The course I am currentlystudyingthisyearisthe HNDAnimal Care course at Dundee andAngus
College inArbroath.Itisthe college’shighestformof educationlevel andaspart of its curriculum
alongwiththe final grade,it’sthe GradedUnit 2 unit.
As part of the Graded unitI am to write upa reportbasedona case studyscenario, the case study
beinga proposal tocreate an equine facilityforthe college thatthe collegemayuse fortheir
studentstakingthe animal care courses, fromthe introductionlevel tothe highernationaldiploma
level.Alongwiththisitmayalsobe usedby leisure classes forequine.
Bearinginmind,thisfacilitywillonlycovereducationof basicequine husbandryandmaintenance of
theirenvironment,notanyformof agilityorridingeducation.
The report isbroke downintothree parts:
1. PlanningStage
2. DevelopmentStage
3. EvaluationStage
Alongwiththese reports,there isalsoatimelineworkingalongside it,showingpersonal deadlines
and dayswhere Iwishto workon parts of thisunitbutalsoany forms of barriers(family, college
work,ETC)
Planning Stage
As saidinthe introduction, thisunithasgivenacase studywhere youare to create an equine Facility
withinthe college’sGlebe.Inthispart,I will stage the differentideasandproposalsIwill needin
orderto kick-startmydevelopmentstage.Thiscanbe brokendowninto:
 Animal Care andWelfare Issues
 Facilityandbusinessmanagement
 Resources(human/in-human)
 Barriers(personal/workrelated)
Animal Care and Welfare Issues
As thisisa proposal to create an educational facility withhorses, obviouslythe basicsmustbe
lookedoverinregardsto the horses.Iwill have toresearchand lookoverthe following:
 Where AmI able to purchase/adoptedhorses?
 How manyI may require?
 The breedof horse suitable foreducational purposes?
 Theirbasicwelfare suchasthe five freedoms
 Codesof practice for horses
 Anyform of licencingIrequire
 Theirbasicnutritionrequirements
 Anyequipmentrequiredtoworkwiththem(bearinginmind,the college’sfarmcontains
some equipmentforthe animals)
 Theirsuitable livingquarters,if theywouldbe suitable tolive indoorsoroutdoors
 Theirbasichusbandry,alongwiththeirdayto daycare from humans.
 Weighingupprosand consof buyingthe horsesoutrightorcollectingthemfromashelter.
 If collectedfroma shelter,if there isanyissueswiththeneithermentallyorphysically.
 If purchasedfroma certifiedbreeder, how muchwill the horsesalone cost.
 Vetbills
 Farrierbills
 Dentistbills
 The benefitsof havinganequine facilityandalsowhyitisgoodto have a reasonable
understandingof horses.
Facility and Business Management
Alongwiththe animal side of things, itisalsoimportanttothinkand understandthatpeople;both
college students, andpossiblyleisure course studentswill be workingwiththe animals.Justasitis
importantforthe animal to be safe and healthy, itisequallyimportantforthe studentstobe safe
workingwithsucha large animal.Iwill have togo overand researchthe following, inorderfor
peace of mind,alongwiththe student’ssafety:
 Human HealthandSafety
 Workerswithineducationalrightstoworkwiththe college
 Anyform of PPE whenworkingwiththe animals
 Anylicensingforthe studentstobe under
 Formsof fundingfromthe students
 Anychance of Zoonoticdiseasesbetweenanimal andhorse
 Anydiseasesdue tothe environment
 Researchpeople’sopinionsonhavinganequine facilitybywritingupacustomersurvey
Resources
In orderto be able to take thisoff the groundand beingthe developmentstage,it’salwaysgoodto
figure outwhatyou will needinordertoexecute thisbusinessproposal. There isdifferentcategories
of resources:
Human Resources – People withknowledgeon theanimal
In-human Resources
Human Resources
Essentiallythisformof resourceswouldbe acollectionof people withinthe businessof workingwith
horses, fromlecturersatthe college whohave avast knowledge ontheirwellbeing, topeople who
workwithnothingbuthorses.
