Google Reader is a web-based feed aggregator that allows users to access their favorite websites and blogs in a single location. It organizes subscriptions, notifies users of new content, and enables sharing of articles with others. While initially designed for reading online content, it has expanded uses both inside and outside the classroom for research, collaboration on projects, and staying up-to-date in various fields and interests.

2. WHAT IT IS
• acts as a “favorites” or bookmarking tool where users can easily
access their favorite websites
• checks favorite sites/blogs for new and updated content
• a single space where your favorites can be organized and viewed any
time you can access your Gmail account
• includes an integrated feed search that allows you to access and find
shared articles, people you know, and notes/tags

3. SHARING
• Each item has a sharing icon, which enables users to share
articles, sites and tabs with friends.
• Sharing icon will have the article appear on your public page
as well.
• Add customizable displays of your shared items on your
website or blog.

4. MANAGE SUBSCRIPTIONS
• Organize and sort subscriptions alphabetically, by “unread”, by new updates,
etc.
• Add subscriptions by entering search term or by pasting a feed url into the
search box.
• Add tabs, notes, “likes”, “dislikes”, and star your items
• RSS (Really Simple Syndication)
• Starred item option allows users to email the article, add to del.icio.us, Digg
This! , Facebook, or Stumble It!
• Shared items option allows users to view tabs/comments posted with an
article.

menu at the top.
Is it strictly web based or does one need to download and
install software?
It is strictly web based, there is no software that you need to install.
Is it easy to set up an account and are there different levels?
It is very easy to set up an account, all that is required is an email address and
a password.
All of Google Reader’s features are free; there is no paid account level.

6. IN THE CLASSROOM
• Useful for research purposes. It constantly notifies you about
updates on websites you save.
• Group-projects. The “sharing” feature allows you to recommend
articles and favorite items to friends/colleagues.
• Blogging feature allows instructors and students to exchange
important news amongst each other

7. ACADEMIC USE
• academic community survival: know what others are doing
• especially in the sciences, keep up to date with news and
findings
• when conducting research for a paper, subscribe to useful
websites to gain immediate access to new information

8. OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
• constantly notifies you about updates on your favorite
sites (Example: A friend’s blog page, online reading sites,
video game sites, etc.)
• can be used for blogging or random chat

9. WHAT SURPRISED US
• We initially thought it was a website for reading books
online.
• There is a version of Google Reader formatted for the Wii
web browser.

10. FASTER READING
• list view shows you just the title
• “J” key - move to next item
• “K” key - move to previous item
• “M” key - mark item as read
• tag items by typing “T”
• share items by typing “S”
