2. Me
• Mikalah Maryann Brown (17 years old)
• I have four people in my family, my mom Angie,
my dad Stacy, my brother Blake, and myself. Up
until I was 12 years old, my family and I lived in
the town of Gibbon, Nebraska. The summer after
my 5th grade year, we then moved out to the
country north of Gibbon where I am currently
living.
• I am a Senior in High School at Gibbon Public
Schools (Graduating class of 2013). I am
currently taking several challenging classes in
order to prepare myself for the road ahead.
3. Future Education
• Planning on attending UNK to major in Biology
with an emphasis in wildlife.
• I am planning on being either a Wildlife Biologist
or a Middle School Science teacher. I might
double major and become both. In the past, I
have wanted to become a Veterinarian and start
my own office, but over the years I have changed
my interests. This PowerPoint is going to be as if I
was still planning on starting that business.
5. “Our Mission is to care for any animal companion
as if it was our own, large or small, scaly or
furry.”
6. The Companion Animal Clinic
Location: Kearney, Nebraska
This animal clinic will be located on highway 30 near
Cabelas.
Who: Mikalah Brown and potential partner
What is it?
This is a veterinary clinic that will care for animals that
are not usually recognized in the veterinary field. This list would
include: Lizards, Sugar Gliders, Spiders, Fish, and other exotics.
It will be my duty to learn as much as possible about these
animals so that they can get the medical attention they need.
7. Goals and Objectives
• 5 year goals
– Year 1: get everything organized and get the business running.
– Year 2: focus on increasing numbers of customers and getting the
―word out‖
– Years 3 and 4: add more employees and increase sales
– Year 5: keep bringin’ in the customers!!
• How will I achieve this?
– Make sure to stay up to date on competitors and market sales
– revenue/profitability.
8. Market Summary
• The past, present, and future of my business
– Opportunities
• Gain experience with exotic animals
• Since this will be the only clinic that accepts exotic
animals, we can gain a lot of profit.
– Why is this market right for the company?
• Because this is an animal clinic and the market has to
do with animal health and wellness.
– Attractions
• Gardens outside, unique building, catchy name, lots of
advertising, the fact that exotic animals are accepted.
9. Opportunities
• Problems and Opportunities
– Problems
• Problems would be along the lines of: competition with
more experienced clinics, trouble employing people,
getting the correct licenses, etc.
– Opportunities
• Opportunities would be a location in Kearney or Grand
Island because there are a lot of people around here
with pets. Another would be if another clinic closed, it
would eliminate competition.
10. Competition
• Competition in Kearney would be West Villa Animal Hospital
and Cottonwood Animal Clinic.
• My companies advantage would be accepting the exotic
animals because the two clinics listed above do not allow
certain animals because of their lack of experience on those
certain animals. My clinic (me being the veterinarian) would
go the extra mile to learn about these animals since
Americans spend hundreds of dollars on animals such as fish
and reptiles every year.
11. Resource Requirements
• Requirements:
– Personnel—Must love animals, be fun but serious and be an
honest person
– Technology—use up-to-date technology to ensure the best
quality for our patients
– Finances—finances must be sustainable and not get out of hand
– Products—best service available and best products must be
available.
– Services—employees are expected to be hardworking but animal-
friendly.
12. Risks and Rewards
• Risks could range anywhere from an animal dying in surgery and
losing a customer, to losing a dog while boarding. There must be
responsible, attentive employees so that risks will be avoided.
• Rewards would be along the lines of getting donations, increased
number of customers, or money to improve our facilities.
13. Financial Plan
• Outline a high-level financial plan that defines the financial model
and pricing assumptions.
– This plan should include expected annual sales and profits for
the next three years which I am not sure about yet.
– I have to consider advertising costs while creating this plan.
14. Marketing Goals
• Advertising is going to be important for my business. In order to get
my name out, I may have to consider flyers or possibly billboards.
• I have to be careful with pricing because advertising can get
expensive.
