The Highland officers describe two encounters during the Jacobite uprising of 1745. In the first, Jacobite forces made several attempts to push through the government lines but were met with little resistance from royal troops and ultimately retreated. In the second encounter, the Jacobite right wing attacked first and engaged in hand-to-hand combat after exchanging fire, despite taking heavy fire from government forces positioned near stone walls.

self, imagining the greatest Push would
be there, they came down three several Times
within a Hundred Yards of our Men, Tiring their Pis-
tols and brandishing their Swords but the Royals and
Pulteney’s hardly took their Firelocks from their Shoulders,
so that after those faint Attempts they made off; and the
little Squadrons on our Right were sent to pursue
them. General Hawley had, by the Help of
our Highlanders, beat down two, little
Stone Walls, and came; in upon
the right Flank of
their second
Line.”

go in sword in hand, imagining they
would be flank'd by a regiment of foot
and some horse, which the enemy brought
up at that time from their second line or corps
de reserve. When the right wing were within pistol
shot of the enemy, they received a most terrible fire
not only in front but also in flank, by reason of those
who were posted near the stone walls, notwithstanding of
which they went in sword in hand, after giving their fire cross
to the enemy and were received by them with their
spontoons and byonetts.”
