Geothermal energy is mainly used for heating buildings in Iceland, Italy, and other volcanically active areas. In Iceland, hot spring water provides over 50% of the country's energy needs and is piped into homes for heating and hot water. Geothermal energy can also be accessed by drilling wells 10 to hundreds of feet underground to tap into heat from below the Earth's surface. This hot water or steam is then used to heat buildings, greenhouses, and more or to generate electricity by turning turbines.
