3. Genre Characteristics
- Pop - Pop / R&B
- Towards the end of the video dance routines - As we watch the music video, we get to see a
montage of clips and images of Little Mix
during their time on the X Factor. This
narrative story in chronological order tells the
story of how they got to this video in the end.
Both the videos from the same artist but very different. In ‘Wings’ the video is more about the very cheesy, girl band
dance moves when in ‘Cannonball’ it’s more to do with the narrative side. This to promote the band to listeners who
may have not heard of them before, when in ‘Wings’ they have their fan base and want to show what they have.
4. Visuals and Lyrics
- Not literal – the lyrics say ‘spread your wings - Not much of a connection
my little butterfly’ the girls are metaphorically - The song is contrapuntal to the images and
a butterfly and spreading away from their clips that are being shown on the screen. The
mothers (growing up). song is happy and rejoicing what they have
done, when the images are emotional
showing the stress they had to go through.
5. Visuals and Music
- Change of pace in the song and this is also - Steady paced editing throughout, which
done in the editing mimics the pace of the song
- Change of music or beat, the location changes - Change of music/pace, for example, when
- Interesting transitions they are finding out the results of who won
- Sharp cuts to show same artist but from the music is slowly and steady and then when
different angles, makes it more interesting to the music's pace steps up we see them happy
watch as they have won. This makes the viewers on a
rollercoaster of emotions .
- Cutting on the beat
- Lip-syncing
- Lip-syncing
These 2 videos and the visuals and music they are trying to put across are completely different even through they are
from the same artist. The video for ‘Cannonball’ was released just after they had won the X Factor, and so the video is
trying to get a strong fan base for them to start their career on and also to say ‘thank-you’ to the fans that were with
them throughout the competition.
6. Need to sell the artist
- Change in costume - Change in costume (montage and live)
- Showing their individual style - Showing off their talent for singing and
- Looks are very important in this video then winning the competition
the lyrics and the song - New group just come out of the X Factor, so
want to get more publicity through this music
video
- As a group – together and unity
When ‘Cannonball’ was released the need to sell the artist was really important, so the need to show Little Mix as a
unity group together was the key. But once they had released their first single from their album, ‘Wings’, the important
factor then was the way they looked in the video and what others both viewers and artist would say about them.
7. Intertextuality
- It’s similar to Rihanna’s video ‘rude boy’ - Similar pattern of style in the montage as
other X Factor finalists
Both videos have their unique Intertextuality. They have taken key parts of other artists video's to put in there own to
create the same amount of feel that the other video wanted.
8. Voyeurism
- In wings there are a lot of mid shots, and very - Looking at the fame they have achieved
rare to we see them below the waist
