Close Reading: Analyze Effects
of First Person Point of View
GRADE 4, UNIT 4, WEEK 3, MINI-LESSON 8 (15-20 minutes)
Close Reading: Analyze Effects of First
Person Point of View
I will be able to:
Read to identify and annotate examples of first person point of
view.
Access information that can be presented from first person point of
view.
Participate in discussions with classmates by being prepared.
Write a well-organized response to a close reading question.
Engage Thinking
Remember, “My Breaking In” has a first person narrator,
Black Beauty, so it’s written with a first person point of
view. Today, we will use our understanding of first
person point of view to analyze its effects.
Reread to Find Text Evidence
Close Reading Prompt: Reread paragraph 5 and 6 of
“My Breaking In.” The author wanted people to
reconsider how they treated animals. How does telling
the story from Black Beauty’s point of view help her
communicate this idea?
Annotate! Highlight in yellow (or underline) any
sentences that serve the author’s purpose.
Collaborative Conversation: Model
TEXT EVIDENCE (yellow highlighter or underline using
ELMO so students can follow along)
The bit is “cold hard steel” that is “to be pushed into
one’s mouth, between one’s teeth, and over one’s
tongue, with the ends coming out at the corner of your
mouth.”
Collaborative Conversation: Model
TEXT EVIDENCE (yellow highlighter or underline using
ELMO so that students may follow along)
The bit “is held fast by straps over your head, under
your throat, round your nose, and under your chin so
that no way in the world can you get rid of the nasty
hard thing.”
Collaborative Conversation: Model
EFFECT (write in margins; students copy)
By explaining how the horse feels when various
equipment is being put on him, the reader understands
how uncomfortable it is for the horse and feels
sympathetic.
Collaborative Conversation: Partner
Now, work with a partner to find and highlight the
actions of Black Beauty’s master. Remember, the author
wanted people to reconsider how they treated animals.
How does telling the story from Black Beauty’s point of
view help her communicate this idea? Think about how
the master treats Black Beauty.
Share
Who would like to share their answers to the close
reading prompt?
Write to Apply Understanding
Please write a paragraph in your writing journal
explaining what effect the first person point of view has
on your understanding of paragraphs 5 and 6.
Paragraph starter: After reading paragraphs 5 and 6 of
“My Breaking In,” I was able to better understand how
Black Beauty felt about the process of breaking in. For
example,

  • 1. Close Reading: Analyze Effects of First Person Point of View GRADE 4, UNIT 4, WEEK 3, MINI-LESSON 8 (15-20 minutes)
  • 2. Close Reading: Analyze Effects of First Person Point of View I will be able to: Read to identify and annotate examples of first person point of view. Access information that can be presented from first person point of view. Participate in discussions with classmates by being prepared. Write a well-organized response to a close reading question.
  • 3. Engage Thinking Remember, “My Breaking In” has a first person narrator, Black Beauty, so it’s written with a first person point of view. Today, we will use our understanding of first person point of view to analyze its effects.
  • 4. Reread to Find Text Evidence Close Reading Prompt: Reread paragraph 5 and 6 of “My Breaking In.” The author wanted people to reconsider how they treated animals. How does telling the story from Black Beauty’s point of view help her communicate this idea? Annotate! Highlight in yellow (or underline) any sentences that serve the author’s purpose.
  • 5. Collaborative Conversation: Model TEXT EVIDENCE (yellow highlighter or underline using ELMO so students can follow along) The bit is “cold hard steel” that is “to be pushed into one’s mouth, between one’s teeth, and over one’s tongue, with the ends coming out at the corner of your mouth.”
  • 6. Collaborative Conversation: Model TEXT EVIDENCE (yellow highlighter or underline using ELMO so that students may follow along) The bit “is held fast by straps over your head, under your throat, round your nose, and under your chin so that no way in the world can you get rid of the nasty hard thing.”
  • 7. Collaborative Conversation: Model EFFECT (write in margins; students copy) By explaining how the horse feels when various equipment is being put on him, the reader understands how uncomfortable it is for the horse and feels sympathetic.
  • 8. Collaborative Conversation: Partner Now, work with a partner to find and highlight the actions of Black Beauty’s master. Remember, the author wanted people to reconsider how they treated animals. How does telling the story from Black Beauty’s point of view help her communicate this idea? Think about how the master treats Black Beauty.
  • 9. Share Who would like to share their answers to the close reading prompt?
  • 10. Write to Apply Understanding Please write a paragraph in your writing journal explaining what effect the first person point of view has on your understanding of paragraphs 5 and 6. Paragraph starter: After reading paragraphs 5 and 6 of “My Breaking In,” I was able to better understand how Black Beauty felt about the process of breaking in. For example,
