Establishing a Learning Commons space is an example of libraries using a business model to remain relevant to its clientele – the students. The goal or end result sought for Learning Commons is to become integrated into the academic and cultural life of the Georgia State University undergraduate experience. To achieve this outcome, the Learning Commons department decided to embark on a new journey of collaboration and marketing. La Loria will detail methods used at Georgia State University Library to turn its Learning Commons space into a place. With programming, additional services such as writing support, and marketing, the Learning Commons is slowly becoming an example of library as place. She will describe examples of programming done with the marketing approach used and the outcome of each event; collaboration and partnership opportunities with various campus units such as the Office of New Student Programs and Orientations; and the focus on customer service via improving reference services.

This approach encourages problem-based learning, real world application, college and career connections, blended and flipped classrooms all while supporting the Next Gen Science Standards!

A workshop to approach how to encourage creativity in the context of educational applications based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), which are personalising learning sequences adapted to each student’s competency level, learning style, and rhythm, and can adjust the physical environment to provide greatest comfort for learning. Smart learning spaces use accumulated data from each student as well as “big data” from all users to improve the accuracy of its choices. This can introduce a “digital bubble” that limits, shapes, and defines the space where the learner can grow and explore, produced when AI takes control of the student’s immediate learning zone. To benefit from AI-based personalisation, we need strategies for avoiding risks of isolation and cognitive bias; we need to create a hybrid learning environment that federates teachers, learners, and AI agents.
In this environment, creativity is not just a global competence. It is the core skill, needed in all types of lifelong learning scenarios, to meet the challenges of the SDG’s, including inclusion and equity. As educators we need to help learners to live in a world where intelligent non-human agents are commonplace. This means learning new ways of collaborating with each other and with machines. Faced with so much disruption from environmental, social, and technological challenges, we need to integrate notions of mediation, co-working and negotiation, and foster flexibility of response in a smart pedagogy that encourages creativity along with communication, digital culture, and collaborative problem-solving – a pedagogy that highlights the importance of surprise, inquiring minds, ethics, aesthetics, self-realization, motivation, joy, and other essentially human learning characteristics.

Some universities have student geocaching clubs. Check out Kansas State University, Marshall University, Fort Hays State University There is your gold mine! A simple geocache (or simply “cache”) is a small water-resistant container with a logbook and pen in it. You can buy specially designed caches, but a regular Tupperware container will do. Unlike pirate treasure, caches aren’t buried. If you can find your way to the GPS coordinates, you should be able to find the cache. Note that the caches listed on geocaching.com may come with clues to help you find them. (“Look for the missing brick in the ivy-covered wall.”)

Brown University has 14 tiny or nano caches that take you on a tour of the university’s Providence neighborhood. In effect, students, and others, have created sets of team building events or campus orientation to new students in a social context. Purposively or not, the universities have crowd sourced the work.
They come in all sizes and shapes! BYOP (Bring Your Own Pen) to sign the logbook. And, if you take a token out, the rules say you must drop your own little keepsake into the cache for others to find! They can be easy to find, as in PNG (Park and Grab), or more challenging to locate. And you will be given clues along the way. When you get near the stash, the app will announce that you are close!
