INITIATIVES IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING
OF MATHEMATICS
Teaching and learning mathematics in varied
direction:-
Curriculum development
In service teacher training
Mathematics popularization activities and nature

Institutional and state level initiatives
FIELD MEDAL
 The Fields Medal is a prize awarded to two, three,
or four mathematicians under 40 years of age at
the International Congress of the International
Mathematical Union (IMU), a meeting that takes
place every four years.
 The Fields Medal is regarded as one of the highest
honors a mathematician can receive.
 The medal was first awarded in 1936 to Finnish
mathematician Lars Ahlfors and American
mathematician Jesse Douglas.
MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD
 The Mathematics Olympiad activity was undertaken by
NBHM from 1986 onwards and is currently run in
collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science
Education, Mumbai
 One main purpose of this activity is to support
mathematical talent among high school students in the
country.
 For the purpose of administering Mathematics Olympiad
contests, the country has been divided in 16 regions.
 Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)RMO is held in each
region normally between September and the first Sunday of
December each year.
 All high school students up to class XII are eligible to appear
for RMO. RMO is a 3-hour written test containing about 6 to 7
problems. Each regional coordinator has the freedom to
prepare his/her own question paper or to obtain the question
paper from NBHM.
 Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO)INMO is held
on the first Sunday of February each year at various Centres
in different regions. Only students selected on the basis of
RMO from different regions are eligible to appear for INMO.
 International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp
(IMOTC)The INMO certificate awardees are invited to a
month long training camp (junior batch) conducted in
May-June, each year
 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)The team
selected at the end of the camp, a "leader" and a
"deputy leader," represent India at the IMO that is
normally held in July in a different member country of
IMO each year
NUMATS- NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY'S

 It is a research-validated program that utilizes above-
grade-level assessment to help parents and educators
better understand their students’ academic strengths and
educational needs.
 NUMATS is a program that offers advanced children
above-grade-level testing to accurately measure their
academic strengths
 NUMATS identifies academic ability, measures growth and
connects gifted students to educational resources and
opportunities for enrichment and acceleration.
NTSE –NATIONAL TALENT SEARCH
EXAMINATION
 The National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is
a National Level scholarship program in India to
identify and nurture talented students.
 It honours and helps talented students by providing
financial assistance in the form of a monthly
scholarship for the entire Academic Career.
 Students studying in Class X are eligible to appear
for the selection process
MTSE-MATHEMATICS TALENT SERACH
EXAMINATION
 Maths Talent Search Examination (MTSE) is a
competitive examination conducted at various
levels by the Indian Institute for Studies in
Mathematics (IISMA).
 Maths Talent Search Examination, or MTSE is a
mathematics skill and mental ability based
competitive exam for the students of Class III to IX.
 The focus of this exam is on mathematical
reasoning, mental ability, novel approach, concepts,
accuracy and speedfor student studying in Class III,
IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX under any educational board.
 MTSE is an open exam. Any student studying in
Class I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI & XII under
any educational board is eligible to appear for
MTSE
 A student can appear only for the class in which
he/she is studying during the academic year.
