40. “Taking Advantage of Time”
Lisbet Gonzales, Newburgh Free Academy
Puebla,Mexico is a place where time runs as slowly as a turtle. I remember how
spring comes because everything is green: big trees, flowers, and a beautiful
baby blue sky. So, when you look around you can comprehend that nothing in
nature lies.

It is the best part because people can do whatever they want during the day.
They clean their houses, make food and watch television. Sometimes, young
people go to the park after sunset just to do their homework with their friends.
That’s what people usually do.

In my case, after we get out of school, we’d come home and later we’d go to el campo
where my friends and I would find each other to play baseball, or to cut fruit out of
trees. When we come home to our homes all our clothes are green and dirty. And you
can recognize the color of it-- the color earth.

We change ourselves in a big flat space next to my house where at night we are
divided into teams to play any kind of game. My grandmother screams for
me to come home, so I can do my homework and then when I finish it, I go to her
and kiss her while she sleeps.

A, A is for…. Airplane
Not the type that soars across the sky and shortens the distance of the world.
But the type of airplane that clings to the walls in my youngest sons’ bedroom
and flies into his dreams at night.
When our oldest son, now 9 , was a few months from being born,
my wife and I frantically worked to prepare a room in our house for him,
We gutted out an extra bedroom, painted the walls, and up on the ceiling with the
help of our sister-in-law, we painted a blue sky, with white, puffy clouds.
The older sons graduated from that room but now the 2-year-old is there.
One day we hung up the airplanes on the walls and ceiling and it was an
immediate hit.
When we walk into the bedroom to snuggle and sing songs at night his eyes
drift up to the airplanes.
I imagine his dreams now full of adventure as he pilots his craft into far off
worlds, waving to us from high above the clouds in his airplane
A is for airplane…
