This document discusses the conventions of hip hop/R&B music videos through analyses of Jason Derulo's "Ridin' Solo" and Ne-Yo's "Beautiful Monster". It notes that both videos feature the artists dancing with backup dancers in nightclub settings wearing formal attire. The choreography and dance moves in both videos follow conventions for the genres by being in time with the beat. Ne-Yo is also shown always wearing a black hat, consistent with his image in other R&B music videos.

1. 2514600457200Genre and Convention Research<br />The genre I am studying in this area of the music industry is Hip hop/RnB which in the modern day, a major and popular part of the market.<br />-2286002118995Jason Derulo’s song “Ridin’ Solo” is one of my examples of hip-hop music as its generic conventions are stereotypical with other songs of the genre. The first thing I noticed in the video is the low necked top, jewelry and the black mise-en-scene to show that he is upset about something, and he is playing the piano, singing a song about how love is blind.<br />-3175002946400In this shot, we see Jason Derulo dancing with bright lights behind him, which gives us the impression of nightlife music, so this music is going to be popular. As the song goes on, you can see his choreography is carefully presented as he dances in time to the beat. His choice of costume is formal but also his footwear is casual, showing he’s serious but still laid back.<br />The moves of Jason Derulo are very much the same as pop sensation of Michael Jackson, which also coincides with the hip hop/pop factor in the modern day which many artists seem to mimic from Ne-yo, Beyonce and Madonna. The video very much copies the song and is a narration <br />throughout, therefore it is an amplification.<br />27432000<br />Another artist from the R’n’B genre<br />Is Ne-yo. His video of ‘Beautiful Monster’ is another example of R’n’B music. In this shot it portrays the typical conventions in a R’n’B video as its location is in a club, surrounded by girls, and then the male dancers it also captures a male gaze shot of the girls dancing on the poles as the image shows below.<br />092075<br />320040055245<br />In this shot, we see Ne-yo dancing with his pack of dancers, with the main focus of being on him dancing at the front. He is wearing a suit, the typical black trousers and white shirt with a tie just like Jason Derulo did in his ‘Ridin’ solo’ video. As part of the genre of R’n’B for Ne-yo he is always saw wearing his black hat. All the dance moves are similar to eachother also in a typical R’n’B music video convention. <br />
