So what’s it all about? For 20 years I have presented a view which runs contrary to traditional top-down-driven
Community and Economic Development – in fact, a view based on re-discovery of a lost natural science for community
regeneration. Simply, it’s about how communities (particularly smaller communities) can economic and socially be
regenerated and even prosper in a rapidly changing world that is obsessed with unsustainable, debt-driven growth
and debt-slavery for many. Just as a “garden” can be regenerated with planting of new seed and pruning back of
older trees to make them more productive - communities are the same. Just like a garden, a community does not
always have to get bigger to be made better. As old “plants” (businesses, services and infrastructure) disappear, these
can be replaced with the natural “seed ideas” of individuals that always exist within the community itself. Knowing
how to identify, test, value, propagate and grow these seed ideas (most of which will be micro-level economic and
social opportunities) is what the Natural Science of Community Regeneration is about – growing inclusive communities
by supporting the ideas of individuals, based on my clear definition of community inclusiveness shown on the next page.

my journey of many years coalface experience in working with
communities (rural, island and city-based.) It’s been a journey
that has been enormously challenging in the face of traditional top-
down thinking. Yet, it has rewarded me with understanding of the
Cycle of Learning. (See page 43.)
This understanding is available to community passionate/supportive
organisations and individuals who want a genuinely sustainable,
affordable community-driven and highly inclusive process for
addressing crucial micro-level social and economic challenges.
