This excellent session by Alexander Bolshev (@dark_k3y) was a very pleasant surprise, and it's a bit frustrating that it is one of the three lost S4x14 videos.
We were concerned that it would be a bit S4x13 / insecure by design / low hanging fruit, but HART has received so little attention that we thought it was worth including in S4x14. HART is widely used in DCS to connect controllers and instruments. The HART Foundation says over 30 million HART devices are deployed.
Alexander covers the protocol in the early slides, but make sure you look at slides 16-21 where he shows how he can change the RTU's Polling Unit ID (who the RTU expects to poll it) to create a man-in-the-middle attack.
There are a number of other HART protocol attacks described, but I was most interested in his HRT Shield board - a high-power low-noise HART modem Arduino shield for sniffing, injecHng, and jamming current loop. He brought over some boards that we are building up to have in our Rack when we go out on an assessment.
I should note, mainly to avoid an email from Jeff, that WirelessHART has integrated security such as source/data authentication and encryption. As we walk through plants and factories we are seeing a number of these WirelessHART devices. They are easy to spot because they can be deployed in the most physically convenient place without worrying about wiring.

Overview
For Best Buy, the public Cloud provides a strategic way to dynamically scale consumer and partner-facing Web and API assets. The Cloud lets Best Buy accommodate peaks in demand without overbuilding, while isolating sensitive data from the public.
Best Buy also needs a consistent way to control what information is shared with applications in the Cloud, while simultaneously insulating development teams from the vagaries of security, management and mediation challenges that arise when implementing a hybrid Cloud solution.
This Webinar, presented by Best Buy, Amazon Web Services and Layer 7 Technologies, looks at a specific example of the Best Buy API Developer Portal and share best practices for security, governance and mediation of enterprise services with applications in the Cloud.
Cyphort Labs presents "Malware's Most Wanted: Ransomware Resurgence: Locky and Other “New Cryptolockers”
Like many viruses, botnets and malware families that we’ve seen over the past decade, hackers continue to find new ways of reinventing old threats. And this is no different for Ransomware.
Ransomware has come a long way from non-encrypting lockscreen FBI scare warnings like Reveton. In 2016 alone, there have been new ransomware families popping up and we expect that to only pick up steam over the summer.
In this edition of MMW, Nick Bilogorskiy, Senior Director of Threat Operations at Cyphort, will discuss:
Locky, the new “it” ransomware and how it works
A deep dive into a new family of ransom locker discovered by Cyphort Labs in March, that uses TOR Hidden Service
Other new ransomware families and why it’s becoming the preferred monetization method for attackers
Ransomware has become one of the most widespread and damaging threats that internet users face. Since the infamous CryptoLocker first appeared in 2013, we’ve seen a new era of file-encrypting ransomware variants delivered through spam messages and Exploit Kits, extorting money from home users and businesses alike.

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural style for creating and using business processes, packaged as services, throughout their lifecycle. This short presentation looks at how SOA fits in the world of IBM System i (AS/400, iSeries, IBM i) and how using the LANSA toolset and set you on the right path.
The cloud is a way to optimize the use of the hardware, sharing it between different systems.
To properly distribute computing time and space of the applications in the available hw resources, they should be organized in pieces, that can be distributed in a transparent way, that are balanced, that use standard way to communicate, that can be monitored. In a word they should follow the SOA approach.
Some typical SOA pattern that greatly improve the cloud effectiveness.

API Design Methodology - Mike Amundsen, Director of API Architecture, API Aca...CA API Management
At some point, we all need to design and implement APIs for the Web. What makes Web APIs different than typical component APIs? How can you leverage the power of the Internet when creating your Web API? What characteristics to many "great" Web APIs share? Is there a consistent process you can use to make sure you design a Web API that best fits your needs both now and in the future?
In this session Mike Amundsen describes a clear methodology for designing Web APIs (based on the book "RESTful Web APIs" by Richardson and Amundsen) that allows you to map key aspects of your business into a usable, scalable, and flexible interface that will reach your goals while creating a compelling API for both server and client developers. Whether you are looking to implement a private, partner, or public API, these principles will help you focus on the right metrics and design goals to create a successful API.
Liberating the API Economy with Scale-Free Networks - Mike Amundsen, Director...CA API Management
Liberating the API Economy with Scale-Free Networks
The Web exhibits a feature found in many complex systems known as "Scale-Free" or "Power-Law" networks, sometimes called the "long tail" Most people think of the "long tail" as an economic and/or social property. However, it also represents physical and informational properties fundamental to the way the Web works. But the steady increase in major service outages indicate that many current Web APIs, services, and even client applications ignore this basic "law of the Web."
This talk explores the "Scale-Free" rule of complex systems and offers clear and simple advice to those planning to build and/or consume APIs for the Web. Such as what to avoid, what to plan for, what to build, and how to identify & steer clear of clients and services that fail to abide by the rules and, in the process, are making it harder for all of us to liberate the API Economy.

