A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and qualities due to that origin. GI tags are used on handicrafts, food items, drinks, industrial and agricultural products. There are laws and treaties by WIPO and WTO for GI protection. India enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods Act in 1999. As of March 2020, India has registered 361 GI products, with Darjeeling Tea being the first. Karnataka has the highest number of GI products registered in India.
