...... http://www.sciencegeek.net/Chemistry/Video/Unit4 /GMV4.shtml 1. Convert 427 Liters of CO2 to moles. 2. 37 liters of O2 to moles. 3. How about 3.4 moles of CO to liters? 4. 122 moles of Methane to liters? What about converting a given volume of gas to mass or a given mass to volume? Once again you have to get to that common ground first, which is the mole. http://www.sciencegeek.net/Chemistry /Video/Unit4/GMV8.shtml 1. How many molecules are in 22.4 liters of methane? 2. 3.58 x 1023 molecules of propane C8H8 would occupy how much space at STP?

  • 53. John Stuart Mill Is A Man Essay John Stuart Mill is a man that has been immortalized by the public as both a genius, and a man before his own time. He has made countless contributions to philosophy, ethics, economics, and politics; he was a man not afraid to speak his mind, often to a candour level that become expected of Mill s works (Browne 274). This frankness became attached to Mill s, as he was typically swift and cunning in the disablement of opposing views and logical backing of his own. However, because of this, and his often debated stances, Mill often faced scrutiny over his beliefs, from authors such as Matthew Browne. His opponents were often quick to say how much it pains them to argue against Mill s point of view. As Browne said, To any one who regards the genius and character of Mr. Mill with such serious homage as the writer of these lines, it is a task of peculiar difficulty, and also a considerable pain, to express, and especially to express in public, strong though qualified dissent from his opinions upon an important question (Browne 273). However, before we indulge into both the greatness and questioning of Mill s work it is important to understand how this man came to be. I remember one day asking my father why it was that he pushed me so hard and seemed to always expect the best out of me. Upon saying this I saw a softness enter his eyes, one that I had seen before, but in some way one that made me feel sadden as I suddenly saw the age enter his face. I knew he was going to say ...
