1. NE-YO’S – Let Me Love You Music Video Analysis
The music video I have chosen to analyse is Neyo’s Let me love you. This is because NeYo is
a popular and current R&B artist, so the video is perfect and shows many genre
characteristics within the video. I am going to use Andrew Goodwin’s theory (1992) to
analyse the music video and talk about the five aspects he says we should take into
consideration.
The opening shot is of waves in the ocean, this is in the background whilst the title of the
song and the artists name appears. I think they have chose to have calm waves as this
connotes peace and calamity showing signs of a narrative performance. The shot after the
opening shot is a long shot of the artist on a stage and it is zooming in slowly whilst he is
turning around. This shows him as a talented performer that loves what he does. The first
mid-shot we see of the female in the video allows us to see that is the female he is
interested in as she’s alone and looking back attracting the male audience.
Goodwin explains how the record label always include lots of close-up shots of the artist.
We see this in the first 20 seconds of the music video where we can see NeYo singing. We
also see low angle shots of the artist which could represent him as being powerful.
Throughout the music video there are lots of cuts due to the song being very fast paced and
co insides with what is happening in the video as it is quite action packed with lots of things
going on.
The mise-en-scene in the video is very conventional to the R&B genre. The men in quite a lot
of R&B music videos are topless or wearing things like a vest to show off their body which
attracts a female audience. Within the video you can see NeYo topless wearing jeans and
you can see the top of his underwear which is very common in male R&B music videos.
Another genre characteristic for male R&B artists is for them to have multiple tattoos and
for them to be wearing baseball caps or black tinted sunglasses. Another common
convention in R&B videos is that there are normally lots young female adults wearing either
tight or little clothing. Also, the artist is wearing a sliver chain which is expected as lots of
male R&B artists wear jewellery.