The Information Age, 100 years on
The rise of the computer and the digital revolution is responsible for an explosion of devices, data, and connectedness. These are all enabling what is called the dawning of the Information Age. And software designers, developers, and architects all share an important responsibility for shaping and guiding the world’s progress through this axial age into the future.
However, more than 100 years ago, the work of organizing the world’s information into a single all-encompassing taxonomy had already begun. Partially influenced by the positivist doctrine of Auguste Comte, leading thinkers of the early 20th century such as the librarian Paul Otlet in Belgium, museum curator Patrick Geddes in Scotland, and educator Melvil Dewey in the US were each working to design universal classification systems that would encompass and coordinate the explosion of information appearing in libraries, museums, newspapers, magazines, and eventually even radio, movies, and television.
What did we learn in the last century? What have we forgotten? How does their work affect our current trajectory in transforming the work of software and systems design and development? What can we take from Dewey, Otlet, and Geddes with us in to the next 100 years of the Information Age.
Managing Identity by Giving Up Control - Scott Morrison, SVP & Distinguished ...CA API Management
Identity on the Internet is changing. Social networking has kicked off a massive change in how we integrate identity across applications. This is much more than a simple redesign of security tokens and protocols; instead it is a radical redistribution of power and control over entitlements, shifting it away from the centralized control of a cabal of directory engineers and out to the users themselves.
There are compelling reasons for this shift: it enables scaling of identity administration, and it promotes rapid and agile integration of applications. These are goals shared by the enterprise, but this change has significant implications on infrastructure, people and process. Join us to learn how you can bring modern identity management into the enterprise.
Moving beyond conventional single sign-on to seamless cross-device access with APIs

Meanwhile, multitasking has gone into overdrive, as users quickly move from laptop to phone to tablet, expecting a seamless experience when accessing their favorite apps. And this expectation is not just limited to leisure and personal use – it extends to business applications.
Security has broken this seamless workflow and inhibited the mobile “stickiness” businesses are striving to achieve. This webinar with Scott Morrison and Leif Bildoy of CA Technologies will demonstrate how the right combination of identity functionality and secure APIs can help your organization to overcome these challenges and enable the multi-device universe.
You Will Learn
• What challenges must be overcome when supporting multiple mobile app types
• How SSO is evolving past mobile app access to device access
• Why the right implementation of identity and APIs will create consumer stickiness
• How the Internet of Things (IoT) is creating new business opportunities

