General Information (summary):
- On several occasions, I have assisted the local health authorities and hospitals in
Tripoli in investigating nosocomial and food-borne as well as water-borne
outbreaks.
- I have participated in a number of committees and working groups responsible
for setting up guidelines:
o On sterilization and disinfection in hospitals on the local and national
level,
o Health certificates for local and foreign workers in Libya.
- I have been an invited speaker to several scientific meetings in Libya on the
issues of infectious diseases and new emerging pathogens.
- I have served on a number of scientific committees dealing with higher
education, particularly medical education in Libya.
- I have prepared a CD that contains the bacteriology course (nearly 30 lectures)
for third year students in the Faculty of Medicine in Tripoli. More than 2000
copies were distributed for free during 2003-2011. Most of these lectures can be
found on websites (e.g. Slideshare.net and Scribd.com).
- Over the last 20 years, tens of lectures were given to the public on health issues
related to hygiene and infectious diseases. These lectures were given in
hospitals, universities, schools, mosques, and social clubs all over Libya.
- I have written along with a number of my colleagues a number of articles in
Arabic language, related to hygiene and infectious diseases that were published
in Libyan medical magazines and newspapers.
Teaching:
I have been teaching at Tripoli University from 1979 to 2013.
Workshops Organized or Participated in as a Lecturer:
1. Advanced Workshop on Food Safety and Food Microbiology, 4-8 November,
2007, Cairo, Egypt. Cairo MIRCEN, Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University,
Cairo Egypt.
2. A Workshop on Campylobacter in Tripoli-Libya 10-15 August 2008. Libyan

Supervision of Postgraduate Studies and Graduation Projects:
A number of students from different universities in Libya obtained their
MSc under my supervision in the fields of Medical and Food Microbiology. Also,
many students from other universities carried out their graduation projects under
my supervision.
Training Courses in Medical Microbiology:
Several training courses were given under my supervision during the last 20
years. These include practical courses on isolation and identification of different
types of pathogenic organisms from clinical specimens and reporting of data. In
addition, trainees were shown how to do research and publish the findings in
conferences and scientific journals. These courses were attended by laboratory
technicians, clinicians and also by postgraduate students from different parts of
Libya.
Training Courses and Workshops Attended:
1. As a visiting professor, I have spent more than one year ( February 2007-May
2008) in Dr. John Klena Dept. of Molecular Epidemiology, NAMRU3, Cairo Egypt.
During this period we have studied the virulence and phylogeny of Aeromonas spp.,
and uropathogenic E. coli using molecular techniques.
2. I spent nearly 6 weeks (19 September – 29 October, 2005) in the laboratory of
Prof. Cappuccinelli, Dept. of Biomedical Sciences, Sassari University, Sassari, Italy,
working on PCR detection of virulence genes in Escherichia coli isolated from
different sources.
3. More than 20 training courses and workshops attended in the last 25 years
related to medical and food microbiology and infectious diseases.
Published Works:
Please Note:
- I am the corresponding author of more than 90% of my published work.
- I have never received any grants or financial support from Libya or any other
country or organization. I have financed the majority of my work.

  • 2. General Information (summary): - On several occasions, I have assisted the local health authorities and hospitals in Tripoli in investigating nosocomial and food-borne as well as water-borne outbreaks. - I have participated in a number of committees and working groups responsible for setting up guidelines: o On sterilization and disinfection in hospitals on the local and national level, o Health certificates for local and foreign workers in Libya. - I have been an invited speaker to several scientific meetings in Libya on the issues of infectious diseases and new emerging pathogens. - I have served on a number of scientific committees dealing with higher education, particularly medical education in Libya. - I have prepared a CD that contains the bacteriology course (nearly 30 lectures) for third year students in the Faculty of Medicine in Tripoli. More than 2000 copies were distributed for free during 2003-2011. Most of these lectures can be found on websites (e.g. Slideshare.net and Scribd.com). - Over the last 20 years, tens of lectures were given to the public on health issues related to hygiene and infectious diseases. These lectures were given in hospitals, universities, schools, mosques, and social clubs all over Libya. - I have written along with a number of my colleagues a number of articles in Arabic language, related to hygiene and infectious diseases that were published in Libyan medical magazines and newspapers. Teaching: I have been teaching at Tripoli University from 1979 to 2013. Workshops Organized or Participated in as a Lecturer: 1. Advanced Workshop on Food Safety and Food Microbiology, 4-8 November, 2007, Cairo, Egypt. Cairo MIRCEN, Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, Cairo Egypt. 2. A Workshop on Campylobacter in Tripoli-Libya 10-15 August 2008. Libyan National Center for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control. 3. New Emerging Enteric Pathogens: Aeromonas Species and the Medical Community in the Arab World; the Role of Microbiology Laboratories. 4th Conference of the Syrian Clinical Association, Damascus, Syria, October 27-29, 1998. Supervision of Postgraduate Studies and Graduation Projects: A number of students from different universities in Libya obtained their MSc under my supervision in the fields of Medical and Food Microbiology. Also, many students from other universities carried out their graduation projects under my supervision.
  • 3. Training Courses in Medical Microbiology: Several training courses were given under my supervision during the last 20 years. These include practical courses on isolation and identification of different types of pathogenic organisms from clinical specimens and reporting of data. In addition, trainees were shown how to do research and publish the findings in conferences and scientific journals. These courses were attended by laboratory technicians, clinicians and also by postgraduate students from different parts of Libya. Training Courses and Workshops Attended: 1. As a visiting professor, I have spent more than one year ( February 2007-May 2008) in Dr. John Klena Dept. of Molecular Epidemiology, NAMRU3, Cairo Egypt. During this period we have studied the virulence and phylogeny of Aeromonas spp., and uropathogenic E. coli using molecular techniques. 2. I spent nearly 6 weeks (19 September – 29 October, 2005) in the laboratory of Prof. Cappuccinelli, Dept. of Biomedical Sciences, Sassari University, Sassari, Italy, working on PCR detection of virulence genes in Escherichia coli isolated from different sources. 3. More than 20 training courses and workshops attended in the last 25 years related to medical and food microbiology and infectious diseases. Published Works: Please Note: - I am the corresponding author of more than 90% of my published work. - I have never received any grants or financial support from Libya or any other country or organization. I have financed the majority of my work. - Most of my papers are available for free download on several websites (e.g. ResearchGate.net and academia.edu). 1.