But thiscan alsogo for hiringpeople aswell. Alongwiththe horse care andthe time itwill take to
lookafterthenafterhours,whenmakingthe shelteritisalsoimportanttofindthe righthelpin
orderto buildthe facility.Butaswe are on a budget, itmay alsobe worth it to see if the college’s
joinercoursesmaybe able to helpinbuildingthe facilityandalsotrytoput it withinanothercourses
curriculumandtherefore give more backtothe college asa whole, plusitwouldcostanybuilding
feesif the horsesrequire astable. Atthe same time,Iwould alsoneedtoresearchwhowouldbe
able to fix the drainage andthe floodingissuesthe gleebsuffersfrom.
Inhuman Resources
Thisform of resourcesismore inanimate based.Whenitcomestoresearching, utilisingthe internet,
bookson horse healthcare,andalso booksandinternetpageswithinformationonthe humanside
of the table;Healthandsafety,anylegislationorlicensingforhumans,equipmentetc.Butalsothe
actual toolsanditemsI will needinorder toactuallybuildthe facilityplusdeal withthe issue of the
gleebsdrainage systemasitis notoriousforconstantfloodingandlackof a substantial drainage
system.
Barriers
As we know,noteverythingrunssmoothlyinlife.Noplanisaccomplished withoutdifferentfactors
turningtheirheadsandholdingbackyourinitial plans.That’slife,tounderstandthese issuesIneed
to lookat differentfactorswithinmylife atthe momentandtreatthemas a possible barrierthat
may cause my proposal and my developmenttonotbe accomplishedasexpectedorif there isa
complicationthatholdsbackprogress.Inmy life,thiswouldinclude:
 College workoutwithgradedunit
 Familylife;particularlywithmymother
 Socialisingwithfriendsoutof college
 Movingaway fromhome.
 Volunteering
 Drivinglessonswithinthe nextmonth.
 Issueswiththe internetorothercommunications
 Caringfor my ownanimals:Cleaning, caring,feeding,groomingetc.
 If any days I am off sickor ill
 Holidays
 Movingpreparations
These are all formsof barriersthat maycause the developmentof myequine facilitytogo
underdone orwithlittle progress.Anythingthatmaycome up,will be writtenwithinatimelinealong
withanycommentsand issueswiththe project,alongwithhow the barrierwasdealtwithonthat
day.
Solutionsare these aren’tsimple.Inmycase, due tomy mothersufferingfromagoraphobia and
othermental issues, muchof my time, particularlywhenIamoff isdedicatedtoalsostayinghome if
I am requiredtogo outshoppingforthe house,alongwithanydoctor’s appointments/meeting.
Thoughmy time isdedicatedtohelpingthe household,Ihave afew solutionswhendealingwiththe
above barriers:
 Planningdayswhere Iwouldresearchandworkonmy developmentstage aroundany
appointmentsormeetingswithdoctors.
 Settinga single daypertotallydedicatedtomymum;shopping,supportetc.
 Try to use writtenresourceswhenathome forresearchon the animal side of the plan if
there isan issue withinternetconnectionduringanyformof researchwiththe project.
 Setaside a fewhoursa day for tendingtothe animals,alongwithevery2daysfor daily
cleaningandtheirownhusbandry.
 Usingthe timeline foranyothercollege workrequiredalongsidethisplan.Thiswould
include anyassessmentrevision,reportwritingoranyassessmentresists/remediation.
GenerallyReportswouldtake afull daytowrite up,so I wouldbe able co-workthese with
any phone callsIwouldhave to make formy research, butit forthe animalsorfor peoples
safety.
 For movingpreparations,thoughtIwouldn’tbe movingtillafterIhave finishedmycourse, I
wouldneedtouse mytimeline toallocate time foranyphone calls, viewingsandmeetings
withthe landlord, asthistakesa longtime.5 days to a weekwouldbe required.
 Holidays;Withinthe Easterholidays,whenitcomesnearthe endof the plan,I will have
more free time.Thiscan getfilledwithhelpingmum, volunteeringwithvets&guide dogsor
familyfunctions.Againtime will be allocatedondayswhere Iam free formyself viamy
timeline.
As statedabove, all solutionswithanybarriersstatedwillbe placedinanote withhow I was able to
overcome the barrier.