Editor's Notes
Let's look at the customer challenge – integrating the value chain and then dealing with change. A value chain is the string of companies, assets, people and partners that turn raw materials and labor into end user products and services. These people, companies and assets work together in an integrated value chain, increasingly integrated using SOA and business process management, which improves productivity. Along this value chain, there are typically many points where information handoffs between people and/or applications is manual, slowing the business process down and allowing more errors to be introduced. This drives up costs and hurts customer satisfaction. The enterprise service bus (ESB) within the JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform allows IT to integrate applications, data and people with IT assets to get their job done more efficiently, faster and with fewer errors. By eliminating manual pain points where information is manually moved from one application into another, the JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform connects the value chain and reduces human introduced errors in parts of the business process that can be automated by IT. But what happens when change strikes suddenly... people introduce new products, governments impose new regulation (especially today with the USA “New New Deal”), competitors launch products and counter-moves, companies sign on new suppliers and have to deal with stock outs. The JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform enables IT to reconfigure its assets more quickly and at lower costs since IT does not have to rewrite so many point to point integrations or deal with unecessary, manual information and workflow handoffs.
Red Hat has a comprehensive SOA strategy. 1. Our JBoss middleware is simple to develop to, deploy and manage. We take innovative open source and harden it with extensive QA, documentation, certification of partners, configurations, etc... and deliver it as JBoss Enterprise Middleware subscriptions. JBoss Enterprise Middleware adds significant value to enterprise's IT and business operations by enabing simple, open affordable business process automation with enterprise ready open source software. 2. Our SOA strategy centers on JBoss Enterprise Middleware and in particular, JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform which provides the integration glue to enhance business and IT operations by eliminating manual pain points due to silo-developed applications. We capitalize on Red Hat's virtualization capabilities in Red Hat Enterprise Linux offering an SOA infrastructure that is flexible and can deal with wide-ranging workloads including massive spike demand. We will support MRG Messaging as a high performance SOA transport. Our SOA Platform and other JBoss Enterprise Middleware can be deployed in the “Cloud” to support software as a service and other computing models that require the greater flexibility of Cloud computing. 3. We are extending the SOA Platform to become a full business process automation platform over time. We recently introduced JBoss Enterprise BRMS (business rules management system) to enable speedier responses to changing business and regulatory conditions. The SOA Platform is an event driven architecture designed to handle business events as they come into IT and log these events, helping with regulation compliance such as SOX. The rules engine in SOA Platform is designed to support complex event processing in the future which will be managed by the BRMS. Finally, we see a full BPEL-enabled BPM platform emerging from the open source community over time.
So why Red Hat? Basically, Red Hat is the simple, open and affordable way to modernize your legacy infrastructure eliminating pain points with SOA integration. And JBoss Enterprise Middleware is at the heart of that strategy enabling enterprises to carve out costs. JBoss delivers an easy to consume SOA portfolio that enables you to build, deploy, integrate, orchestrate and present applications and services. The JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform with JBoss Operations Network makes JBoss the easier way to get to an SOA-enabled infrastructure to help run your business better and with fewer errors. Many of your peers, and some of your competitors, are already leveraging JBoss as a deployment platform for their mission critical applications. Why? In addition to enterprise-class stability and performance, they are leveraging our industry leading support throughout the application lifecycle. Red Hat and JBoss also offer unparalleled flexibility and control that you just can't get with a closed-source alternative. And finally, JBoss can help you take back up to 70% or more of your enterprise middleware budget to re-focus on the things that differentiate your business.
Businesses evolve to incorporate SOA techniques into their IT to improve their business process execution. We see six stages of development of SOA from a tops down perspective as illustrated on this slide. Sometimes, SOA techniques will be applied at a project level bottoms up to solve tactical integration problems – IT teams do this by jumping in at stage 4 and 5. However, the strategic business view yields the greatest results. Stage 1 – A business must understand how work is down before they can improve. This entails analyzing the current workflow and participants in a business process to gain understanding of the current state. Business process owners are key drivers. Stage 2 – Once a business understands how work is done, it needs to analyze how IT supports that work / business process. What IT assets are used to execute the business process? How well is the process integrated across process steps and applications? Process owners along with enterprise architects are key players here. Stage 3 – Now that the business understands how our work is done and how IT supports that work, they next look at how SOA can help improve the business process. What process tasks and decisions can be codified as SOA services? State 1 through 3 do not involve new technology yet. Rather they are all about understanding the current state, what are the opportunities and building a roadmap to improving IT's support of the business process. Red Hat Consulting along with partners offer a wide range of SOA assessment services to help with these stages. Stage 4 – Once we've built a roadmap that describes how SOA can help IT improve business execution, the enterprise turns to technical solutions. First, IT needs to decide how it is going to build and host SOA services, be they application or dat services. How are they going to be implemented? JEE, .NET, reuse existing applications and publish web services? This will drive a development and run time environment set of technologies. Red Hat offers JBoss Enterprise Application Platform for application logic services, JBoss Enterprise BRMS for business rules services and JBoss Enterprise Data Services Platform for data services. Stage 5 – Once IT has decided what SOA services technologies will be used, the architects and development team working with operations needs to decide how are they going to integrate these new and existing SOA services and applications such that they can be applied more efficiently to execute the business process. JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform is a next generation ESB that enables this integration and JBoss Enterprise Portal Platform enables personalized interaction with the automated business process improving the productivity of process participants. Stage 6 – Finally, in stage 6, the business and IT look to bring the SOA to life with business process management and workflow technologies such as the JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform's jBPM or BPEL to codify the automated business process. Red Hat Consulting has SOA, BRMS and other implementation services to help with stages 4-6.
