This document provides instructions for a lesson on analyzing the effects of first person point of view. Students will reread passages from "My Breaking In" told from the perspective of Black Beauty the horse. They will analyze how this point of view helps communicate the author's idea that people should reconsider how they treat animals by highlighting descriptions of actions from Black Beauty's perspective and their effects. Students will then discuss their findings with partners and share responses to a close reading prompt before writing a paragraph explaining the effect of the first person perspective.
