OECD publication identifies measures to minimise economic and social damage and help economies recover rapidly after a disaster. It proposes a fundamental shift in risk governance, whereby risk management actors are encouraged, through appropriate incentives, to help boost resilience, rather than rely on government for post-disaster assistance. Is There Hope for Mining After the Aquino Administration?Fernando Penarroyo
Modest economic growth for the Philippines will continue in 2015 with low oil prices supported by increased government and election spending. Capital outflows in mining indicate the presence of a poor investment environment in the Philippine mining sector relative to the other ASEAN countries. Given the current volatility in metal prices and the onset of a new government following the presidential elections in 2016, it is difficult to predict if the worst is over for the industry. While the long-term fundamentals for metals remain strong, the industry is still in a limbo as it waits for the outcome of the 2016 elections. No amount of company restructuring or cautious optimism can reverse the tide of the industry’s demise if an anti-mining or a status quo president is elected.

- IDDRR 2023 key message
Poverty, inequality and discrimination are causes and consequences of growing disaster risk.
Inequality creates the conditions that render people exposed and vulnerable to disasters. Disasters also disproportionately impact the poorest and most at risk people, thus worsening inequality. Reducing vulnerability to disasters requires addressing these dimensions
By 2030, with current climate projections, the world will face some 560 disasters per year. An additional estimated 37.6 million people will be living in conditions of extreme poverty due to the impacts of climate change and disasters by 2030. A “worst case” scenario of climate change and disasters will push an additional 100.7 million into poverty by 2030.
We can curb the destructive power of hazards—in other words, stop them from turning into disasters—through careful and coordinated planning that is designed to reduce people’s exposure and vulnerability to harm.
Greater investments are needed in the collection and use of disaggregated data, both to better understand disproportionate disaster impacts and exposure, and to inform resilience-building plans.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

4. How we work together...
Viet Nam is a One UN pilot country
Through the Programme Coordination Group (PCG 10) on natural
disasters and emergencies, all UN agencies work together to ensure that
the UN in Vietnam has a comprehensive and coherent plan regarding all
disaster-related activities. This group serves as the focal point for the
government, donors, NGOs and other disaster practitioners.
The Disaster Management Working Group of which PCG 10 and the
government of Vietnam are members regroups NGOs working in the
disaster sector to cooperate on joint initiatives and projects.
The Natural Disaster Mitigation partnership allows all donors to work
together and better respond to the needs of the Government of Vietnam
Efficient coordination of disaster initiatives is a
must to ensure cost-effective use of resources
and adequate support to national efforts
