Editor's Notes
Moraines, Chugach Mountains, Alaska
A glacial moraine is a ridge of rock and debris that has been scoured and “bulldozed” by a glacier. Lateral moraines form on the sides of glaciers, medial moraines form when lateral moraines from two or more tributary glaciers merge, and terminal moraines form at the ends of glaciers. This unnamed glacier is just one of many glaciers that are retreating in Alaska's Chugach Mountains. The elevated medial moraine is a sign of retreat.
